Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I see the opposite. Toronto was his preferred destination, and the Dodgers had to pony up considerably more than the Jay's to get him. Yea, don’t think so…
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Then I'm gonna go cry in the corner if we legitimately don't seriously improve this team I assume they have enough for one 20+ mill guy and then have to spread the rest around. Will be interesting to see who they go after.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Commissioner's office might have to step in and curb this nonsense. Yeah the NHL finally put an end to these types of deals after teams were skirting the salary cap for years with guys that eventually just retired after they were making peanuts. Allowing a big market team to throw the middle finger to the luxury tax would be the ultimate slap in the face to the rest of baseball.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So, that's that. It never really made sense to pick us over the Dodgers. $700 million; insane.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Rogers just got outbid. They made a push but didn’t work out. Long term could be for the best on the field. We”ll never know. On to the blue collar off season.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I see the opposite. Toronto was his preferred destination, and the Dodgers had to pony up considerably more than the Jay's to get him. If Toronto was his preferred choice, they could have made the money work considering the majority of his deal is deferred. It loses a decent amount of value, Jays could have made it up by not deferring as much or at all if they really had to. Honestly I think his agent just put on a masterclass.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Everyone that has the money to buy a Championship tries to, not like the Jays are bottom of the league in spending, it just matters where you put that money, look at Tampa Trying to basically negate salary restrictions with these loophole deferrals is garbage though.

Jays333 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Honestly I think most people knew this was the outcome since like the beginning of last season. Im not that let down because I never got my hopes that far up. It was an extreme long shot.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Can't really be mad at Rogers for not ponying up 700M + whatever amount of luxury tax they'd end up paying. It's going to be hard to win the fans over this offseason though. Bellinger is a landmine, and there's not much else out there. Robert? Yamamoto? Chapman and Gurriel won't really cut it. They would've been better off not even getting involved with Ohtani at all. Shattered dreams hurt way more than subdued expectations. The Management team gets no points from me on not being able to close again...and that's me being positive. Cause if you look at the other option (Rogers offered just as much or more than the Dodgers) then it's either the team or the city that Ohtani rejected. If it's the team, then the management group is completely to blame and deserve being chastised. If it's the city, then where does that leave us? An undesirable city to play in. Can't really do much about that other than come to terms with the face that none of the biggest talents want to sign here. That's a depressing thought.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Don’t fool yourself, he preferred to go to the Dodgers from the start. This is what I always thought and let myself believe otherwise like a f***ing mook.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Jays were essentially used as a foil. Again lol
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Don’t fool yourself, he preferred to go to the Dodgers from the start. It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. You can have yours.

If the team gave up before they tried they would 100% never attract a true cream of the crop free agent to the organization. There is literally no reason to fault them for trying.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 I blame Twisted Logic for all of the shenanigans yesterday which likely scared Ohtani off. The Steve Bartman of Blue Jays fans.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Apparently Betts and Freeman have a ton of deferred money in their contracts too. Kinda ********. Almost expecting another strike/lockout from the rest of the owners next CBA. Owners will want a salary cap, players wont. You know the drill…
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 Can’t really blame the Jays FO, they made the Dodgers put in a massive offer.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So I was able to reach my friend and he’s surprised as well. His impression and understanding was the Ohtani was going to sign in Toronto for 10/600ish but the Dodgers came back last night with the 700m to just get it done. Front office does have some pivot plans but they’re a bit surprised as well.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Can’t really blame the Jays FO, they made the Dodgers put in a massive offer. Yup im surprised we were even a consideration. It was always clear Ohtani wanted to go to the Dodgers. Shatkins and Rogers tried. Can’t be mad. 700 million is stupid money
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 there is only one way this becomes easy to swallow..... jays winning the world series vs the dodgers!

You know the drill… I legit didn't have any idea this was a thing until today. I thought a 10-year 700M contract would be 70M a year for luxury tax purposes for 10 years, regardless of the payout structure/defferals. Absolute ******** if this isn't the case.

You know the drill… Yeah with the way sports works they can just kick the can down the road. 10 years from now and it will likely be a new FO and even new ownership. The deferrals will be someone else’s problem.

I thought a 10-year 700M would be 70M a year for luxury tax purposes for 10 years, regardless of the payout structure. Absolute ******** if this isn't the case. Its is. It counts towards luxury tax. But in reality, Dodgers aren’t paying 250 mil + the tax. They’re paying like 150 mil + the tax.
