Im on the negative side of that fence. They had the worst defense in the game last season, a very average offense that doesnt really project to be much better unless a lot of guys have some great bounceback seasons. Haniger might be okay, but doesnt move the needle that much unless he also turns back the clock and stays healthy. Manaea and Stripling dont really replace what Rodon gave them though their staff will probably be fine given the pitcher's park they play in every year.

So yeah, its been a quiet offseason that COULD prove to be adequate to above average, but they've not really done anything to move the needle against the Dodgers and Padres. They're staring at 3rd place again and hoping to sneak into the wildcard. Adding Correa would move it into the nice offseason category.

Teams clearly above them in the NL, Dodgers, Padres, Cardinals, Braves, Mets, Phillies. they're still very much on the outside of the playoffs looking in IMO.

I almost want to make a bet with somebody that Stripling will out perform Bassit the next 2 seasons. It’s very tempting.

Im not sure i'd go that far yet.

I would. That’s a team loaded with talent, their arrow is squarely pointed up. Giants are meh

The Giants' main problem is that their GM is a coward. Most of their moves are good in a vacuum but if you add it all up it's not enough. He's great at squeezing the most out of veterans and older fringe prospect types but he is so scared to pull the trigger on big deals. I can understand his hesitancy when it comes to handing out larger contracts but he's running the team like they are a bottom third market when they should be in the top third.

Letting us have Gausman was a huge mistake on their part and probably the best example.

Now the market has exploded on them and they are either going to have to pay through the nose for some top tier talent or will have to trot out another collection of misfit vets and fringe AAAA players and hope that they can overperform again.

Youre not wrong. They have one of the highest valued franchises in the game, an amazing local fanbase, excellent revenues every single year. They really have no excuse not to be pushing close to a 200 million dollar payroll every year.

As in we take each other’s life or the other serves the other for life?

They should trade Cobb for Jansen and then sign Correa, another mid tier SP and then figure out how to get another OFer in the fold. Probably just sign Conforto? If they did that they would be WC contenders.

Given how awful their ML roster and prospect pool is - I don't think they should be adding big time FA's (and I have no idea why a big name FA would want to go there besides the $$$). I believe they should continue to add those misfit vets and fringe AAAA players...the issue is they need to be trading them for young assets. There biggest mistake was letting Gausman and Rodon hit free agency. They should be selling Cobb right now and should have traded Pederson last year when he was finally good - adding youth and rebuilding properly.

Cobb was excellent last year. He even threw harder going from an avg from 93.2 MPH to 95.3MPH. It is pretty remarkable he has done that at 34.

I doubt the Giants would want Jansen though unless they believe they can compete starting 2023.

I would love Cobb. I would do Jansen for Cobb in a heartbeat.

Well they obviously think they can compete. They just signed three veterans.

He's kind of like a very risk-averse version of Atkins.

I used to think Atkins was overly risk averse, but then he made signings like Kirby Yates and Yusei Kikuchi and that impression went right out the window.

Maybe, but then why would they trade Cobb who would be one of their best pitchers.

I can't see them trading Cobb. Why would they sign Stripling and trade away a better pitcher?

Because their catcher probably sucks worse than their #6 SP situation. They still like Desclafani I think and their best MLB ready prospect is a Tiedemann type arm, in Kyle Harrison.

I dunno.

I agree it's not a likely deal.

Pitchers also love to sign in SFG so they can probably get their pick of SP veterans to be swingmen or MiLB options.

Yeah they've got Descalfani, Junis who may have had a talent change with his new slider and they are the go to spot for mid tier SP so they could easily sign a guy like Wacha.

Their offense needs some work and their defense definitely does so a guy like Jansen could help on both fronts. But yeah, it's not likely to happen even though it makes sense.

BUT- We all need to keep in mind I'm the guy who has been pushing KK over Bellinger all offseason and that ended up happening. I know there are rumors going around that Atkins reads the board for my posts and that's why we've never paywalled my posts. I don't know if it's true or not but it is quite the coincidence that we passed on Bellinger and went for KK instead.

Given the contracts signed in this offseason I'm really surprised that Strip didn't have offers for more years, and with a higher AAV.

He's still a soft tosser that excelled as a swing guy. He did wonders for us, but his margin for error is razor thin given his raw stuff. I think most teams view him the same way given what he signed for

I feel like strip made real strides with his change up. The consistency and willingness to throw it more. It's highly unlikely he replicates the numbers he put up last year. I'm sure his walk rate will climb a bit, but I think he will have good numbers, maybe as good as Bassitt. He essentially took a 1 year deal with insurance in case he sucks. That does us no good. You don't want to go out on the market next year and try and find a quality pitcher willing to take a 2 year deal. Bassit's money comes off the books when Vlad and Bo are free agents. That was the perfect deal, 3 years.

Now if we could hop in the hot tub time maching and go back a year and not sign Kikuchi and have that money to sign strip as our number 5 we'd really be cooking with some peanut oil. I hope strip has a great season and gets paid next year.

That's a great contract for the Giants. Thought Strip could have got more in this market. As a No. 5 starter, would definitely brought him back at 2/$25M.
