connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Rogers is loaded and the Jays have already said they want to make a splash this offseason. That's all the information baseball insiders need to hear to start figuring out who these splash pieces could be It’s been the MO for at least the last 5 years. Trade targets and FA. No team in mlb is mentioned more. I think at least half the teams in mlb shake the tree with most players. One team somehow gets mentioned more than anyone. It’s not coincidence.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Is it really an isolated incident that the Bluejays got swept up in a runaway rumor though? I feel like it’s not. They need to work a little more under the radar. I don’t understand why they need to publicly link themselves to every FA imaginable. ... leading up to Ohtani's announcement it was Morosi with 2 tweets the morning of and that f***er from Dodger Nation - who doubled down (maybe even tripled - would have to check his tweets) on Ohtani to the Jays
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 All we learned from this saga is that Ohtani is a piece of s***. Boo the hell out him when he comes here, but I'm otherwise done talking about terrible human beings. There are a lot in baseball. This nakes no sense. Its now proven he wasnt/CAA wasnt using anyone to get more out of the dodgers. It confirms Morosi is a f***ing idiot.

Anyone relying on reddit for anything deserves a swift kick between the legs. They're currently discussing extensions for Bichette and Guerrero and they believe Guerrero is worth something like 10/300.

That’s why the discussion hasn’t gone anywhere.
Marew Verified Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 How do the mods know what is legit and what is not? I don’t know, they just seem to know. I didn’t invent the rules, but there are systems in place. Baseball Reddit is very strict about what goes up there. Can't be just going around saying things like Khris Davis is a hall of famer and get away with it.

But the main one r/baseball is pretty difficult to get posts to stick without some credibility

But the main one r/baseball is pretty difficult to get posts to stick without some credibility I don't disagree with that. I enjoy both because it's fast to get Jays stuff immediately on the Jays reddit (as someone who doesn't use social media) so seeing twitter posts and stuff is useful but the user base is god awful.

Don't even consider Toronto in your top 5 because their fan base will throw a big hissy fit and boo you if you don't choose them. You know what fans should actually do? Give him a polite welcome.

If that were true then nobody would ever sign with NY, Boston, Philly, etc. Those cities boo people for no reason
Rimar Verified Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I am more worried about teams that cheat on luxury tax. MLB should say that if you sign a 700m contract 10 years or 180m 6 years, this count as 70 and 30, no matter if have pending payments after end of contract, or remaining payments count even if players retired.
Rimar Verified Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 So if start pay Ohtani 40-50 m annually after end of his contract, Dodgers will have this amount of money added to their cap hit. Same when Yankees will sign Soto and Yamamoto 😉

Agreed. I think this will bring up major arguments during the next CBA. Unfortunately its legal under the current contract, even though its an obvious circumvention of the luxury tax. But I think that will change.

It’s not cheating if it’s a loophole. Ask the guys making $100m and paying a 10% effective tax rate. It’s s***** but it’s not cheating. As for this mlb loophole, it takes two to tango. There’s 75 players someone mentioned with deferred payments, so it’s not super rare. Ohtani is truly just a unicorn situation with his endorsement dollars, where he could defer such an amount.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I think Devers got $75m deferred, which would be more normal. So they probably have to put like $3m a year away that circumvents the cap. And the player has to agree.

That's the most naive thing I have read in a long time, to think people care about that. Players that show tremendous disrespectto the game and for fans get booed and they absolutely deserve it. That's the way sports have always been.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 This is rich even coming from you. How in the world do you come to that conclusion? The guy just deferred nearly his entire salary so that his team could surround him with more talent. It's hard to be much more selfless than that. I mean when you make an additional 50 schmil from endorsements it’s easy to make that decision. He didn’t do it out of the goodness of his heart
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2023 Author Posted December 16, 2023 The 700M number isn’t even real. 68 million in 2043 is worth about 40-something in todays dollars and the Dodgers are getting hit with 46 mil a year luxury tax hit. And he’s not getting any sort of interest escalators either (Bobby Bonilla is). It all seems pretty fair to me. Why Ohtani wants to jump through all these hoops I’m not sure. He probably has some sort of income tax plan for the deferrals is all I can think of.

He didn’t do it out of the goodness of his heart That is true he isn't exactly a saint for deferring this money by any means. I do wonder what sort of salary he would have been paid had he not suggested the deferral scheme in the first place. Perhaps this deferral idea could even out over time if the ultra stacked Dodgers team wins multiple world series championships while he's there, with an end result of greatly increasing the eventual endorsement money he's able to rake in.

It’s a forgone conclusion he’ll get out of state taxes. That’s 12% (so + $84m) for Cali. The question is, is he grandfathered into the 37% Fed rate, or does he pay more if it goes by deferral time. He wouldn’t be the first athlete to decide to live off his endorsements, and $50m year is living large. And there’s definitely a Tom Brady factor to it all. He wants to win. Anyways, this is a unicorn situation and there’s no need to rewrite rules over it

Well we kind of know what he’s agreeing to without the deferrals. He’s basically agreeing to a 10 year 460 mil deal. Which is about what the industry predicted before this all began. The elbow injury played a big factor in limiting the dollar amount IMO.

Everyone has the 700M number burned into their brain so it’s easy to think the Dodgers are avoiding the tax penalties but they need to think of this deal as 460M. Inflation eats away at those deferrals in years 11-20 A LOT.

Most teams understood what he was looking for and moved on.
