glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 They sold Sewald, so you have to think Teo is next. I think they are correctly reading the odds and the ability of their current team and want to take advantage of a sellers market to re-tool. Smart decision IMO. I could see them trading Teoscar but just not sure why they’d trade him to the Jays when that’s the team they have have the best shot of catching for a playoff spot but Jerry loves making trades.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 FWIW (maybe nothing) I do kind of feel like trading for Teoscar would be uniquely energizing for the team. He was pretty popular. Maybe there would be an instant comfort factor and the hitters currently overthinking everything (Vlad, Springer) would relax a bit.

It just a feeling that seems to fit more and more as we watch the team go 2/26 with RISP and score 4 runs over the last 2 games in the middle of a race.

They've been dominated by Kyle f***ing Gibson twice this year.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Its funny how some people think we can catch TB and the O's. but yet teams less games behind us can't catch us and punt us from the last WC. Probabilities and fangraph odds change quickly if a team gets on a run of Ws or Ls. If this was 2015 and 16 we aren't even in a playoff spot right now. We are on a 89 W pace. Work to do on the phones today Ross. Lets go. Bring Teo home. Any team within 6/7 games has a shot to catch teams ahead of them at this point, Sea surprised me when they moved Sewald. 2 days ago, the Angels and M's were 5 games back. 2 days ago we were 3 games back of the Rays, buckle up, lol. Yes to Teo, gladly take him back.

There's always an element of risk when you trade for a player. How will that player react mentally? How will they adapt to a new city, team, coaches, etc? There are lots of players who struggle when first acquired (or in their first year with a new team). With Teo, that risk is almost non-existent. I really want to see Teo back in a Jays uniform by the end of today.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 JV is originally from Virginia. Going to the O’s would be a homecoming of sorts.

Im telling yall, Guillermo Martinez is the cancer that needs to be cut out of the organization. It’s laughable that we don’t have a single hitter with 20 homers. The hitting mentality of “contact first” is awful.

Releasing information before the trade deadline would indicate good news. If it is really bad, they won’t release that information until after the trade deadline. No need to show your hand unnecessarily.

If it was "season" ending they wouldn't say anything until after the TDL. Hopefully its just a minor meniscus injury and announcing takes away some teams leverage in trade talks

They only have X-Ray machines at the Rogers’s Center. Bo needs an MRI and those are 3rd party. They needed to wait until the AM, get the MRI, then the analysis etc..

Kyle Gibson has produced a 2.4 WAR thus far this season. He actually was a nice pickup for them, despite you and others crapping on the Orioles. Gibson has been a win better than Bassitt, and the Orioles don't have to worry about paying Bassitt $40M+ still over the next two seasons.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Definitely would welcome back Tea in a heartbeat. I think he would be great for the clubhouse since everyone loved him and he's used to hitting at the Rogers Centre. He gives the Jays a big RHB with power and who could go on a hot streak for the final two months.

If we get Teo back and Vlad then hits for a 200 wRC+ the rest of the season we may need to sign Teo to a lifetime contract as dugout mascot

Gibson and Basitt are pretty close in fWAR but their lifetime ERA is 1 run apart. Bassitt's k rate is a bit higher. Pretty big difference in ERA for equivalent fWAR. There is like a meme that goes around that show the low IQ guys and the high IQ guys reach the same conclusion but the middle IQ guy (midwit) outsmarts himself and makes the wrong conclusion, however Bassitt vs Gibson might be the opposite. Low IQ - Bassitt ERA better, Bassitt better. Mid IQ - Browses fangraphs, fWAR the same, Bassitt = Gibson High IQ - Goes deeper than fWAR, Bassitt better. So the high IQ guys might look deeper into metrics and know the flaws in fWAR and choose Bassitt... except if Bassit = 60 million and Gibson = 10 million high IQ then should choose Gibson.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Who's suggesting teams can't catch the Jays? Obviously that's a possibility. BigCecil did, and I didn't understand that part of his post, any team can do it within a reasonable 5-7 games back window, these teams have tough decisions today, way above my pay bracket.

Currently there are 21 teams within 5 games of a wildcard spot. Crazy.

Yeah that's the difference. Bassitt is getting over 60 million over 3 years while Gibson only signed for 1 year at 10 million. Jays payroll is going to be tight in 2024 and 2025. Heck when I suggested the team trade for Nolan Arenado, all I was hearing was that the Jays don't have the money or cap space available. That $40M in 2024 and 2025 on Bassitt could have been used much wiser. Again, Bassitt has been decent this season. He's not trash or garbage. Just a huge overpay IMO for a 35-year-old starter. I'm more worried about him in Year 2 and 3. Atkins has made fantastic FA signings though some have been head scratchers. Like Bassitt, Roark, Morales, and the Grichuk extension.
