G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 This seems like a great hire Can he get us Hunter Brown, Colin Barber or Jacob Melton?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 I see Otto Lopez was hurt today slipping in the batters box, he limped off the field. Lukes had the only extra base hit, and Hutch and Richards had their tits lit.

The world as we know it wouldn’t exist without them. The reference was to keep him weighted down...swing and miss. lol I wear steel toes to work everyday bro.

He is my break out pitcher in that pen this year I’d like to see some more swing and miss if he wants to be a high leverage guy, right now I can see a bulk role at best. Ground ball machine though which is good if can’t get guys to whiff
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2023 Author Posted February 28, 2023 Yeah I'm guessing Richards falls off the plate this year. I hope they don't give him a super long leash. He's a smoke and mirrors guy. If he doesn't have it locked in, he's gonna get pounded.

If he doesn't have it locked in, he's gonna get pounded. I can imagine there will be a few short leashes this year. I'm also wondering about the effect of the new clock and shift rule. Some pitchers could be hit more than others. Haven't figured out who.

If he doesn't have it locked in, he's gonna get pounded. That's just not a correct characterization. His changeup grades out well with above average STUFF and LOCATION metrics. His fastball has a really good STUFF grade despite average velocity. His LOCATION numbers on the fastball, however, are poor. So he's a guy with two good pitches and bad command. He has trouble spotting the fastball, and the changeup is just not a strike pitch typically so the good LOCATION number doesn't mean he can necessarily land it in the zone and not get hurt. His breaking ball is bad and he throws it too much... but that's probably because he has to to steal strikes. So, not a smoke and mirrors guy. Just a league average reliever with fringe command. But if he can harness the FB just a little bit he will be very effective. He did that in 2021 and his FB was great.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Tim Mayza is the guy to be worried about in the pen. He's a one trick pony. Sinker: 117.9 STUFF 100.3 LOCATION Slider: 75.3 STUFF 95.8 LOCATION So... decent fastball with nothing else going on, and only average velo and command. f***ING YIKES.

I remember not too long ago (yr or two) Richards was an extreme fly ball pitcher and had a high propensity for HR. That scared the s*** out of me when he came in late innings (I want to say his first full year with the team).

Yeah he has always been a FB guy But his best year in relief, 2021, had his highest career FB rate Probably something to do with better FB command allowing him to get more pop ups and weak flyballs on the FB up

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Interesting. I wonder if he has tried to reshape it too.

He scares me most times he's out there. At least with the pitch clock he'll have less time to mope around the mound.

I can't see Richards' fastball being average in terms of velocity...but maybe I'm out to lunch on that. His changeup is very good....but again, when I say smoke and mirrors I mean he's not going to blow anyone away and relies on deception...such as a very good changeup. An average to below average fastball and a good changeup to me feels like smoke and mirrors...his success isn't going to be "stuff based" (ie. power stuff).

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Richards also has reverse splits so he's tougher on lefties despite throwing right handed. Lefties have a tough time getting extra bases off of him. For a team short on LHP in the pen that gives him slightly more value to us as well.

This is the guy Schneider just HAD to get into the game over Gausman in the playoffs last year. I hate Mayza and hope they cut him. I can't stand seeing his stupid face on my TV.

Yup never forget he would've given up a literal grand slam if he hadn't thrown a wild pitch shortly before the homer to Santana. One of the worst pitching changes of the 2022 playoffs. Followed closely by Robbie Ray vs Yordan.
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Question: who (that won't make the roster) is out of options and has to be waived? I'm thinking Hatch?
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Question: who (that won't make the roster) is out of options and has to be waived? I'm thinking Hatch? You can see this on Fangraphs, the Roster Resource section
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 You can see this on Fangraphs, the Roster Resource section Most appreciated! I'd never been to the site before. So basically just White and Richards without options. Not too bad. I figured Richards would be released if he didn't make it and White is the only one that may want to be kept.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Question: who (that won't make the roster) is out of options and has to be waived? I'm thinking Hatch? Looks like White and Richards are the only guys with 0 options of any consequence and both can make the team as one of the 8 pen arms.
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 If White is held back a bit, maybe it makes sense to start him on the DL and then get some innings on rehab.
