Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2024 Posted July 24, 2024 Ex Blue Jays' all over the sheet in Seattle getting swept by the Angels... Drury knocked in the winning run scored by Pillar to beat Seattle and Thornton!

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 There's never enough catchers to go around, I'm sure someone will need a hand Joking aside I would take him. He's a lot better than Serven and could be the backup next year.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 Joking aside I would take him. He's a lot better than Serven and could be the backup next year. Serven and McGuire have nearly identical projections for the rest of the season, and Serven doesn't come with the embarrassing baggage.

No they don't. McGuire projects for 1.5 Steamer600 and Serven projects for 0.7. https://www.fangraphs.com/projections?pos=c&stats=bat&type=steamer600u At this point it doesn't really matter unless they have on eye on next season. But I suppose they may not want to lock in the backup C spot this far in advance so why bother. But McGuire is actually a pretty good player against RHP. .260/.310/.378 slashline against RHP with his defense would def play as a backup.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2024 Posted July 29, 2024 I'd give Serven a chance. He's really really bad. Nothing redeeming at all about his stats and the eye test matches as he looks horrendous anytime he plays. He's fine as a 3rd C I guess because he's literally replacement level but anything beyond that is asking too much of him.

Oh my bad in the expected playing time over the rest of the season McGuire could reasonably be expected to provide 0.1 FWAR above what the team would receive from Serven. That's obviously lightyears apart.

That's obviously lightyears apart. All good, I've started using Steamer600 more because the normal projections fluctuate so much depending on the playing time. Regardless, you're probably right to just keep Serven ROS anyway. No sense locking in the 2025 backup C spot this early since they might be able to find someone better than McGuire.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 Chappy doing his thing for SFG. 3.1 WAR so far in '24 for $18M AAV. Similar to '23 Jays season.

Yeah he's put together a nice 3 month stretch after a tough April. He seems like a near lock to opt out of his deal at the end of the season but we shall see how the last few months turn out.

If he's lucky, he might even put together a contract (together with this year) that somewhat approaches what the Jays reportedly offered.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Happy for JT. Unhappy for the fan that took that HR ball in the face though...

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Vintage robbery by Superman Pillar retiring after this season. He put in his ten and didn't take too many days off. Pretty good career considering his low ceiling.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Pillar retiring after this season. He put in his ten and didn't take too many days off. Pretty good career considering his low ceiling. Topped out at 3.7 WAR in 2015 with only a 94 wRC+ Dude was flying in the OF. 10 years in the bigs. Not bad for a 32nd Rounder.

He was always a gamer and a fun player to watch defensively cover CF. Definitely an important part to the 2015 and 2016 teams! Shocked the Angels never traded him to a contender at the deadline. He would have been a very solid 4th outfielder for someone.

I think anytime a sentence starts with "Shocked the Angels (insert idiocy here) ...." it's not overly shocking
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 Biggio's been designated for assignment as expected. Someone will pick him up, Dodgers are just getting healthy.

Pretty good career considering his low ceiling. Is he confirmed retiring? Having one of the better offensive seasons of his career. Should probably keep playing.

Mind boggling...imagine the Rays in those situations?
