hanton Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I feel like when he says that certain problems aren't fixable he is mostly talking about players being bad or old it's code for the organization is broken
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 One day maybe a Sportsnet reporter will break a story about the Jays instead of regurgitating the crumbs from others.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 LMAO where are my flat earthers now??? f***ing idiots. Not even reading comprehension to understand Harry f***ing Potter. You're so insufferable. Arden Zwelling from Rogers Sportsnet goes and interviews Bassitt after to clarify some comments he made on the podcast. Obviously he's going to walk back on some things and say things in a way not to make the organization look bad. He's not going to bad mouth the organization, ownership or his teammates on Rogers Sportsnet lol. Yes it's obvious this group is an aging core. He even acknowledged himself being 36, Gausman being 34 and Berrios having a lot of innings already on his arm. It's not fixable because these guys are under contract, expensive and there are no top young arms in the system that could help/compliment the big league club. Who do we blame for that? As for the Ohtani "pivot" comment, he definitely walked that one back lol. It was obvious in his interview with Chris Rose what he meant. Otherwise he would have said on the podcast something along the lines "we tried to get Ohtani, who was the very best available, but after him there was nobody else available on the free agent market so that made it tough for the front office." Why did he say there was "no pivot" after Ohtani?
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Jays fell off because 3 top players fell off a cliff this year. Bo, Keiermayer and Springer had terrible years. Together with an injured bullpen. Difference between 90 wins and 75.

Isn't there a possibility that when he said "there was no pivot after Ohtani" that he meant there literally was no where to pivot because the FA market was so weak? I mean when asked, he clarified that was what he meant. Why (or how) can you be so certain that what he actually meant was that the FA had no plan in place and failed this team miserably after they couldn't land Ohtani? Edited August 20, 2024 by Brownie19

Conspiracy theory: Ross watched the interview and didn’t like it, brought Bassitt to the principal’s office and told him to smarten up and walk his comments back or he’s getting shipped to Sacramento in the offseason

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Sorry to bring up Donald Trump. But honestly can’t think of anyone else that when the heat starts getting hot, doubles and triples down and doesn’t give a s***. Bassitt did what everyone in every profession does when there’s heat. Very likely discussed the matter with Jays PR before the next comment

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Bassitt figures there was nowhere to pivot to after Ohtani eh? Hmm, interesting thought. Feels like I've heard that somewhere before. He must be some sort of Atkins apologist or something.

Why did he say there was "no pivot" after Ohtani? Psychologically speaking, you heard what Bassitt said initially and made a lot of inferences based on your own criticisms of the team. Basically it was your brain hearing what it wanted to hear because it would have agreed with you. Then, when the source of those comments clarified those comments, and said exactly what he meant and it no longer fit your inferences, you then decided he "walked it back" because....he must have? Can't have it both ways

We probably will never know exactly what he meant. I certainly wouldn't be too firm with some opinion that what he really was saying was that the FO f***ed up and is s*** (which seemed to be what some were doing - likely because it suits their narrative). That just isn't smrt. I also think we need to consider the probability that Bassitt would actually go on record with anything that suggests the FO is s***. I don't think he's that stupid. I guess there's some possibility that he wanted to show everyone how clever he is, so he said it without saying it. Not sure what he gets from that - like a gold star or something? He can joke with his teammates about how smart he is for telling the world how awful Atkins is without getting in trouble? Edited August 20, 2024 by Brownie19

I dunno I doubt the comments were malicious in nature but Arden and BNS were sent to clear the air It’s not hard to imagine when the people signing your checks also own the media that covers you But overall it’s like the Seattle park factor discussion - not much interest to me

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 (edited) All hail our new ACE! I know this is just a joke, but the reality is that top flight pitchers do develop out of thin air from time to time. A tweak in pitch sequencing/tunneling, pitch type/shape, etc. can have drastic results. The Top 30 WAR leaders this year include guys like Cole Ragans, Cristopher Sanchez, Seth Lugo, Nestor Cortes and Joe Ryan. None of these guys were ever highly touted and some of them bounced around between the pen, the rotation (the back of the rotation) and AAA until they found the right mix. Gausman was another example (although he did have the pedigree). It does happen and for f*** sakes do the Jays need something like this to develop right now. Edited August 20, 2024 by Brownie19

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I can't believe we got Francis for Rowdy Tellez lmao Total WAR Richards: 0.6 Francis: 20.5 (0.5 actual + 20 estimated over his remaining years of control as an ace) for Tellez: 0.6 (Brewers total) - likely done as a MLB player after this season This could be one of the greatest trades in BJ history. All hail Atkins for the trade and our incredible coaching staff, lead by Pete Walker in developing Francis into an ace.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 We will see how hitters adjust to Francis' new pitch arsenal but he and Yariel are looking like solid middle of the rotation options right now and both are under control through 2028 (Yariel) and 2029 (Francis). That helps the depth moving forward but it also adds flexibility to our offseason plans. At worst, Francis is probably solid depth and at best he fills the need for a starting pitcher. I'd probably still sign a starting pitcher but maybe instead of having to look at the Burnes' and Snells' we can drop down a tier and focus more on bats.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 As much as I love Bowden Francis, some of you guys need to temper you expectations. He's 28-years-old and has just ONLY put together a string of 3 great starts in row. Lets see what he does over the final 6 or so weeks. Heading into 2025, ideally he should be competing for one of the final rotation spots during ST.

I'd probably still sign a starting pitcher but maybe instead of having to look at the Burnes' and Snells' we can drop down a tier and focus more on bats. I wouldn't call them solid middle of the rotation options just yet, especially after only 3 great starts for Francis and Yariel who has only pitched 6+ innings twice in his 13 starts. Heading into the 2025 season, would hope they're both competing for one spot only in the rotation, and that the Jays brought in another arm to solidify the #1-4 spots. I agree that I think Burnes and Snell might be too expensive and could limit what the Jays spend on elsewhere. Brownie brought this up the other day and made a good point that there are plenty of solid arms available in the second tier who likely could be had on shorter term deals and less money such as Nathan Eovaldi, Luis Severino, Alex Cobb, Nick Pivetta or even bring back Kikuchi.
