It’s been the MO for at least the last 5 years. Trade targets and FA. No team in mlb is mentioned more. I think at least half the teams in mlb shake the tree with most players. One team somehow gets mentioned more than anyone. It’s not coincidence.

I don’t know, they just seem to know. I didn’t invent the rules, but there are systems in place. Baseball Reddit is very strict about what goes up there. Can't be just going around saying things like Khris Davis is a hall of famer and get away with it.

I don't disagree with that. I enjoy both because it's fast to get Jays stuff immediately on the Jays reddit (as someone who doesn't use social media) so seeing twitter posts and stuff is useful but the user base is god awful.

So if start pay Ohtani 40-50 m annually after end of his contract, Dodgers will have this amount of money added to their cap hit. Same when Yankees will sign Soto and Yamamoto 😉

Agreed. I think this will bring up major arguments during the next CBA. Unfortunately its legal under the current contract, even though its an obvious circumvention of the luxury tax. But I think that will change.

It’s not cheating if it’s a loophole. Ask the guys making $100m and paying a 10% effective tax rate. It’s s***** but it’s not cheating.

As for this mlb loophole, it takes two to tango. There’s 75 players someone mentioned with deferred payments, so it’s not super rare. Ohtani is truly just a unicorn situation with his endorsement dollars, where he could defer such an amount.

That's the most naive thing I have read in a long time, to think people care about that. Players that show tremendous disrespectto the game and for fans get booed and they absolutely deserve it. That's the way sports have always been.

It all seems pretty fair to me. Why Ohtani wants to jump through all these hoops I’m not sure. He probably has some sort of income tax plan for the deferrals is all I can think of.

It’s a combination of things that makes all the sense in the world. It’s a forgone conclusion he’ll get out of state taxes. That’s 12% (so + $84m) for Cali. The question is, is he grandfathered into the 37% Fed rate, or does he pay more if it goes by deferral time. He wouldn’t be the first athlete to decide to live off his endorsements, and $50m year is living large. And there’s definitely a Tom Brady factor to it all. He wants to win.

Well we kind of know what he’s agreeing to without the deferrals. He’s basically agreeing to a 10 year 460 mil deal. Which is about what the industry predicted before this all began. The elbow injury played a big factor in limiting the dollar amount IMO.

I agree. Everyone has the 700M number burned into their brain so it’s easy to think the Dodgers are avoiding the tax penalties but they need to think of this deal as 460M. Inflation eats away at those deferrals in years 11-20 A LOT.

What it really boils down to, is the Jays had absolutely no chance. I really don’t understand why they stayed in until the end. Most teams understood what he was looking for and moved on.
