jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 You simply can't deny you've been stanning hard for all 3 guys so it's not exactly easy to tell you are joking there. I have? Geez, I just suggested them as some end of roster fillers and low risk discounted signings, nothing more. You're making it seem like I want Atkins to make Votto, Donaldson and Meadows his primary targets of the offseason lol. You really need to chill and stop twisting words in order to pick arguments so you can sound all superior.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Meadows is really dangerous right now.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 What's up with him, how come your so high on him?
mikepelfrey Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 The priority should be to sign Tiedeman Bichette and Guerrero long term to lock them into the best contracts they can. Dallying with Ohtani so they can be used to make the Dodgers pay more is a fools game

Dallying with Ohtani so they can be used to make the Dodgers pay more is a fools game Because of Othani's marketability it will only cost the Jays 10M a year. on a 60m a year contract... so I heard.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So Bellinger and Solar? Solar does have some power...
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Give me Votto or Belt at dh over Soler power. 1 year commitment
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Realistically I see us getting Teo, Solar and Chapman. Wouldn't be a bad offseason if we pull this off. Still think we need 1 bullpen arm that's better than Romano.

Still think we need 1 bullpen arm that's better than Romano. I just don't see a glaring need to add a high end reliever given the relative strength of the pen at this point. The team has a lot of holes to fill and limited financial bullets to spend so there's likely better ways to spend the necessary cash.

I doubt Steer is even available though. Cinci can just move him to 2b/OF and trade India for the bag of balls he is worth. They wouldn’t likely be looking to trade Steer while he’s still making the minimum and have places for him to play.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 So Bellinger and Solar? Bellinger, Hoskins/Soler/Pederson for DH, trade for a 3B, sign starting depth. That’s the offseason
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 (edited) JD Martinez for DH. Lee for the OF Yamamoto for SP For trade...target Kim from San Diego. He's not a must-move for Preller but they are looking to get younger and cheaper. They were already talking about players leading up to the Soto trade so could pick up there. glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 The Jays couldn't beat the Dodgers in a bidding war, so I don't think they'll beat Cohen either (for Yamamoto). I honestly have no clue what the Jays can do at this point. I want no part of Bellinger or Chapman, but they'll probably end up signing one of them.

Yamamoto or Bellinger. Plus im pretty confident they’ll swing a big trade with Tiedemann going the other way.

We have a CF and 1B. I guess you can move Bellinger to corner OF but it reduces part of the potential CF D value you are paying for. Fools Gold at the AAV and term they will likely command. I think its more likely Chappy is back than Bellinger comes to TOR. For all the FA buzz around Bellinger, Brandon Belt had a higher wRC+ than Belly in 2023 for 1/9.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 I wouldn’t be surprised if we sign two of Soler, Chapman and Lee and I think Manoah and Tiedeman are traded for other holes.

If it's a choice between Bellinger or no top free agent at all I'd still prefer Bellinger, but damn I'm really worried about him turning into a pumpkin in the future given how weak his contact profile looks. I wish that we had readily available bat speed numbers so we could more easily gauge when players are losing bat speed or even intentionally not swinging as hard to make more contact. Bellinger dramatically dropped his strikeout numbers and saw a sizable reduction in exit velocity so I wonder if this was the result of simply not swinging as hard. I would have no issues with bringing back Belt for another season if other options like JD Martinez or Hoskins don't pan out.

Now it will likely be a bunch of meh, unless they can pry some great talent under decent control for a team trying to free up payroll. 2023 has been a BAD year for the Jays.

PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 I think Atkins/ Shapiro need to change strategy on free agents for the remainder of this year. Ohtani has delayed the free agent market, everyone is in catch-up mode, Ohtani money probably has elevated free agents expectations, etc. I think there is no point to get in bidding war with Yankees and Dodgers we will lose every time unless Atkins says outbid until they accept which is not the front office’s play book! I would reach out to Bellinger, Yamamoto, J.D. Martinez and say listen we are interested but our approach is open dialog where we want to know if your interested in joining the Jays and if so what is your price? If we agree we offer a 48 hour window and an additional 24 hour window for final counter offer. At which point we move on to other free agents. Don’t let free agents dictate your timeline, if they do, then they are just playing Jays against other teams. Hard deadline gives Jays maximum opportunity to move on free agents willing to sign versus those that are using the Jays to drive up price! Cause Dodgers have showed free agents they can do this to the Hays so Jays now need to counteract that perception immediately! I think this is best approach for remainder of this free agent season! No point to wait for a Japanese pitcher to wait it out for best offer from Yanks and Dodgers! Jays just a patsy if they allow that going forward. Be positioned, be forceful, direct, and decisive, if it works great, if not move on!

Who knows if this was a case where the Jays couldn't beat the Dodgers offer due to eventual ownership constraints, chose not to do so despite ability to match or beat it as it no longer made sense financially, or weren't given an opportunity to match or beat it as Ohtani wanted to play for the Dodgers all along.

This "strategy" would almost certainly just end up with the prospective free agents telling the Blue Jays to take their offers and shove it up their asses and they would end up with zero of their preferred targets.

This is what I think, they didn't get a chance to match. $700 million was enough for Ohtani to decide to play where he wanted to play to begin with. I think he was fully ready to go Toronto if it came to that, but the Dodgers ponied up and so he went where he really wanted to go.

Well here’s the thing, did Ohtani also allow for the Jays to make an offer with deferred money? Or ..did he wait for the offers, pick one and then decide to tell the Dodgers…I pick you and now we’re going to defer a huge chunk of salary to ensure you can still spend elsewhere and avoid luxury tax.
