Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 I was looking up Cavan's numbers this season, and found this to be a combination of funny and extremely sad. Since May 1: Biggio: 0.5 WAR, 120 wRC+, 153 PA Vlad: -0.3 WAR, 104 wRC+, 380 PA Does Vlad know how bad he sucks? Or does he think he's having a decent year?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Schneider is headed back down soon unless they want to drop Espinal which seems unlikley right now Judging by how sparingly they use him even with Bo on the IL I think you are probably right. But that would be a joke. I get that he isn't the perfect fit position wise, but he's better than Biggio, Espinal, DeJong and Lukes. He's probably on par talent wise with Belt, the Catchers (who the team seems to find ways to DH), KK and Varsho (the team has no problem getting these two regular playing time as well). Hell, he's probably better than Vlad at this point. There has got to be a way to get him into the lineup more consistently and it wouldn't be that hard. But apparently his defense at 3B isn't good enough and Biggio is just too talented to bench (lmao).

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 I just read that Edwin Encarnacion will be in uniform in the dugout from now on. That can only be good for the team, as the man is surely a hitting encyclopedia. Even if he talks to Vlad and nobody else, its worth it
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Does Vlad know how bad he sucks? Or does he think he's having a decent year? I would hope he can at least look at the homers and batting average and realize he’s sucking

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 DeJong is also 4-9 with 2 hr against Wheeler in sss. Probably made their decision easier to start him. But yeah, I'd prefer Schneider over Espinal in pretty much any circumstance. I took DeJong in the HR contest, lets go!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 C'mon man, seriously? Vlad has sucked this year Jay, accept the facts!

The bench at some point is going to be Biggio, Espinal, and DeJong when Bo and KK come back, and that's terrifying. At least Biggio is hitting a bit so he's a useful bench piece depending on the matchup, but having both Espinal/DeJong makes no sense and you know they'll be pinch hitting against LHP late in games. Hopefully common sense prevails and they demote Espinal, but he's technically a vetrin now so probably not.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Does Vlad know how bad he sucks? Or does he think he's having a decent year? Unfortunately, Vladdy thinks winning the HR contest means something.

I get they don't want all the AAA infielders riding pine on the big league club but surely they can find some playing time for the guy who has come up and shown that he can hit. Wouldn't even have to send Espinal down, they could just send Lukes down. But Schneider should be getting some major run right now and when Bo is back he should still be playing close to every day.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Was on a flight last night and missed gm so caught highlights this am. Who isn't glad to have Romano back? Its easy to overlook and nitpick Romano. "Too many sliders, V down, FB command" etc etc, But he is found money, a Canadian kid and great story. A 10th rounder drafted in '14. Almost lost him via Rule 5 in 2018 and now he is kind of taken for granted, although most would agree he is a better leverage back end option than our guy who can touch 103, and is also good. Its a pretty special situation when you think about it. Some props are due to the FO.

Yeah Romano might not be as flashy as some of the other relievers or closers out there like Bautista etc. Though he's solid, reliable and has the mental makeup to pitch in the role. Even some guys with A+ stuff can't handle the closers role. Overall, in the bottom of the 9th if it's a 1-2 run game, I feel confident in him getting the job done. He definitely was a really nice find by Atkins and company, so definitely props to them for finding a closer like him!

That means give or take around 7.5 bWAR over the last three seasons. That's an elite three year reliever run, up there with any stretch from whoever you'd consider the best relievers in the league right now and in the last few years.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Romano can be a bit frustrating to watch at times but his Slider is what got him to where he is. The vast majority of the time he gets the job done. But when he blows up it’s usually spectacularly.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Davis Schneider is grabbing more pine tonight. I guess you can't bench Craig Biggio's son after he had the play of his life last night (HBP with the bases loaded).

Why not bench Vladimir Guerrero Sr's fat son instead?

I guess you can't bench Craig Biggio's son after he had the play of his life last night (HBP with the bases loaded). Cavan Biggio is tied with Brandon Belt for the best wRC+ on the team since May 23rd. He's somehow been hitting even better in August and has the platoon advantage, while also being excellent in the field lately. I'm not opposed to playing Schneider, but certainly not at Biggio's expense. We have to ride the hot hitters until they cool off.

Since May 1st Biggio - 123 wRC+, 0.6 WAR Vlad - 103 wRC+, -0.3 WAR Chapman - 92 wRC+ BARF Biggio has been our 3rd best 'regular' hitter since May 1st behind Bo and Belt. Ahead of 2 hit Whit even.
