L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 The more I think about Duvall, the more I like it. Plus D, probably would mash in the AL East, playoff experience. Me too. 129 wRC+ against lefties last year (.233/.282./.562), can also play CF, cheap

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 I think everyone is thinking much higher up than the front office. If the Jays have bad OF injuries and need a Lefty killer who can also play D they will deal with that via trade at the time. Forth OF now needs to be cheap. Play LF (don't care how well) and hit okay against LHP. I would bet that they are looking more at a Daza type (cheap on the payroll and cheap to aquire) who can be a pinch runner despite his s***** bat. He did manage to hit lefties better last year and most of his horrible fielding came from his time in CF. He also can hit fastballs better than most Jays against LHP. Not enough to make an opposing manager think, but at least he'll make contact. Honestly haven't done a deep dive just think this is the type of player they will look at if any. I wonder if they might even look internally at someone like Otto Lopez who hit LHP really well in the minors. This front office likes to use options when available so maybe they'll start him in AAA because of that, but if they are right up against the CBT threshold, then going over it for a 4th OF seems kind of pointless. Might as well wait until the trade deadline to go over it by adding someone with more impact, depending on who is available. The Jays are going to have to start trusting their own player development anyway. The CBT stuff isn't going to go away as Vlad/Bo get more expensive, and the team having to replace Chapman (or re-sign him) next year. Guys like Lopez, Barger, Horowitz, etc, should be getting some opportunity if injuries arise.

Pardon my resistance to adding another fast OFer from the Rockies who can't hit...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 time to lock up this thread?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2023 Author Posted January 4, 2023 time to lock up this thread? It would be better if we merged the premature 2023 thread into this one until the season starts. That's the way it's always been done.

I would be totally fine with Otto Lopez.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 I would be totally fine with Otto Lopez. Otto certainly looks like he has a chance to nap one of our open bench spots. He's not a real prospect like Barger is, so time for him to develop into a good bench/util guy.

That's the way it's always been done. No it wasn't. It's been created at the beginning of the year more often than not. In fact 2022 was the only one that wasn't create until spring training. https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/9553-General-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread-(2021)?highlight=General+Blue+Jays+Discussion+Thread https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/9299-General-2020-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread?highlight=General+Blue+Jays+Discussion+Thread https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/8877-General-2019-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread?highlight=General+Blue+Jays+Discussion+Thread https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/8092-General-2018-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread?highlight=General+Blue+Jays+Discussion+Thread https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/7127-General-2017-Blue-Jays-Discussion-Thread?highlight=General+Blue+Jays+Discussion+Thread So in summary; please lock Grant's General Blue Jays Discussion Thread (2022).
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 What year is it now? General Blue Jays Discussion (2023) Lock this one up IMO, it's not 2022 anymore.

Nice research. I like a fresh thread to start the season, rather than having it filled with offseason discussion, but to each their own.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2023 Author Posted January 5, 2023 Do we think the Devers contract is a good comparable for a Guerrero Jr. contract extension? Devers is a little more established and older, but the skillsets are reasonably similar.

Devers is a little more established and older, but the skillsets are reasonably similar. I think that's fair - however, if Vlad meets his projections and posts another 160 wRC+, 5.5+ WAR year, he probably pushes into a level/class above Devers....maybe it goes up to $385M over 11 years or something.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 Yeah, I think so. The pros and cons kind of cancel out. Devers better defensive value, Vlad better projected bat. Similar total package upside between them. Both kind of fall in the same bucket as "good hitting young fatties", Devers probably not being thought of as a 3B in his 30s at all. Devers was set the reach FA before what would be his age 27 season. Vlad on track for the same FA timeline. They bought 10 of his FA years. Vlad being 3 years away from FA means it should cost a bit less to do a similar thing for him. More risk in buying out 10 FA years when those don't even begin for 3 seasons.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 Somewhat, but I'd expect to get Vlad cheaper. Vladdy has more team control, but he seems to be on the same path. We'll see if he bounces back next year, Devers had a down year after his breakout as well, but hasn't fully came back up to the 6+ WAR range over the past 2 years. Age 22 Vladdy - 6.3 WAR Devers - 6.7 WAR Age 23 Vladdy - 2.8 WAR Devers - 0.7 WAR (2 WAR - 162 Game Pace)
