Thats a great story. I've seen that kid play. Elite. That Red Deer area program is producing some real talent. There is another catcher in Edmonton that has solid career ahead that is 16 and has been playing against my son since 13U AAA.

My bud from University's son - NS kid who went out and played in Okotoks Dawgs program in AB - for noticed and made Team Canada Junior team and then full ride to Oregon State Beavers got drafted 17th round. Late but still good accomplishment. His 2nd and 3rd years he really battled injuries at OS.

Always great to see more Canadians being drafted. Hope these guys can go all the way and at least get a taste of the majors

Yeah the WCBL is making good strides in the past 10 years or so in the quality of baseball. All the players, aside from the locals, are D1 and D2 college players from the US

Somewhat surprised by the number of undrafted free agent signings, thought we'd be seeing fewer of those with less minor league space available.

D1 Baseball also showing that the Jays have signed Javen Coleman as well but I don't see anything on X that confirms that yet.

That 2nd round pick may have been another example of Atkins putting job over team. Like let me pick a guy that may be able to help next year if I’m on my last leg, over the higher ceiling guy. Hedge the bets a bit. He got lucky TY fell into his lap R1

Kind of what I was thinking. Though TY is fine because he was projected to go much higher anyway.

Sorry, but this is idiotic and makes zero sense.

There is NO draft pick that is going to "save his job". Even if this kid miraculously comes up next year; do you seriously think that a #5 starter or mid-inning relief pitcher (which is the best outcome) is going to be the difference between him keeping his job vs. being fired LOL? What, a ~0.5 fWAR rookie coming up is going to save his job? How? Why?

The 2nd rounder is a kid that they like who will likely sign for under-slot, which ties into them drafting 3 HS pitchers later who are all likely to sign over-slot deals. The 12th rounder (Carson Messina) is a Top 250 ranked prospect and will command a hell of a lot more than $150K. The 3rd rounder (Johnny King) has a slot value of ~$767K for his pick, but it took the Jays $1.5 million to sign a comparable HS pitcher last year (Landen Maroudis). Do the math my guy.

They have employed this same strategy before, by the way. Both Josh Kasevich (2nd round) and Alan Roden (4th round) signed for under-slot in 2022. This was done so that they could go well over-slot with Tucker Toman with their compensatory 2nd round pick.

They took 3 HS pitchers with their first 13 picks - that isn't "drafting to try to save your job" (which again is impossible anyway).

True, but he went there after he was drafted. Back then you didn't have to sign with the team that drafted you for like a year or something. He was holding out on Baltimore as they were lowballing him.

Huh didn’t know that

Nice. Late or not it’s a huge accomplishment for a Canadian kid to get drafted.

Dawgs stadium is awesome. I remember playing there when I played in the WMBL (now WCBL) and it is an awesome facility. I also enjoyed playing in Lethbridge at Spitz Stadium which is an awesome name lol

Same stadium used to be the home of the Black Diamonds, the rookie level affiliate with the Diamondbacks

That is a wicked name. I’d like to get my hands on one of those hats

Where was the Jays affiliate in AB?

Jays draft Sam Shaw prep Canadian last year in the 9th round, and Owen Caissie was a prep pick in the 2nd round, that kid looks legit.

You really took what I said to the extreme there. Built a nice straw man. I meant someone that made the show or was knocking on show would give him another piece to give the illusion the near future looks good. Every bit helps in that regard. He certainly lacks a lot of that now.

MLB Pipeline has us as the 30th best farm system. I was really hoping this regime would have been better at drafting and developing.

Major changes should be coming to both those departments as well...very depressing

Can’t be true because everybody said they weren’t even bottom 10

Makes no sense to me for an 18 year old to sign as an undrafted FA

It does if they don't have the grades or stats to get themselves a partial or full ride scholarship. If he wants to work in the trades if baseball doesn't work out him going and spending a few years in college is a waste.

True, if you’re set on being a welder or an electrician that’s about the only way it makes sense

To be fair, anyone with a pulse that is even remotely talented has been promoted to the big club.

Unranked player in round 4 = punt

Most likely

Confirmed not a punt, but slightly below-slot:

The pitching cupboard is completely empty. Nothing to draw on.

All of the best pitching prospects are hurt. That includes Maroudis, Tiedemann, Macko and Barriera.
