Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 is anyone even complaining about rule changes still other than people who began watching in the playoffs? Even the ones I thought I would be a little hesitant on aren't that bad. Pitch clock- awesome and don't even notice it Bigger bases- Don't even notice it but steals are up which is good Universal DH- Pitchers became so atrociously bad at hitting that this had to be done The 2 pickoff attempts rule- At the end of the day what does it matter? Steal the bag or not. Why drag it out? So boring watching pitchers throw half ass tosses to first over and over. 3 batter minimum- This might actually increase strategy, you've really got to plan out your relievers and pinch hitters Ghost Runner- it's stupid but no one needs an 18 inning game
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 So just food for thought. The Rangers won the WS after losing Degrom, they lost Jung their starting 3b a big chunk of the season. When they lost A. Garcia, one of their best hitters and a great defender, they had org depth to put Carter in there and not lose a beat on offense and D. They also lost their starting catcher to injuries and Heim was more than adequate and destroyed the Jays. Their bench guys like Grossman came through. When it came deadline time they had the assets to obtain Max S and Montgomery. Max S went down and either pitched like s*** or got hurt in the WS. Yet, after all that, the Rangers system still looks good and they won the WS. The Blue Jays regardless of other issues were not in a position to lose the equivalent players and obtain two SPs and still have a bright future. Those are some measurable differences.

Idk what you’re talking about, we basically weathered a similar storm. Bo and Belt, our 2 best bats missed significant time near the end of the season. Chapman too. And guys like Clement, Schneider, Horwitz stepped up in a big way. We also lost our starting catcher who was hitting very well. On the starting side, we remained healthy but one of our best guys from last year was basically a useless sack of s*** so might as well have been injured. Rangers barely made the playoffs, and so did we. They got hot when it mattered and we didn’t.

Maybe not unlimited but I’d like to see more than two. If stolen bases start to get outta hand I could see them increasing the number of pick attempts

If stolen bases start to get outta hand I could see them increasing the number of pick attempts I agree, the 2 and done is just dumb imo. Many have actually been picked off in the past with more than 2 thrown and now it just gives any good baserunner the greenlight. It doesn't truly slow down a game either, fans always just booed when the opposing pitcher does it to their best runners.

Right it takes like 3s to complete the entire sequence of pick, tag, throw back to pitcher. Small price to pay to hold runners better.

I'm not sure multiple pick offs adds much value to the game. I'm be curious to know whether it actually decreases the runners lead or not or has a tangible impact on the success rate of the SB attempt. Maybe it does? But I think there's a chance it doesn't. For the past 100 years, fans have told MLB directly what they think about pickoff moves. I'm cool with the 2 disengagements. The more you allow, the more pitchers will use them to manipulate the pitch clock and slow down the game.

Not every single part of the game needs to be curtailed for the attention deficient viewer in today’s world How many players would theoretically draw more than two throws? Only a few per game probably. Obviously those are the players who are most likely to succeed stealing second which amplifies the importance of holding them You have to imagine the success rate of stolen bases goes up massively after two disengagements. If two moves are burned the leads increase and so do the jumps I also don’t think fans care about pickoffs at all. The boos come from home crowds when the away pitcher throws over. Never heard a home crowd disgruntled with their own pitcher holding runners
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 I kind of agree that limiting the throws over is weird Not a big deal, but it's just kind of gimmicky when the pitcher runs out of throws. Leads to weird things like that Bassitt play.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Ya the limit on pickoff attempts is dumb, but if there is going to be a limit, don't make it 2 lol The customers will get ticked off by attempt 4, so make it the limit instead, would be very rare a pitcher uses all 4 anyway

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 The new rules were a non issue I would leave everything as is for another season - the disengagement limits were whatever - didn't really impact too many game outcomes if any at all
Marew Verified Member Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Chris bassitt needs more than 2 pickoff attempts. Until we lose him I’m good with adding unlimited attempts.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Literally nobody would notice if they said four pick off attempts Holding runners is also harder with the time clock, not just the number of picks
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 There'll be no changes, it worked.

Never heard a home crowd disgruntled with their own pitcher holding runners I just don't think it's necessary. I love that we have a couple of players stealing 60 or 70 bases a year, and lots more in the 30-50 range. More pick off attempts 'may' reduce this, which I don't want. I also don't enjoy it when the home team attempts a lazy pickoff. It's mostly just a stall tactic. If we start seeing 10-15 players stealing 70+ bases, then sure, add another disengagement and see if it helps slow down base stealing a bit. I think the return of stolen bases is one of the best things to happen to baseball in the past 20 years.

Chorus of boos if it’s the visitor. Collective groan if it’s the home team. Go get a beer with Grant and talk about walking to school when there was 3ft of snow and keeping the kids off your lawn
