Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Castellanos is an interesting comparable. After some very good seasons in 2018-19, he was s*** in 2020, then great in 2021. So 3 great hitting seasons and 1 s***** one and he got paid. Of course there was an argument to forgive his shittiness in the Covid 2020 season. Teo was great from 2020-22, then has s*** the bed this year. So 3 great hitting seasons and 1 shittier one. I don't think Teo will get anywhere near what Castellanos got though. I think there's a real possibility he wants a pillow deal. Like 1 year $10-15M
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Castellanos got f***ing $100M Schwarber $80M Yoshida $90M Good comparables. 2 of those 3 look meh ish so far. Schwarber hits 46 bombs in '22 and tops out at 2.6 WAR for 20M. This year 0.3 and in Vlad range. yoshida's D is pretty bad. I hadn't looked at his D stats before today. 0.8 WAR. Castellanos is a pretty much disaster although he made some nice catches in the playoffs last year lol. 0.3 WAR after a negative '22. These are cautionary tales on term/AAV to hit & no mitt players value.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Whit has had a little bit of a rough week or so at the dish. Let's give him a breather today and give Babe Schneider a start? I don't want to offend Cavan Biggio stans so don't worry, maybe we can put him in for Springer?

Cavan should get into the game today, not only is he hitting well but he probably had the best AB yesterday. Schneider should get in there also, although I can understand going with your everyday players against a division rival and maybe saving the kid for the homestand.

Management has already made up their minds with Schneider, he starts against LHP and is a bench option. That's it.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Weather as of now is saying it will start raining in Baltimore at roughly 9pm EST. Good chance this could be a seven inning type final tonight. Need to get on the sticks early.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 Gausman is 100 percent asking for a trade this off-season if this team misses the playoffs. He's not wasting the remainder of his prime here if they don't get their s*** together.

MAYBE he starts making demands if we miss this year and look bad next year.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 The Jays aren't missing the Playoffs! 64% odds is solid. I have 2021 PTSD. The offense has had so much trouble scoring runs. Last night perfect storm on top of a solid start - bad D, no bats and bad relief pitching (Silver Fox gets a mulligan). Santander hits a pitch 8 inches off the ground out looking Vlad Sr like. Got to win the Series tonight!! Vlad looking like an older Tony Gwynn...from the right side. We need some bombs from that bat.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 older Gwynn > current Vladdy Tony Gwynn's final 252 PA at ages 40 and 41: 116 wRC+, 0.7 WAR Vlad's current 2023 season with 536 PA at age 24: 116 wRC+, 0.5 WAR No lies detected.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Start Belt at 1st and DH Babe Schneider. Vlad is killing this team with his play and shouldn't be in the lineup. He can hang out with Manoah and reconsider his life.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Man this team is frustrating as s***. That said, what I find hilarious is that for YEARS, people were complaining the Jays relied too much on home runs and our offense and pitching/defense were secondary. Fans complained that style of offense and team approach wouldn't work in the playoffs, while others defended it by suggesting run differential is run differential. Now we're 17th in home runs, (9th in wRC+), with great pitching and defense and everyone is losing their minds because the offense is so s***** and hard to watch. I'm at the point where I'm done watching for the year. It's f***ing painful watching losers like Vlad everyday - but the reality is that if we can sneak into the playoffs, we know the pitching and defense has the ability to reek havoc. Either way, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

bluejaysinternNo5 Verified Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 The Vladdy situation is tough because I think at this point there is a solid point to be made in riding your hot bats in Belt and Schneider and having Vlad ride pine with so few games left in the season. On the other hand, you can look at the advanced metrics and think he's going to breakout and carry the team into the playoffs. Personally I don't think he will (I actually think he's going to sink this team lol but I would love to be proven wrong). The easy decision is to let Vladdy keep playing so that's what's going to happen.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 No way this offense is doing s*** in the playoffs, if they make it.
Nursehoneybadger Verified Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I watched every game from the first game of 1994 season and this game and the game 2 weeks ago where we blew a 7-3 9th inning lead and a couple months ago where we blew a 6-0 lead to the rangers and that mariners game 4 Saturdays ago are the most heartbreaking in 30 years of being a fan. I don't know how they did it, but the jays are a terrible team that just wins a lot of games.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 We just got dominated by Jimmy Dean Sausage Creamer and Pile Gibson on back to back nights. Meanwhile Babe Schneider continues to rot on the bench. He’s completely buried, they won’t sit a regular for him and when they do go to the bench, they use Biggio (lmao) or even Espinal (!?) before they use Schneider. Mind boggling.

Masterbather Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 It's fun watching good players on other teams work the count, foul off tough pitches and wait until they get good pitches to hit. Even when they make outs they have great at bats. You always feel like they might make something happen. Then you have f***ing Vlad flailing away at whatever s*** the pitcher throws to the plate without a single f***ing care in the world and when he does get a cookie, routinely missing them. Quite the dichotomy. How is it possible that he got this bad? I don't think I've ever hated a Blue Jays player more. There have certainly been worse players, but that's because they weren't talented. I've never experienced the type of physical anger this man brings out in me. I literally don't want to see him play anymore. I'll take Schneider or anybody else they want to call up. It can't be worse at this point. Why not bench him for three or four straight games? Maybe it will make him mad. Maybe an angry Vladdy might actually be good for us. Because happy-go-lucky don't give a s*** Vladdy who knows he's going to play every day isn't working for anybody.
