Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 wrt IKF, how is Espinal doing? He's just waiting until Baltimore trades for him, adjusts his bat angle and turns him into a 120 wRC+ hitter.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 IKF had a 157 PA stretch in 2023 where he had a 133 wRC+. He finished the season exactly where he usually does. I'd be surprised if he's significantly better than what he normally is by the end of the season. If that leads to a 2 WAR because of defense, then I'm not sure if that's much of a flex, but certainly a useful player. More useful to a good team, though.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 2.2? Lol I don't think so pal You started this by saying that you would take the under on 1.2 for the year: I'll take the over on that, but if you want to squirm your way out of it I wouldn't blame you. Hey Pal you were the one who beamed about the steamer600 2.2 WAR projection in your IFK fanboy stupor. I just thought I'd test your mettle. Not surprised you are backing down again. Very on brand. Sure, I'll do it on 1.2. Lets get some odds from Dick the Greek and I'm all in!

He's confident in IKF but not confident enough that he'll place a bet that IKF will meet his projections. Softie.

Only a five tool player like IKF can inspire this sort of passion and debate amongst the fanbase.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 IKF is a glove. Few teams if any are buying the 104 wRC+ BABIP bat. In '23 he was worth 0.6 WAR and the median cost/WAR was $4.4M this past off season. On a 2/15 he is worth very little. I''ll take the under on 1.2 WAR for the whole season for IKF. IKF is projected for 0.9-1.0 wins for the remainder of the season by Steamer and Zips. The primary reason he was only worth 0.6 WAR last season was because the Yankees inexplicably stuck him in left field where he really struggled. He was a butcher in left field to the tune of -3 DRS/-3 OAA in only 248 innings which had the effect of tanking his overall defensive value. It's entirely possible IKF produces close to league average offensively the rest of the season, but even if he takes a mild step back the rest of the way and is closer to the 90'ish wRC+ projected for the rest of the season that would still leave him with a career season with the bat. He's obviously not going to have much in the way of surplus value to even make it worthwhile to trade him to someone else, but he would likely be a pretty easy guy to move in trade if the team decides they want to attain a lottery ticket type of prospect in return.

I don't even gamble but the Debbie Downers are trying to bully me in to taking a stupid bet again. I'm extremely confident that IKF will beat BigCecil's personal projections of 0 WAR for the remainder of the year lol. He even said he'd bet on it but when I tried to take him up on it he changed the parameters and now his minions jump in to try and bully me even more. As for IKF meeting his Steamer projections, by definition those are his 50th percentile outcomes and I don't see any reason why I should bet one way or the other against that. I definitely don't feel particularly inclined to make my first board bet ever on it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 Vlad at 3B is actually hilarious when thinking about IKF. It's like Atkins is trying to ruin the one good thing he did this offseason. Oh you have an elite defensive 3B? Better stick Vlad there.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 Atkins used to pull robbie rays and semiens now we're left celebrating ikf 1.1 war. Think about how hard it is to maintain what he was doing to keep the roster afloat with just mlb transactions

We got bigger things to argue about than IKF WAR finish. Lets let this go, and so we move on to bigger fish. Off to my 3rd game tonight in a row with my son - turned 16 today, so wish him a win. 1/3 ain't bad....or something like that Meatloaf sang.

Consider it officially dropped and have fun at the game tonight with BigCecil Jr.

Think about how hard it is to maintain what he was doing to keep the roster afloat with just mlb transactions Yeah the lack of internal player development forced him to contantly play the dangerous game that is Free Agency. In what has become a pivotal season for him it appears to have caught up with him.

It's like Atkins is trying to ruin the one good thing he did this offseason. Oh you have an elite defensive 3B? Better stick Vlad there. It's really stupid. They are doing the same thing with Schneider too in that he's a perfectly acceptable 2B with a very good bat. If you move him to LF he looks like a run of the mill corner outfielder. Someone like David Peralta or something.

Oh you have an elite defensive 3B? Better stick Vlad there. They probably know theyre f***ed. Either 1) You make Vlad happy to sign an extension, if he’s not a total butcher, or 2) You increase his trade value, can’t even hurt it if he’s not good. So you’re not going to prioritize playing some shitbag there in a lost season

Laika Community Moderator Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 RE the team being unwatchable piss It's not even just that they lose and don't score. They don't even seem physically capable of doing impressive things. They don't have the tools or the approaches or the preparation. Ryan Mountcastle and Tony Santander are league average players at best and in the last two games they have each hit a homer that was more cool and fun than anything a Blue Jay has done this year. When was the last time a Blue Jay is an absolute bomb that mattered?
