Arizona starting Pfaadt for Game 1 against the Brewers.

Gallen and Kelly both pitched on Friday & Saturday. Sucks to start the series with Pfaadt but if the D'Backs pull out a win in Game 1, gotta like their chances with Gallen and Kelly for the next two games.

If this was even 10 years ago, both would be going on short rest without question. Times sure have changed. It will be interesting to see how many teams do that this postseason.

Yeah gotta be happy the Jays were able to set up their rotation the way they wanted to for this WC series. At least they're throwing their best pitchers in this series.

I think every other teams has their pitching lined up the way they want, except Arizona.

10 years ago, Gallen and Kelly would be starting on short rest no doubt. If Arizona squeezes out a win vs. Burnes tonight, they look good for the rest of the series. If they lose Game 1, there is the possibility they only use one of their two top SPs in this series which would be disappointing.

The competition level is just too high these days to put pitchers out there without their top stuff.

Pretty much. There might be exceptions for true ACE pitchers.

Saying that, Zac Gallen is pretty close to a capital A Ace. Him on short rest might be > Pfaadt / bullpen.

I still find it crazy how Astros went from 3rd WC, and arguably playing their way out of the postseason less than a week ago to division champs and 1st round bye.

Got to love baseball and today is the best day of the season.

It could actually work out for Arizona. It’s like a tournament strategy where you throw your worst against the best in order to gain an advantage in the next two games. Freddy Peralta has been pretty lights out lately though which will make it tough

The mayhem at the end of the season is awesome. Third WC has really added excitement keeping more teams in the hunt

Yeah if they squeeze out a win in Game 1, they definitely have the advantage with Gallen and Kelly going in Game 2 and 3.

Peralta though like you said has been lights out. Important to win Game 1.

Pfaadt DOES have better stuff than Kelly and decent command.

He was a dominant MiLB starter at times.

He could conceivably shut down the Brewers for 5 or 6 innings.

Yeah he's capable of having a great start where he goes 5 or 6 innings and racks up a bunch of K's. Highly touted arm in their system. Just struggled this season at the big league level.

Brewers lineup isn't as terrifying as the Braves or Dodgers.

It's also pretty amazing how close the Jays came to missing the playoffs. They made the playoffs because Luis Castillo had a bad game at the wrong time. I concede that we don't know what would have happened in a Gausman start Sunday, but at the very least it would have been a terrible stress fest if Castillo hadn't messed up the Saturday night game.

Half the board gets their knickers in a knot over the negative posting, but for the most part the negative posting was a reaction to the fact that last week everything was lined up for an imporbable playoff miss, the Houston/Seattle games were going the exact wrong way until Saturday night and Jays weren't getting it done on their end.

What if Seattle had won 2/3 against Houston ? Then I believe Houston misses the playoffs. What if Castillo had performed Saturday night? Jays miss the playoffs. What if Romano had performed against the Yankees? Then Jays clinch Friday night without stress.

The scenario that did happen wasn't the 98.5th percentile bad that had the Jays missing the playoffs, just the 95th percentile bad (given the state of things Monday afternoon) that had them barely making the playoffs as the last seed by 1 game in a stress fest clinching as another team lost.

I like to think that's the beauty of baseball. The odds of every player, playing up to their ability in every big game moment is simply improbable and always means there's a chance. Whether that's Castillo, Romano, or the nonsensical collapse of Texas' defense in 2015 in a single inning which is always overshadowed by the bat flip.

I also think, most of us preferred to lose the final game to get the 3rd WC spot if the stars aligned and it worked in our favour.

Isn't this exactly how probabilities work? They know there's a chance Castillo is s*** on Saturday night, they know there's a chance Romano performed well against the Yankees, etc. When you added all those up - the Jays had a great chance of securing a playoff spot, and that's exactly what happened.

He was good in September (and pretty good the entire 2nd half)

Needs to avoid giving up the longball though.

That's part of it, but a lot of it has to do with lack of preparation for that kind of thing and reluctance to risk injury.

I think Gallen on 3 days is their best option for game 1 (perhaps not overall), but neither side is willing to take the risk at this point.

Did teams "prepare" pitchers to throw on 3 days rest 10 years ago? I don't recall that at all.

Nah, just in elimination games at best to cover what they have left in the tank.

I recall it happening in the regular season from time to time and players knew that it was going to happen in the postseason, so you would think guys like Bumgarner made some kind of preparations and had an alternate workout schedule for short rest starts. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't have intimate knowledge of their training regimes.

Rays lineup is kind of poopy at the bottom. Margot, Walls, Siri, Pinto - PUKE!
