I said this to a friend but the letdown from not signing Ohtani is just massive, mostly because there is nobody in free agency and the smart thing to do is just not spend all the money.

Worst case scenario is probably the team overpaying some free agents right now because they have anxiety to make a big move.

Totally agree with you but let's be real, Shatkins are fighting for their jobs. If we take any step back while still having a poo poo farm system, this will be their last year here (especially Atkins). As a result of that desperation, I totally expect to see one or two contracts that fans will hate longterm.

I'd give the Chisox Tiedemann, Varsho, ++ to see this lineup in action

I'd tweak the lineup but sign me the hell up for this. The other alternatives are giving bad contracts to free agents or standing pat so I don't see anything close to being better than this.

I love the make believe narrative you like to spout about how the GM of a team that's averaged 90 wins per season the last 3 years and made the playoffs 3/4 years in the toughest division in MLB is somehow "fighting for his job"

lol

Here comes the "0 playoff wins" retort, I'm ready.

Don't even have to do that since u already know. Also our best window to win was before the Bo and Vlad extensions. I promise you that if this takes any step back this upcoming season, Atkins will be gone and maybe even Shapiro depending on how it goes.

But before we keep going there, let's see how the offseason unfolds. Hopefully some solid moves are made to improve this team's offseason dramatically.

In the end we both want the same thing and that's for the Jays to just win and look like an actual playoff threat. Sadly the only year we looked like a real playoff threat was the year we didn't make it lol.

I really don't know how you could think Shapiro is remotely in danger of losing his job. Atkins is in charge of on the field decisions, and if his teams don't start producing some results in the post season he's going to be shown the door.

Only way Shapiro is in danger of losing is his job is if Rogers doesn't make the profits they expected from investing in those huge renovations at the Rogers Centre. Shouldn't be a concern for next season because we know there is always hype at the beginning of the year to see the new improvements and they've probably already sold a fair amount of flex packs/season tickets for 2024, including corporate seats/boxes for the new 100 Level Infield Club. Signing Ohtani would have really helped with this and would have been a slam dunk.

Ticket sales/profits are more of an issue in the long term that coincides with team success. If the Jays regress down to an 80-win team for any reason, and/or don't replace Bichette or Vladdy with some star power, that likely will impact attendance figures. Regardless of all the new ballpark renovations, if the team isn't a contender and disappoints, fans won't be caring about chilling at the Corona Rooftop Patio or down in the Infield Club.

If these fancy new lower bowl club memberships don't sell (which they might not given the on field issues and lack of meaningful changes this offseason), Shapiro will definitely be skating on thin ice.

That's why Rogers really wanted the Jays to go hard after Ohtani this offseason. To make sure they could protect their huge investments they made on the new renovations especially the new Infield Club area. Ohtani would have secured that likely over the next couple of seasons. Imagine the amount of phone calls they would have had the next day of people wanting to purchase season tickets or flex packs after Ohtani officially signed? Imagine how much more corporate seats/memberships they could have sold if the Ohtani signing became official?

I've read those new corporate boxes in the 100 levels are already sold out, for several years.

Interesting. Need to look into that. Got a link to share? When we catered the RC in the later 90’s post World Series wins we went from 180 boxes sold to 7. It was carnage.

Yeah I didn’t think they’d have a problem selling those spots.

You know how many finance bros need somewhere to wine and dine clients?? Those new areas will be the hot thing for the next few years

I've got season seats and can confirm they are sold out. Made you sign up for a minimum of 3 year term at like a 5% price increase per season or if you went 5 year term it was a 2% increase per season. Funny thing is the club lounges underneath aren't even going to be ready until the AllStar Break either.

On friday when there rumours were flying the Jays were going to sign Ohtani they actually increased the ticket prices on ticketmaster a lot. I don't know if it was manually done or software where the algo automatically changes it when a lot of people start buying at once.

Lmao @ the Braves zips projections.

Why? These projections basically just memorize the entire history of baseball and based on what happened to all the other similar players, tells you what will happen to player x.

Take a guys career averages. Add a bit if he's below 27, take away a bit if he's above 27. Add a bit if he is under-performing his minor league average by more than 100 OPS points... add a tiny bit if last year was awesome, take away a tiny bit if last year sucked... boom there is your projection

Do any of the Braves projections not make sense in that system? Like Acuna is projected pretty good.. but it's his career average, with a bit of a bump for good last year, being under 27.

Olson, career average + a bit of a bump for a good 2023.

Not sure what kind of AI or whatever they use these days. But the simplest way to do it is just multi-variate regression, and it would just predict career average, + figure out how to wait the other predictors like last year, and age.

I'm laughing at how good their team is

That's surprising to hear. Everything around this team was trending downwards last season. There was very little excitement to catch a Jays game. Would be hilarious if everything sold out during the couple of days of Ohtani fever lol.

Almost every monday-thurday game you could have got 100 level on the secondary market for like $40 or less if you waited until a few hours before first pitch. Saturday games were pretty popular with most of them selling out IIRC.

I'd expect the same this year especially April and May games during the week.

When I post that I did a quick search and couldn't find it, I read it on here and believe it was a Toronto Star article, first 3 years sold out.

No, they're corporate seating, really has nothing to do with the on field product, regular fans can't afford that s*** man.

Also - attendance was up 14% last year. 3rd highest since 1993. Must more nonsense from him.

Looks like they're turning the Jays into the Leafs with the suits having all the best seats. Next thing you know they will arrive for the 3rd inning and leave before the 7th inning stretch.

Guess we have Ryan Pepiot and Jonny Deluca to deal with in the division for the next 2-3 years until the Rays inevitably trade them.
