Laika Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Perhaps the teams who may sign him want to negotiate directly with him for non monetary reasons
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Bauer will probably end up getting signed partway through the season (unfortunately), but there’s no team that’s going to touch him right now. I’m not sure how strong the collusion is. That’s gotta be awfully tempting to a lot of contenders. League min for him
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 Dodgers probably offered to pay bulk of his salary to trade him with no takers Unless there’s numerous teams waiting to beat down his door, there would be no reason for a team to try and jump the DFA queue and actually trade for him though. I’d be willing to bet that Bauer and his agent know exactly which teams, if any, are even remotely interested and which ones they’ve told they’re interested in playing for. It’s probably a very short list

League min for him Most of the contenders are large market teams that not want the headache of a media scrum every night asking about Bauer nonstop to try and get a “gotcha” headline. Braves and Jays are out because they’re owners are publicly traded corps that won’t even bother to sniff at a controversy like that. Dodgers are out. Neither New York team needs that circus. He’s not a true Cardinal by any stretch. No chance in Seattle. The last thing Houston needs is another reason to be hated. Sam Diego has the Tatis Jr headache already, Phillies don’t seem like they’d want to upset their team chemistry. Maybe Tampa or Cleveland?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 We just went through this with Cody Bellinger, albeit for very different reasons. Thinking because the Dodgers released him, that no one was going to come close to the arb figure because they could have just paid the arb plus a nothing prospect to 100% secure his services. Then the Cubs sign him for a couple million less than the arb figure and Terminator comes in here flexing his muscles as if anyone wanted to pay more than 1/10 for him. Bauer will find his way on a team somewhere.

The Jays can sign Bauer but part of the deal is he has to shill Bell phones and internet. That should offset the public company problem.

I know the NFL is different but like with Deshaun Watson, I mean nobody really cares at this point. Just the occasional do gooder on Twitter I’m sure, but I don’t see anything main stream
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 and Terminator comes in here flexing his muscles With guns this big can you blame me?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Lol I almost forgot that 90 percent of you in some poll picked Bellinger over KK and then tried fighting me IRL for picking KK. Then the worst franchise in sports history picked Bellinger and the Jays got KK. Lmao

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 On one hand, you’d think teams would wait until the story cools but on the other, you risk someone else signing him. It’ll be interesting which way it goes. As for the Angels, not like they can disappoint their fans much more than they have
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Seems LAD handled it pretty poorly. They were in communication with Bauer about pitching for them and had met with him in AZ the day before to reinforce that, then they cut bait. Of course Bauer could be lying, but it would be a pretty bold lie. So unless the Dodgers deny it, it’s probably true That would seem to suggest maybe it’s not a blackball situation.

Gregory Soto isn’t that good but what a strange group of players to acquire by the Tigers. Guys who aren’t that young and whose ceiling is no more than utility/platoon guys or below average regulars. You’d think 3 years of an alright reliever with good stuff could net you more than that, at least one lottery prospect in the DSL or something.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 They very well could’ve told him they wanted him to pitch and then had a change of heart after meeting with him because of his lack of remorse according to the accounts.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Can’t really determine the truth out of either side I guess. Pretty much, Nightengale's a click bait hack, though. And that's an opinion based article. I don't trust that guy since the BS trade that was offered for JD. Hack I tell ya.

Yeah, I doubt they went to AZ for decency. They probably did tell Bauer they wanted him to pitch. That would corroborate the accounts a little. Then they had their pow wow right before the deadline and cut bait after considering everything
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 My gut tells me that there will be a cooling off period and some team will make a back room deal that IF Bauer attends some type of counseling, becomes an advocate for violence against women groups, donates a large % of his salary to similar type groups, issues a public apology and shows remorse. If Bauer basically checks a lot pf PR boxes, then contingent upon all the aforementioned, the team will allow Bauer showcase or roster spot etc, etc and then let him pitch.

It's like the Tigers GM got lazy and wanted to fill out his s***** bench in the easiest way possible. If you squint you can see one of the three guys he got becoming decent if they hit their 75th percentile projections. And I guess Maton bats left which is a nice feature for a fringe infield type like him.

Yeah I agree I think this is why nobody traded for him. The teams want to get him to agree to a bunch of non baseball terms
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Rangers, Rays or (most likely) Japan for Bauer. I used to like him but the guy is a dipshit for slapping around the town bike in the Me Too era, whether she asked for it or not. Sayonara pal. And lol @ anyone suggesting the Jays should sign him. I can't think of another team in the league less likely to sign him than us.
