connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 Montgomery has a lower FIP and ERA than Berrios the last 3 years, and is extremely steady. Not an Ace but a worthy SP for the playoffs

Most guys rocking a xFIP of 4.51 and a K/9 < 5 aren't able to sustain an ERA under 3.
deanmike Verified Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 Texas had the 4th best pythag record in the league this season (98 pythag wins). No one should be acting like this imminent Texas championship has anything to do with luck lmfao. If the Jays had won it all this season (13th best pythag record in baseball) the luck and randomness crowd wouldn't be bringing that up at all. Instead they would be saying the right/best team won.

Your comment about Montgomery was in response to a comment 3 pages back about how Texas doesn't have a WS roster? It wasn't in response to Laika, who posted immediately before you, about how the Rangers pitching staff was always their weakness - where he noted that Montgomery has been super lucky? You either think I'm a moron, or this is a great example of your inability to communicate properly, which leads to a lot of people misunderstanding any point you're trying to make.

Where certain teams have a 33% chance of winning and others have 3%. It’s like if you can get in with a 5% chance of winning, that’s all you need to do, as it’s just a crap shoot from there

His quote was quoting BTS. I’m sorry it’s sometimes more complex than 1+2=3 He led off “pitching was always a problem”… they had a couple good SPs going in. They only had to use a #3 once in the first 2 rounds
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 The worst thing about Texas winning the World Series is that I can no longer use this gif to dunk on Rangers fans whenever they bring up Ratface Odor throwing a punch. https://i.imgur.com/ltPnwzu.mp4

No different than most feel that's what has happened for Arizona.

Love Semien and Seager and Bruce Bochy is pretty cool too. Plus, Jeff Bannister who was worse than everyone but Odor and Sam Dyson on those garbage Rangers teams is the bench coach for Arizona so f*** 'em. Go Rangers.

Luvollo, Gurriel (played like s*** for the Jays), Moreno (basically demanded a trade by breaking his hand and hitting like a slapdick batter), Miguel Castro (tried to sewer the Jays in 2015).

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 Ah meant to decline it last night, I think Seems pointless Apparently I’m not the only guy high on Dylan Beavers. Everyone threw a fit when he was in a trade in September, and he was we called worthless

Everyone threw a fit when he was in a trade in September, and he was we called worthless Not in love with him or anything But round 2 is where the draft typically starts to thin out, so the second half of round 2 isn't really a spot where you can just pick a top 100 prospect reliably.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 What a fun and exciting game lastnight. Yeah, and the Diamondbacks can still take positives out of last nights loss... by turning a 10 run blowout into a 4 run loss. Those who believe in the intangibles and the momentum whatever else people believe players can just summon at will sometimes but not all the time will say that the pushback they showed in the 8th and 9th innings means they arent just going to roll over and die and will have a renewed sense of optimism for game 5.

None of us liked the version of the Jays team we got this year but we knew that if a couple bats got hot come playoff time, the solid pitching would make them a tough team to beat. I would never have bet on the Jays to get any further than Minny, but obviously I would have been happy if they got hot and lucked their way through.

I have a soft spot for the Rangers, because that 2011 World Series is really what cemented my love for baseball and they came oh so close. Definitely prefer Texas over Houston, Yanks, Baltimore, Arizona, etc.

What a stud, good leader and intense fire..!!! His absence would hurt the Rangers long term if this was the first round. Though they can still win one more game without him obviously.

Yeah if it was first round, or even WS game 1 it definitely would have hurt them substantially. Definitely helps that they had a 2-1 series lead already. Kinda feels like Texas will finish the job tonight

Kinda feels like Texas will finish the job tonight It would be nice for them to win at home for obvious reasons, but we'll see what kind of fire the DBacks come out with after putting up 6 in the 8th and 9th last night. Could be a healthy motivating factor.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 Texas might feel like tonight is their best shot to clinch it. Eovaldi has the edge on Gallen based on how they have both looked all postseason. Gallen has been brutal and Eovaldi has been a legend. But Kelly - Montgomery is more of a push. And Pfaadt vs..... Jon Gray I suppose? Is also a push. But it would be all hands on deck for game 7 I guess.

No different than most feel that's what has happened for Arizona. When one really thinks about it, any WS winner likely has the element of luck on their side, depending on how one views luck. There's so many different ways to frame that discussion, but at the end of the day, usually the winner gets more breaks than the other teams and things fall into place better. A line drive finds a glove for your defense and a duck snort falls in for the hitters.... Some idiot left fielder misplays a ball and turns a double into a triple at the wrong time, scoring 2 rather than maybe just 1......a terrible hitting catcher gets white hot for 6 games over a world series while 2 future hall of famers hit like dog s***..... Luck? or just the natural result that will happen more often than not due to having a better and deeper roster than the other team?
