So happy they traded Teo. His lazy style of play was driving me so crazy, and then seeing him in the dugout trying to be “Uncle Teo” was getting annoying. He could have a 3-0 count with the team needing base runners and he was swinging out of his shoes trying to hit out out but almost always swinging and missing or fouling it off, and then before you know it it’s 3-2 and he’s striking out. I have no numbers to back that up but anecdotally it always seemed to happen at critical points in the game as well.

 

As for the return, I was hoping for another bat but my God we needed big bullpen arms and we just got a set up man and potential step in closer when Romano is hurt or unavailable. Plus a prospect. Plus saved money. OF is not typically a hard position to fill, hell throw Merrifield out there and he’s better than Teo in the field. Given we still have a catcher to trade and free agency, plus please God maybe trading Bichette who’s for sure gonna walk out on this city the moment he’s a FA (I can just sense it radiating off him, he’s a guy that will be booed when he comes to town if we don’t trade him first), there’s plenty of potential here with the flexibility this move affords us.

 

It was clear this team needed a big change, all year long we could see it. This team lacked “it” and Teo was a huge part of that. We need guys who are gonna take this opportunity seriously and care about winning and Teo just never gave me that vibe.

Not only did we get a possibly elite RP with 3 years of control left but we also got the Mariners to throw in a legit prospect. All for a 2.5 WAR OF making 14 mil in his last year.

 

This is the kind of switcheroo trade fans always come up with in their offseason plans where they trade away an expensive guy to fill a hole and then use the saved money to sign a FA to replace the guy they traded. These moves almost never happen IRL bc most GMs aren’t stupid enough to just not sign the FA on their own accord without moving assets in the trade.

We didn't trade Teoscar for Swanson and Macko

We traded 1 year of Teoscar for 3 years of Swanson plus potentially 6 years of Macko.

 

With only one year of control left on Teoscar, and declining numbers (increased K rate), Teoscar doesn't have a lot of value left.

Waiting until the all-star break will significantly diminish his value, particularly if he has a slow start.

 

Atkins is trying to build a sustainable team. You do that by trading guys with one year of control (and some value) away for prospects and players with more years of control left.

 

However, with both him and probably Tapia gone, we do need to bring in a quality outfielder in a big way.

Jays don’t have a good history pursuing Corner OF. We’ll see what it looks like after the dust settles. If they don’t get an equal bat, it’s not good for a playoff team

Teo is going to put up like 1.5 fWAR in 550 PA, not get offered a QO, sign in Miami for like 3/40, and fade into oblivion with Avisail Garcia.

 

Alternatively, I could see him going the Catellanos route. Big FA/walk year, signs a huge contract that the team immediately regrets

For a cost controlled option, a little off the radar but I like Jake McCarthy from Arizona. He's a bit blocked there by Carroll but has shown he can hit from the left side. Tremendous value on the basepaths. Not sure what to make of the defense as it appears he faired very well in CF but poorly in the corners in a larger sample. Controlled all the way through 2029.

 

He looks like he'd be an ideal/elite 4th OFer on a contending team.

Yeah its friggin complicated now, the pick might be anywahere from 1st comp round to the 4th, there could be interntional spending reductions... all depends on the team that signs him, how much the signing is for, whether the team receives revenue sharing or not, or if they spent more than the luxury tax... lots of variables now

A few years ago he was BAD in CF and thought of as more of a corner guy IIRC
