Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 Nate Pearson could be exactly what he’s been all year, irrelevant, BUT if he can stay healthy and be good again, he could be a massive add of swing and miss to the pen. I wouldn’t hold out hope

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 So game three against the Rays in the wild card series you're starting Stripling to face the order once and then bringing in Berrios to fire off 97+ and nasty curveballs for 2-3 innings right.

Makes perfect sense to me. I just hope they have the sense to throw Bass or Garcia or someone in there inning 4/5 if Stripling gets into a jam. Give Berrios a clean inning.

Stripling 2nd and 3rd time through the order has pitched better than Berrios any time through the order.

That's what I was thinking, 2 times though then Berrios. It'll work out fine barring injury. And first time through for Berrios is an advantage.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 Hasn't Berrios pitched 10 QS in his last 12 starts? And I think he never got passed 2 and a 3rd of an inning in his 2 shellings. He hasn't been that bad.

He hasn't been that bad. Basically this season Berrios is garbage in about a third of his starts. One or two starts have been masterpieces. The rest of the starts he's about league average. Do we even need to roster Berrios in a 3 game wildcard series? White has experience as a long man. I don't know if Berrios has even appeared as a reliever in his career.

Ehjays Verified Member Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 Blue Jays Acquire Edward Duran From Marlins By Anthony Franco | August 31, 2022 at 7:43pm CDT The Blue Jays announced they’ve acquired minor league catcher Edward Duran from the Marlins. He’s the player to be named later in the deadline day swap that sent relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop to Toronto in exchange for infield prospect Jordan Groshans. Duran was eligible to be traded even after the August 2 deadline, as he’s never occupied a spot on a 40-man roster. As MLBTR’s Steve Adams explored this month, players who have spent the entire season in the minor leagues and haven’t been added to an MLB 40-man or injured list at any point this year are still eligible to be traded. An 18-year-old catcher, Duran signed with Miami as an amateur free agent from Venezuela before the 2021 season. The right-handed hitter has spent the past two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. He’s never appeared on an organizational prospect ranking at FanGraphs or Baseball America. Bass has had a solid first month in Toronto, allowing only two runs in 12 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 12 while walking four. Pop has made seven MLB appearances and two in Triple-A since the trade, only allowing two runs in 6 2/3 big league frames despite striking out just one batter. Groshans, meanwhile, has raked with the Marlins top affiliate in Jacksonville. He’s hitting .342/.420/.487 with two homers in 88 plate appearances and will need to be added to Miami’s 40-man roster this offseason.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 30% of our remaining games are against Baltimore. I think these are what will put us in or remove us from the playoffs.

Yup. Its time for us to prove that the Jays are a playoff contender and that Baltimore is a major pretender.

The O's are actually calling up legit talent now so I'm not going to take them lightly. I still expect the Jays to hold on to a playoff spot, but I don't think the O's are all smoke and mirrors. Ultimately I think they end up with around 82-85 wins, while the Jays are in the high 80's. Although with the way the Jays are playing, I don't even want to assume high 80s is a certainty.

If the jays play like .500 ball the rest of the way (17-16) they probably get a playoff spot due to the fact that would mean several losses for Baltimore and Tampa. Its gonna be a dogfight this last month.

Baltimore is a good team with starting pitching that knows how to dominate Toronto’s right handed lineup. Low and away, low and away all day. Hope I’m wrong.

The O's are legit, and are gonna be a pain for the next while. They called up the #1 prospect in MLB earlier this year. And they just called up the new #1 prospect. They have the top pitching prospect. They also have 3 other top 100 guys that are MLB ready now/2023 on top of that. They have also shown they're willing to spend when they're competing. They're at the very bottom in spending now, just 5 years ago they were top 10. I think we potentially see them sign a big name this offseason.

The team had success from 2012-2016, so they had a strong 5 year window of being competitive. I could see the same with this current roster. It's not a 1 year thing, likely looking at them being a threat in the AL East for another 4 or 5 years if they spend wisely and their top young talent produces.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 70 W's with 33 to go. 13-14 in August. Need to play .636 ball in remaining gms to reach 2021 win totals (remember the '21 narrative "if only we played in TOR all season!") Either we are sandbagging and we get hot starting tomorrow or maybe we just aren't as good as many, including myself, thought.

The AL East will all be brutes. Thankful for balancing of schedule.

I think 17-16 the rest of the way is probably enough for a playoff spot considering 19 remaining games are against the Os/Rays I would prefer they play better than .500 though

The Jays were 30-20 in their first 50 games with a +9 run differential (so overachieving based on RD). They are 40-39 since then with a +40 RD, but take out the one game against the Red Sox which had a football score, and that drops to +17 over that span with a 39-39 record. In other words, I think there is enough sample size here to show that you would have to squint pretty damn hard to see anything other than an 85-89 win team at best this season. Nothing there to indicate that a leap in performance is coming other than hoping that the results start matching the talent. The 2021 team had a better all around roster with better performance from individual talent (Vlad, Semien, Ray, etc). Rotation was deep and reliable. This season has legitimate holes in the rotation and while the offense has been good it's been streaky. Bullpen has improved at least. I think the Jays still make it in, but last season I thought they'd have a legit shot at a WS if they got in. This year I think I'd be happy if they reached the ALDS. They need to start showing signs of life, and soon.

And we had a 4 man rotation of Ryu, Ray, Matz and Stripling/Pearson for the first several weeks with spot starts sprinkled in. This year we had a legit 5 man rotation on opening day with Gausman/Berrios/Manoah/Ryu/Kikuchi. s*** happens though. Somehow the rotation this year performed worse.
