Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Deal is not unreasonable, with Narvaez projected for 2 WAR. I guess they feel Alvarez needs another year of seasoning.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Whatever the Vegas line is on Yankees season win total, I will be betting the under. The team is littered with old, injury-prone and overpaid/overhyped players. Yankees are basically the co-favourites with the Astros to win the World Series right now.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 The Royals just signed Cody Poteet to a minor league deal. First off, I was blown away he was a minor league FA. I thought he was under control and in the mix for being the Marlins 5th or swing SP. Second, he was someone I was hoping to Blue Jays would get as part of a package if we went after Lopez or someone like that from the Marlins. Third, if he was a minor league FA, why the hell did the Jays not sign him!!!?? I would have 100% let him compete against Kikuchi and White etc in the spring and I would have put money on him winning the job… Edit: Just saw he will be out all 2023. I knew he was injured last year but thought he would be ready for ST. My bad… Doiiiii

Yeah Yankees lineup is littered with old and injury prone players. Judge won't have the season he had in 2022. Stanton is becoming a guy who can barely hit .200 now. Donaldson I think is toast. Rizzo's best days are behind him as well. Torres might put up better numbers, otherwise their lineup is nothing special and could turn into a dumpster fire.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I expect pitcher health will be an issue for the Yankees as well, more so than for other teams. Yankees are a high variance team, could end up at either end of two extremes.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 haha, good luck with that Would rather just sign Gary Sanchez for a few quid

Rodon has never surpassed 200 innings before, Severino coming back from a major injury, Cortes maybe only gives them 5-6 innings every time out. Plus the bullpen has some holes as well.

When judging this you must include the Tax as well so technically its $14.75 MIl they are paying him. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/omar-narvaez-nearing-deal-with-mets.html Tacking on another $8MM brings the Mets projected 2023 payroll north of $343MM, per Roster Resource. The deal counts for $7.5MM against the luxury tax, since the player option is treated as guaranteed money when calculating its average annual value. New York has already shattered the fourth and final tier of CBT penalization, subjecting them to a 90% tax on every additional dollar spent. The Narváez deal will cost them an extra $6.75MM in taxes, meaning the Mets are committing $14.75MM to secure his services for next year alone (in addition to the 2024 option). That’s likely a far higher price than any other club would’ve paid, but it’s the latest example owner Steve Cohen is unconcerned about spending when the front office presents him an opportunity to improve the roster.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Swanson is the top position player left on the market and Nathan Eovaldi the top arm left. Taylor Rogers the top BP arm left. The rest of free agency are likely smaller deals, excluding a couple of guys who can likely get 2-3 year deals. Benintendi likely gets a 4-5 year deal wherever he signs. Wonder what blockbuster trades, if any, we see after Christmas and New Years.

True! Didn't consider this. The Narvaez salary is fine. The tax imposed on Cohen is really separate, and what he's doing is stupid, but its his money. More money than brains.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 People are probably expecting Carpenter to magically ops 1.500 again too Yankees sometimes get lucky with either a vet bouncing back in a big way or a young player/arm outperforming (e.g. Urshela, Cortes etc.).
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Can't believe the Orioles haven't spent anything this offseason.

I'm still pretty married to the idea of adding Rogers to really solidify the pen. You need that kind of quality to compete with the gauntlet of late innings arms that other clubs can role out. One more guy to join Romano in the late innings/high leverage mix, and the rest really falls into place quite nicely. Swanson has shown he can be pretty dominant in middle relief, no need to ask any more of him or count on Garcia, Cimber, Bass etc to be Romano's right hand man. As a bonus, Rogers adds a second lefty to the group. They've done a great job building/solidifying the rotation with the moves the last couple off seasons - should just spend that extra 10-12M to really back them up in the BP.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Can't believe the Orioles haven't spent anything this offseason. I saw a post on reddit that was a twitter post that their payroll has been pretty stagnant since the 90s.

I’m not even sure that would be a proper equivalent. Maybe splurge on a pizza
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I saw this with the Golden State Warriors. They signed Kelly Oubre and in real money, it cost them like $50m/year
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Do you ever splurge and buy a $200 bottle of wine? Does that make you stupid? This is more like splurging on a $1000 bottle of wine - and, yes, I think splurging on a $200 bottle of wine is stupid. Difference between doing stupid things and being stupid though.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Can't believe the Orioles haven't spent anything this offseason. I believe they signed Adam Frazier yesterday. Yup, 1 year 8M, and Gibson 1/10M. I did expect a lot more, they're in on Wacha apparently.

Might not be too bad of a signing if he rebounds with the bat, versatile in the least. f***ing guy has a dogshit season and then stings us in the playoffs.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I saw a post on reddit that was a twitter post that their payroll has been pretty stagnant since the 90s. What? 1998 they rolled out the highest payroll of any team. They were top 10 in 2017. Last year they were dead last. Reddit is the worst.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 5th eh?? Higher payroll than the Astros and Dodgers?? That’s interesting to see

Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Still a few interesting names there tho all the same.

Reddit is the worst. I'm looking through the source and it's been stagnant for the most part. Yes they were the highest in 1997 around 72M but they for the most part (5-6 seasons) haven't really spent money since then, they've been in that 70-90M range if not less. http://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-east/baltimore-orioles/ When you start counting for inflation they're spending less than they did 20 years ago. They're not the only team in this position either and with teams making more off TV deals I do feel like it's ********.
