connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 Terrible. Any word on age & cause of death? No word likely for a reason. Understandable
Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 What I would love to see at the coming deadline is a willingness to sell a little now for more future. Jansen has to go. It’s the shortest of short term thinking to carry a third catcher when most teams only have one good one. I also really think they should explore Teo trades at the deadline. He’s going into his last year of arb and there’s very little chance we can pay him. We have hitting right now. Trade him and Jansen for 3/4/5 close to the majors prospects, most of them pitchers. There will be a lot of teams who think they could sneak in this year. There will be a steal of a trade out there if we are willing to trade someone on the major league roster with value. Then trade for a rental hitter to replace Hernandez. Rental hitters are usually cheap. This might decrease our odds this year but they will increase our odds in the next few by a lot potentially. That’s a good deal imo.

That’s a good deal imo. I have a hard time seeing this front office making a move of this sort in which they weaken the MLB roster in a competitive season. Jansen is a no-brainer trade candidate eventually given the emergence of Kirk and reasonable debut of Moreno, but my money is on the front office eventually sending Moreno back to AAA for more regular playing time so that he's not sitting so regularly. Why is there very little chance the team can pay Teoscar? It's not like they are operating on a shoe-string budget, and it's been stated that as the team has more success and brings in more fans to the stadium payroll will continue to increase. I get that the Rays do a good job in remaining competitive given the financial challenges that they face, but I don't particularly find myself wanting to see the team I cheer for being run like it's full of nothing but mercenaries. The Rays don't have any fans that actually go to their games, so it's easy for them to point the middle finger at the fanbase with the constant churning of players as soon as they are on the verge of getting paid, but in a large market like Toronto it's simply not necessary to operate this way.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I don't think it's a question of can they pay Teoscar. Just matter of whether or not they should...
Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I don't think it's a question of can they pay Teoscar. Just matter of whether or not they should... Yea, that's what I meant. They can't pay him and pay other guys that are more important to pay. So, now's a great time to sell. Someone was talking about the Pirates Ray deal from a few years ago in the game day thread. Obviously, Teo isn't as enticing as three years of control of archer while he still seemed to be good but the only way to make those kinds of deals is by trading good major leaguers.

I have a hard time seeing it either but I really think it would be a smart thing to do. The way baseball operates, money can only take you so far. The yankees and the dodgers are loaded and their starting rotations still feature 4/5 and 3/5 homegrown players each. Houston have 4/5. They aren't buying full rotations because its basically impossible to do so. For one thing, there are only so many good starting pitchers even available in free agency. You simply can't maintain windows without cheap or cheapish good cost controlled starting pitching. The only way I see that happening without literally trading every good prospect we have is to trade from the major league strength.

Yeah, I think he’s trade bait for the winter though, not at the deadline. I’d be surprised if both Jansen and Teo are back next season. I could even see a Gurriel trade for the right return, though that’s far less likely

I could even see a Gurriel trade for the right return, though that’s far less likely You have to be willing to do it at the deadline. If the Rockies (somehow) or the Phillies are 3/4 games out of the last wild card spot at the deadline, and there are guys in their system that you really think are well underrated, you need to be able to take advantage of that. In the off-season, teams will dream on their prospects stepping up or reclamation projects. At the deadline, a team under ownership pressure can mess up.

Or maybe you can add a bit more and go after Luis Castillo instead of Berrios. Maybe the front office bought into the Berrios is a 1A SP everyone here did

Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Just saying they swung and missed. May be the past but certainly effects the future I mean, yes it does but you can’t go back and change it.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I mean, yes it does but you can’t go back and change it. Well no but definitely on them. They picked the wrong horse but were right to deal the prospects. Would’ve been right to deal Pearson and Groshans too. Moreno obviously remains to be seen despite the good sss.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 The Berrios "horse" isn't dead yet. And with the signing of Gausman and the emergence of Manoah all the Jays need Berrios to be is a steady number 3, which fits right into what he's been his whole career so far save for the 30 or so s*** innings he's given the Jays so far this year that is. I wonder what the cost would be to acquire Thor at the deadline? Probably not much seeing as he's a free agent with no control. Definitely a lot cheaper than acquiring Montas or Castillo. This is assuming the Angels sell.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Obviously you can't count on it, but it's going to be interesting to see how those highly touted pitching prospects pan out for the Jays over the next season or two. Frasso, Tiedemann and Zulueta could all be starting MLB games as early as next season. Hell, Zulu and Frasso because of their ages and already having TJS could see time in the Jays BP late this season if the stars align. If even one of them pulls a "Manoah" it will instantly alter the trajectory of the Jays future rotation in a good way. I'm also interested to see what Castillo turns into. He's looked pretty good (other than the first two MLB hitter he faced lol) and has a huge body of MiLB work that says he's a pretty decent pitcher.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 This team is around .500 the last 60 plus games, not the year to go all in imo
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 This team is around .500 the last 60 plus games, not the year to go all in imo Yeah, they have really been spinning their tires. Of course, a 20 win month in July could change things.
M.E. Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I chalk the last two games up to Bundinski. These are young men and trying to deal with death and the emotion of it can't be easy to perform.

And I would think of him as regular season innings + a reliever for the playoffs... not as a playoff SP unless absolutely necessary. The below numbers are stuff+ and command+ for four pitchers this year. I won't tell you the order but they are Greinke, Ryu, Syndergaard, and Chi Chi Gonzalez. lol. 89.9 --- 105.9 89.4 --- 106.9 89.8 --- 104.6 90 ----- 104.2

Dagagad Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I want them to trade for royals. The royals have drafted a ton of pitchers high that were rated highly and developed none of them well. Give me some of those guys.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 Drowned Either tubing down a river or behind a boat
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 The f*** does that mean? Falling from her tube?? RIP Julia "Saturday, July 2, two juveniles were floating on the river on an inflatable tube being pulled by a boat when they fell into the water. The operator of the boat turned it around to get them, and in doing so created a wave that changed the trajectory of the boat. The boat went over one of the teens, a 17-year-old girl, and she was struck by the propeller" https://www.wric.com/news/local-news/chesterfield-county/teen-killed-in-boating-accident-on-james-river/
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 That is brutal. I guess drowning really isn’t a better way to go though.
