Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 My general sense is that the team is going to approach these two with extensions some time in January when the offseason has slowed down a bit. What do you think it would take to lock them up and would you be comfortable doing so?
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Bo will want too much. He'll be confident to a possible fault and think he will be able to enter free agency looking like a superstar stud SS in a few years. Vlad might sign. Seems to genuinely like Toronto.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Will be interesting to see when Bo goes to the market because many teams might not see him as a Shortstop and that will definitely impact his value. Bo will make more than Vladdy because he plays a premium position. Atleast for now.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 My issue with Vlad is what is he actually as a player. Is a 3 win 1B with a great bat or is he that 5+ win guy we saw in 2021. I'd offer Vlad like 10/250 + incentives. Bo you're likely looking at like 10/300 right now.

The contracts these free agent shortstops are currently getting too......
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Author Posted December 8, 2022 Austin Riley seems like a decent comp for both. Steamer projects Bo and Riley to be worth about 4.5 WAR moving forward and Vlad to be worth 5.5 WAR. Riley signed for 10 years, 210 mil and had 3 years of control left. Both Bo and Vlad have 3 years of control left too. Riley is on a similar track to Bo arb wise, both will be making around 4ish million through arb at the time of the extension and both will be 25. Vlad is a little bit different though in that he makes big bucks in arbitration already and is a year younger.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Author Posted December 8, 2022 The contracts these free agent shortstops are currently getting too...... Bo has to be licking his chops after seeing these SS signings. But if the Jays backed the truck up with a Riley-like extension for 200+ he'd def have to consider it.

With Bo being a 2nd generation player, he may have more of a chip on his shoulder though and you know he values himself a lot. I think it comes down to if he wants to stay in Toronto long term.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Author Posted December 8, 2022 Does Ross Atkins even care about signing them to 10 year deals? The odds of him being around 10 years from now are pretty low given the nature of the business and it'd be a couple of feathers in his cap in the short term.
Jays333 Verified Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 It would be smart to trade one of them while their value is high. Dont think there is any scenario we sign them both. Preferrably Bo as he has well below avg defense.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Regardless of what happens (sign both, sign one, sign neither) the Jays CANNOT f*** this up. Can't vastly overpay either with term or $. If they decide that a contract isn't going to happen they must maximize value. Can't let them go to market and only get a compensation pick back.

Can't let this become a Red Sox situation where you let Betts and Bogaerts go and have f***ing Verdugo to show for it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2022 Posted December 8, 2022 Bo and Vlad came up through the system together. They don't seem as close anymore, but I'm sure if they had the chance to sign 10 year deals at the same time, that's a little extra incentive.

ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Would prefer they just trade Bo. Can already tell he's got an ego and thinks he's already a superstar. Can see him being a huge ordeal to try and sign and he'll likely just end up walking the second he gets a chance. Vladdy, lock him up for his entire career.

Yes lets trade the dynamic athlete with an ego. And sign the fat First Basemen for life. That’s how to build a franchise.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I said this before but if you are giving $300/10 you give that money to a much better all-around player by the name of Carlos Correa. You then trade Bo for a package of other needs like your lefty/switch-hitting CF and a couple of shutdown relievers. It's also tough to pay Vlad with his body type and the fact that he is a 1b and basically just a big bat. If they were willing to trade Teo for a reliever and a lotto ticket why would they want to pay Vlad $30m a year for a decade? Teams seem to be willing to pay Shortstops who can play solid defence and also hit a lot. Those contracts make some sense. In fact, I would be fine with an elite gold glove Ozzie Smith type of defender at SS and find the offence elsewhere as the prices are lower.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I wouldn't sign either until next offseason. Bo needs to show he can throw to first and Vlad needs to show he can get the ball in the air. Next off-season would be "panic time" to get them signed. Not worried about this year.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Neither will sign an extension It's entirely possible. In which case they have to get a Kings ransom in return.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 It's entirely possible. In which case they have to get a Kings ransom in return. I also think trading them is continigent on a disaster season for the team. I really think they finish out their arb years with the Jays and then test free agency.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Author Posted December 9, 2022 Vlad seems like the guy to extend to me but he's already making big money now. He's projected to get 15 Mil and it's only going up from there. Barring catastrophic injury he's already going to get somewhere near 55 million or so and will enter Free Agency as a 27 year old. If the market holds he could easily get a 10 year deal then.

Body types would give me pause compared to other players.

Neither seem to be fragile. Don’t see the worry Well maybe Kirk. I forget what he’s had besides a hip.

His last 3 years, he played 42 games his age 30 season and 89 his age 32 season..

I can’t recall much about his degenerative spine issue. s*** can happen though to all body types. I’m not sure obesity was a factor there but idk

Mo Vaughn hung it up when he was 35 and only played 27 games that year. He also missed the entire 2001 season due to injury. So basically he played until 34 yrs old and missed his entire 33 yr old season.
