That stuff about the farm system makes sense. Toronto is not deep enough to comfortably make many of these trades.

Like, the Yankees had nearly a dozen prospects in or around A+ that have decent potential so other teams want them but they are far enough away that the Yankees are not scared of trading them. Toronto has very very few of those types.

When I was trying to find a comparable prospect to Hayden Wesneski, the closest I got was Jordan Groshans. By which I mean, for the Jays to get Effross hypothetically I think the Cubs would have asked for Tiedemann or Zulu or Groshans and maybe Groshans is the only one Toronto would even think of trading there. But Sem Robberse is clearly worse than Wesneski.

Nobody wants to lose Tiedemann or Zulueta. But Toronto has very few prospects who are kind of like them but just a bit shittier. Like, Sem Robberse and Dahian Santos are not even close, for obvious reasons.

Toronto's pitching pipeline is pretty reliant on Zulu + Tiedemann + Frasso all coming through. They kind of need to maintain them all in org for long term talent and budgetary reasons. Can't keep buying pitching.

With the fact that they’re so risk adverse, cheap in terms of spending historically speaking with Rogers and what everyone will make next year and the fact that now teams don’t even like their prospect system - If we see anything today, it’ll be lame duck moves like Drew Smyly and Michael Fulmer. Prepare to be angry/disappointed

Posts like this are very head-in-the-sand. Toronto has consistently brought in high level talent over the last two years, both at the deadline and in the offseasons.

Ross Atkins currently in line at the Apple Store getting his computer fixed so he can return emails. Back in my day we had a GM named Pat Gillick who traded for a guy named Rickey Henderson and that was before the internet or emails were even a thing.

Someone go get Ross from the Apple Store and hand him a phone, a Rolodex and a pot of coffee please

Back in the day his nickname was also STAND Pat for his lack of moves.

8:09am: The Phillies are believed to have Syndergaard “at the top of their list” as they seek rotation upgrades, tweets Jayson Stark of The Athletic.

It suddenly feels like it's Syndergaard or nothing as far as SP acquisitions go

And I wouldn't write Pearson off as a prospect yet, he could turn out to be better than all of our minor league players.

How about a lefty from San Fran?

Or Eovaldi or Skubal?

Skubal not being traded.

Giants/Red Sox apparently are still going to try and make playoffs so might not budge on their pitching

The moves by the Redsox yesterday were very puzzling.

Sure he still exists.

Should just be a reliever at this point though.

Explain trading for Rickey Henderson as a rental then. Or trading Jeff Kent for David Cone as a rental. Was that standing pat?

Bloom is weird. He's trying to Rays the Sox, and its just weird.

Apparently, some predictions involve us getting Happ and Mychal from Cubs

Gillick's philosphy was you don't trade for rentals until you are 1 or 2 players away from making a playoff run... When the Blue Jays built their core via the minors and used capital from their minors, to obtain, Alomar and Carter etc, it was during the building phase he was called "Stand-Pat". Once he was within shooting distance, he traded a potential future HOF for a rental pitcher and similar moves in 93.. The result was two WS and as a fan and Jays fan at the time, it was fnnnnn worth it!!

Pablo López's name keeps being mentioned around. He'd be an interesting target. Still has 2.5 years of control, and would be an excellent #4 starter. He would gives us protection if one of our big 3 were to get injured before the playoffs.

I would say Lopez would be a #3 on our Team if he is pitching up to par. Regardless, YES!! The Fish have all kinds of pitchers I would love!!

Wild prediction - Moreno to Miami for pitching.

Make a trade.

Lopez alone seems light for the arguable #1 prospect in baseball.

Lopez+?

Yeah and Sportsnet will have a field day with him coming back.

Hazel Mae will be so excited to do a one-on-one interview him talking about the big trade in 2013.

Hopefully the Rogers network doesn't have an outage again haha.

I would have to assume Tanner Scott would be included (although his control is awful) - maybe Anthony Bass too? Blah... Lopez scares me - not sure he's the guy I want for the #1 prospect in baseball. Interesting to see Braxton Garrett having a lot of success. Former 7th overall pick who didn't exactly tear up the minors and isn't a hard thrower.

Huascar Brazoban would be an interesting throw in reliever.

Jon Morosi

@jonmorosi

#BlueJays have interest in Ian Happ, whose ability to play center field is valuable in light of George Springer's recent injury.
