Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Donaldson wouldn't be the worst idea. We could probably sign him for next to nothing and I think he'd be game to come back to Toronto to try and cement himself as a Jays legend. Not a level of excellence level kind of player but more as someone who is thought of like Edwin.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 QO offer to Chapman is a no brainer. Chad Green's options are tempting. I'd decline the 3 year, pray he takes the 1 year and then would strongly consider the 2 year option. He looks dominate lately and the market for setup men is insane so 2 years, 21 mil for him is not bad at all if he's healthy. He can be a multi-inning guy or a late inning guy and he's been one of the best relievers in baseball when healthy. Bringing him back would also allow us to trade a reliever for something. The rest of them can walk although I wouldn't hate the idea of bringing Kiermaier or Ryu back. The rotation will be interesting because if Manoah is healthy we'd have 5 already with Francis, Tiedemen and even Mitch White as depth. Tons of 4-5 pitching type options out there this offseason, Ryu coming back is a possibility but I doubt it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Speaking of #4 or 5 types, I could see the Jays acquiescing a bit and just using Manoah in that role with Francis, Mitch White and Tiedemann as the depth. That probably makes as much sense as signing a turd like Kyle Gibson to a 10 million dollar deal.

I'd be OK with that, but only if they think Barger or Martinez are ready to fill in when he gets injured. If they aren't ready then I think we need a more reliable option.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Barger seems to have been moved to RF and hasn’t played 3B in a while even when pinch hitting for Mason McCoy as an example and Martinez has been moved to 2B. Some of that is them just trying to find ABs for everyone. They have a ton of infielders down there that need to play.

Assuming Hicks walks and they snag an option on Green, and Garcia takes his option... Romano Green Mayza Swanson Garcia Richards Cabrera Francis Pearson Pop Cimber Danner Cooke Juenger White Zulueta Lots of live arms and swing and miss for days.

Pen and rotation set up beautifully for next year Just need an SP5, really. That could be Francis or Teidemann though The off-season will be very focused at signing or trading for a couple of bats

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 He's going to come in at a svelte 298 pounds and pitch his way to a 4.50 ERA in 180 innings.

I'd love it if we could move Garcia's contract and spend the money elsewhere. I think a guy like Pop or Danner could slide in and provide similar value.

I could do without the f***ing awful Manoah commercials on Sportsnet, though. I want to punch my TV, or claw my eyes out, when I see them.

This Spring training had many people wondering about the Kikuchi v White battle for the 5th roster spot. Kikuchi is having an amazing bounce-back year. White has really looked good over his last few starts in AAA, there is a real chance he is fixed and will battle for a SP spot next year. What a treat it would be to have Manoah/Kikuchi/White all looking good enough to deserve a roster spot with Tiedemann coming up as well?

The best part about the White situation is that since he's no longer on the 40 man roster he can still start 2024 in Buffalo without fear of losing him.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 Wouldn't he be Rule 5? Yeah I think so. And since he's out of options he'll need to be on the 25 man. I think you stretch White out coming in to ST and if he looks okay he breaks ST with the big league team as the long man. Shouldn't be a problem to squeeze him in if he's performing. Francis has one more option so he can go to AAA if needed.

Yeah it's possible, especially with an injury. I think Manoah is probably the favorite to be the #5 unless he gets traded. The team will probably give him a mulligan but I don't know if there is going to be some sort of fight over his service time or not. He's either going to have 3 or 4 years of control left and if he can be a backend starter during that time (I think it's reasonable to expect that he can be) that's still pretty valuable. If the relationship is damaged and the team could get a 2 WAR OF with some control for him then maybe he gets dealt. If he does get dealt then we probably need to sign a #5 to a one year deal. As for the depth, Francis seems better than White but Francis has an option and White seems to be experiencing some sort of resurgence. And then we have Tiedemann waiting in the wings. So all told we don't have a ton of depth but I think the SP is in great shape heading in to next year. 4 guys that never get hurt, 3 decent big league ready #5/depth options, and then one of the top pitching prospects in AAA.

I don't know if it's accurate but I read that if he's not put on the 40 man roster White is a minor league free agent this offseason
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I don't think it hurts to go after a No. 4/5 starter for 2024. Don't think Manoah deserves the No. 5 spot after the season he had. Let him prove himself in ST and down in Buffalo first before he's given a spot. Kikuchi was awesome this season, but which type of pitcher do we get next season? As well, in case Gausman regresses a bit, or an injury happens, always good to have SP depth capable of pitching at the big league level. The more pitching the better and will be tougher to add a decent starting pitcher at the deadline anyways.

Would have no problem with a Manoah trade. Guys that big with weight issues very rarely get in better shape. Far more likely he comes into camp next spring with even more fat.

Minor league free agent if not added to the 40 man at the start of the offseason. Well, the good news then for him is that his performance in the latter part of the season likely gets him a major league deal somewhere. He can definitely see a path to the majors with Toronto also given Ryu going away and Manoah’s current situation. Francis is on the 40 man already with options, so he wouldn’t be lost and if White impresses in ST, that’s all the reason the Jays would need to keep Tiedemann in AAA to build up the innings even more before possibly debuting later in the season. He’ll have other suitors for sure though, but I doubt anyone commits to anything beyond the basic 1 year league minimum deal.

This might boil down to whether White thinks he will receive a legitimate opportunity to compete for a major league job next season.

Pretty much, I’m guessing he goes to the highest ranked team (in his estimation) willing to offer a major league deal since they’ll be for the same amount of money.

I'm kind of torn whether I want him to come back to the Jays. On the one hand he might be a good depth piece given the resurgence in AAA. He was suddenly getting whiffs for days. But on the other hand if he succeeds as a Jay we'll never here the end of it from Terminator. I'm sure you can see my dilemma.
