why would you cut Genesis Cabrera? But the others yes with some kind of invite offer.

He had a 5.13 FIP this year, 4.74 xFIP, 4.31 xERA, 4.58 SIERA

terrible K-BB ratio

by every measure other than ERA he was a replacement level arm or worse

Feels like they're going to pay Romano 8M or whatever then lose him to TJS after a few innings

Really no choice though

The team needs higher end RP and he's the bird in hand

Not like they can bank on doing any better for that money in FA

I mean, maybe

I dunno, there was no structural damage to the tendons, they just relieved an impingement, so TJS is probably only as likely as it is for any reliever these days. Maybe they get him at 7 million, maybe 8. Either way his number isn't one that is going to be prohibitive, and he's actually one of the few good relievers they have in house.

Atkins on offensive needs: "Power is low-hanging fruit to add. In today's game, you have to be cognizant of strikeouts when you do do that." Also says contact is "exceptionally important" in the playoffs, so "not as simple as plug in a power bat" unless they're versatile.

Gotta ask is it really that low hanging?

Lol @ Shatkins still being here. I wanted these douches gone after the Berrios fiasco but them still being here after this season is assanine. They'll have to get Soto or 2 of Teo/Walker/Alonso/Bregman for me to feel otherwise.

Hilarious how Rogers gets rid of AA after 2015 and wanted to get rid of Masai after the championship but they got no problem keeping these idiots. Toronto sports is heading and staying in dark times for a while it seems.

He replied to that in context to HR's in the playoffs by their model? He still seems to think a power bat isn't exactly necessary, I want to die. lmao

I just hope that's lip service. He said they want a better RP acquisition of the Chad Green ilk, in the market for basically everything. Not much really said to be honest.

Masai is black and AA is "ethnic white". Pasty caker white boys with glasses stay at Rogers forever. This is that whole institutional racism thing that you hear about, except it only counts when middle class blue collar men are the perceived benefactors.

The only thing that was really said was expect to have similar budget for next year. The rest was fluff.

My mistake: I somehow missed it but Mattingly out as "Offensive coordinator"

So if Guillermo is gone and Mattingly is no longer the offensive coordinator, unless there is a new hire, I guess they are turning the hitting over to Hague and Mense?

I actually like that if so. They had too many cooks in the kitchen before and now they are letting the younger minds run it. Hopefully that's what they do. Or, if they do bring in a new hitting coach hopefully it's someone progressive.

That is an interesting tidbit. This was all the rage back in like 2017-18. You certainly see this philosophy utilized in our FA signings and draft picks over the last 3+ years.

I was thinking about Hague too as hitting coach but I still think it will be somebody from outside. I would totally keep Hague and as for Mense, I don't have any idea of his impact. I always saw Hague talking to somebody about their at-bat. I never saw Martinez. He seemed invisible to me.

He said they'll be looking both internally and externally.

I feel like I disagree with that statement wholeheartedly.

Like sure, sometimes you have teams like the 2015 Royals that BABIP their way to a championship.

But more often than not, the homerun is king in the playoffs. That mentality of “contact being more important” in the playoffs is BS

Of interest:

YEAR WS WINNER K% RANKING

2015 Kansas City 1st

2016 Chicago 15th

2017 Houston 1st

2018 Boston 3rd

2019 Washington 5th

2020 Los Angeles 3rd

2021 Atlanta 22nd

2022 Houston 2nd

2023 Texas 15th

To be fair, he didn't say home runs weren't important or didn't matter. He said "In today's game, you have to be cognizant of strikeouts when you add power." Also says contact is "exceptionally important" in the playoffs, so "not as simple as plug in a power bat" unless they're versatile.

I don't think there's any doubt that home runs play a bit role in the playoffs, but it's often about getting hot at the right time and hitting home runs at the right time. Maybe those big power, 30% K rate guys do give you a better shot of getting hot and going on a tear in the playoffs? Beats me, but I certainly wouldn't call that 'concrete evidence'.

MLB Trade Rumors has their projected arb values out

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/10/projected-arbitration-salaries-for-2025.html

Here are the Jays:

Blue Jays (10)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (5.157): $29.6MM

Erik Swanson (5.059): $3.2MM

Jordan Romano (5.051): $7.75MM

Genesis Cabrera (5.011): $2.5MM

Dillon Tate (4.144): $1.9MM

Daulton Varsho (4.128): $7.7MM

Alejandro Kirk (4.047): $4.1MM

Alek Manoah (3.063): $2.4MM

Zach Pop (2.171): $1MM

Ernie Clement (2.168): $1.7MM

Based on those numbers I'd dump Cabrera, Pop and Tate and keep everyone else.
