Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I have been inundated with media about the Ohtani situation and had a few days to reflect. I live in the Bay area and they really thought they had a shot. I was hearing all the local media about Ohtani. Richest individual owner in MLB and needing to make a big splash, west coast etc. Being that I am in the U.S I am very exposed to the U.S media. Then I am part of this board and have of course followed the Toronto media and radio talk shows etc as well. From this perspective, I am convinced that Ohtani did not really want to come here. It wasn't about the Dodgers offering more money, he just wanted to play for the Dodgers and stay on the west coast in his Newport Beach house. FYI- Ohtani doesn't live in LA and does not need to move to have play at Chavez Ravine. We don't know if the Giants were right there with us or if even we were third or fourth in $$ offered. Regardless, he is not here, never was going to be and we missed out on Soto. Now we need to get to work on the trade market since the FA market sucks. Face it, we got blue balled and never were going to sleep with the Hottest chick. More like a Hooters waitress flirting with you for a big tip..

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Not sure I understand this sentiment online that the Dodgers can make all this money on the money they were going to pay Ohtani. A large point of the deal is so that they can surround him with better players and pay to make the team better. They aren't just going to keep all that money and invest it into some fund.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 The Jays would make more sense than the Giants, playing indoors and a chance to win. Giants are trash -not sure what's going on with Zaidi - he has them in a good spot financially so I guess that's good
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 No one will take the Giants massive money offers lately
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Wow damn. So yeah basically he was always going to the Dodgers unless another team massively overpaid

A high payroll team with a bunch of 2 win players
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 (edited) From the Giant’s perspective, the reporter has a good point about some of the remaining FAs. https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/12/11/kurtenbach-why-the-sf-giants-need-to-pass-on-bellinger-chapman-in-free-agency/ Edited December 13, 2023 by Carlos Danger

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 Wow damn. So yeah basically he was always going to the Dodgers unless another team massively overpaid If some fake number is what he wanted we should have offered him 15 years 1 billion dollars and just defer the hell out of that contract for the next 50 years. Then make it 15 for 600 million on the luxury tax books or whatever. 10 for 460 was a beatable number.

They were the obvious favourites and wound up with him. It’s not like the Jays could’ve offered 10/500 and the Dodgers would’ve tapped out
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 So we weren’t second. Jays might have the exact same story

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 10 for 460 was a beatable number. We may very well have beaten it. It's entirely possible we were the highest bid by a wide margin. If Ohtani really is making $50m a year in sponsorships, it's possible that may have dropped here by enough to have required us to pay $100M or $200M more than the Dodgers.
Marew Verified Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 I am just glad this whole processed exposed ohtani for being a terrible human. Not going to feel bad when he regresses and doesn’t make the hall of fame and calls Mike trout crying every couple months because he’s so lonely on the dodgers and everyone hates him now. f***ing pathetic ohtani. I hope you see this. You aren’t an ace pitcher

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 The fact that the Jays were even in the mix, possibly the closest finalist, says a lot about how the org is viewed. A lot of teams never had any hope in hell. Toronto apparently was given more consideration than some historical clubs in major markets. It's obviously disappointing to not land him, but it's at least good to know that we can be a true player on any free agent.

It shows commitment from ownership that they are willing to go big on the right player or pitcher, which is a great sign. Rogers viewed Ohtani differently than any other FA available for business and marketing purposes to coincide with their renovations to the Rogers Centre, which is why the Blue Jays were finalists.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 It KIND OF doesn't even sound like there was bidding and a back and forth. There often is not. Everything is based on models so most teams are around the same number. From the tidbits that have been reported it sounds like Ohtani felt everyone out for a few weeks, then told teams the kind of contract he wanted, and the Dodgers eventually offered it formally so he signed with them.

All in on Bregman next year if we don't find a long term 3B solution before then?

Or was the fact that we were in it until the end a reflection of how stupid Atkins is? Everyone else backed out when they realized Shohei's agents were playing them, Jays were the only team dumb enough to get strung along until the end.
