Have him throw a sim game of 80ish pitches if needed. We already skipped a rotation spot with Stripling, and there was an offday so Berrios and Gausman can pitch with an extra day of rest still.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2022 Posted April 19, 2022 Instead, we’re going with Kikuchi and having Berrios and Gausman get 2 extra days of rest.

Lol they just signed him to a big deal. They aren't going to skip him after one bad start. And frankly part of that bad start could be due to rust. He threw like 7 total innings in spring which ended with his final start on April 1. Then he didn't make another start until his regular season debut on April 12. He needs to throw to get into form.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 OK, I know that this will be an unpopular post but here it goes. Management made the tough choice to end the Vladdy is a 3rd baseman experiment and it turned out spectacular. How about Espinal to SS and Bo to 2nd base. Does anyone think that Bo is a better defender than Espinal? i do not. many routine bad throws. many do not appear as errors as Vladdy has bailed him out a ton. IMO the only reason this has not been done is they don't want to get BOs nose out of joint. If this is a concern nobody wants Bo pissed off. BUT the team would be better if they switched positions. This switch worked out pretty well for Marcus Semien.

I kind of think the work is paying off and this will be a bit of a Marcus Semien situation.

The difference in defence between Bo and Espinal is not nearly enough to justify moving Bo. Not even close. Also, w/r/t last night's game... I spaced totally and missed it, but like... Kinda glad I did? Box score looks super frustrating, 1 run on 8 hits v/ 2 runs on 3 hits? Maddening.

Bo has had 0 walks in 49 PA and he's had a ball 3 in just 4 of 49 plate appearances. That's awful. I know it's early, spring training was shortened, but if you never get the 3 and 1 counts it's tough to do damage. He's just not going to see any balls in the strike zone if he doesn't develop some sort of plate discipline. He already has the best protection in baseball with Vlad hitting after him.

Meh... he isn't striking out much, his Babip's low so there's regression there, xWoba far better than his line, and it's only been 11 games. He'll still get to his 5-6% walk rate, kid can rake, I'm not worried.
BuckHenry Verified Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 On Bo’s errors last nite , both ground balls to his backhand were pretty well identical …. Airmailed his first one , then on the second he took something off his throw in order not to repeat …. he’ll learn from that …. still a very good up and coming SS … switching him and Espinal is nonsense.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Update: Jays are 4-0 when the ump isnt blind and affects the game by less than 1 run. Are now 2-5 when the ump's calls affect the game by more than 1 run.

The_DH Verified Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Right now, the argument would be that it's a small sample size, but teams need to be tracked over an entire season. I bet certain teams, media favourites, would have a lot more umpire support. They can keep Pete Rose out of the HOF for betting, but this is worse. Scandalous even.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Vlad tweaked a hammy stretching for those wild Bo throws Collins can play 1B though and has the superior bat to Craig Biggio's son.

I kind of think the work is paying off and this will be a bit of a Marcus Semien situation. If anything Bo has shown incredible improvement in his glovework, the last thing he heeds to sharpen up is the decision making and runner awareness. Both errant throws last night were on runners that are slooooooooow and he had plenty time to slow down after gloving the ball, set his feet better before the throw but he didn't because he failed to take the runners speed into account. Contrast that to the Bogaerts play where he absolutley had to rush to have any chance, and he nailed him on a much harder pick and throw.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 (edited) Huh? We lost yesterday and the Jays were in favour of calls. I'm not keeping tally of whether the Jays were in favour or not, just the W/L record when the overall run impact of the umps on the game is high or low. Incorrect strike zone calling affects certain teams more than others depending on the skillsets of the players. But, looking at the favoring... the Jays have had calls go their way in 5 games and are 4-1. When they arent favored, they are 2-4. Edited April 20, 2022 by John_Havok

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Do the bookmakers take into account who is umpiring?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Do the bookmakers take into account who is umpiring? The bookmakers probably have more advanced analysis than the front offices of most teams have.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 Oh, I see, I think?! Hah! Think of it this way - umps bad calls might impact the Jays by -1 run, and favor the opponent by +1.5 runs. That's an overall impact of 2.5 runs and in my totally random example, doesn't favor the Jays, we'll assume they lost that game. In another game, the calls might impact the Jays by -.2 runs, and favor the opponent by +.5 runs. So the overall impact is .7 runs, and still favoring the opponent. But the Jays win that game. Just trying to see if there's any correlation between well umpired games vs bad ones, regardless of which team ends up with the favoured calls. ... So far, the jays will win games that have less umpire impact and lose the ones with more impact.
