I know health risk is always there, but I don't blame him for turning it down if he wants to bet on himself. On the open market he'd easily get over $40m AAV two years from now. He's making $17m this season. Two more years of arb he's likely looking at, what, $50m (give or take) over the next two years? So if someone will give him over $400m two years from now, plus the ~$50m he will get in arb over the next two years, then why would he sign that Nats deal? Only reason would be if he was terrified of injury or performance over the next 2 years, and he clearly isn't.

 

I agree it's tough to turn that much guaranteed money down, but if he feels he can get more, possibly much more, then good for him to bet on himself.

If guys like Trout, Betts, Lindor, Tatis Jr all topped out around 35M a year, IMO Soto at 30M is probably about right. He's potentially a sprinkler away from looking for a new career. It does not seem like a wise gamble to me in terms of risk and reward.

Soto is a generational hitting talent with probably the best offensive profile in the league, and year 1 of his FA deal will be his age 26 season. I disagree that he wouldn't be able to get $40m AAV, but even if he got a $35m AAV, a 12 year deal at that AAV is $420m + two years of arb before that. If he stays healthy and keeps performing like he has, then I think the only thing stopping him from $40m/yr is the amount of years he'd be looking for. Usually those long deals come at the expense of AAV. But in general, I think he's beating Trout's contract at a minimum, IMO. How much higher it goes depends on performance, health, etc.

I dont really blame him for wanting a higher AAV. Hell, his next arb contract will likely be 25 million and 30+ for the last one... so settling for less than 30m AAV is indeed settling for below market value AAV. But .... 440million dollars. Part of me hopes he breaks his leg tomorrow and he's out of baseball so he can live the rest of his life knowing he turned down 440 million dollars.

 

But that's mean.... so I hope he gets whatever he wants. This is the exact kind of player that should be earning way more money early in his career rather than playing for peanuts for years 1-3 or 4.

His power numbers were very decent with the Cards. He did hit 36 HR in 2018 and before hit 28, 21 and 23 from 2015 to 2017 before he became a dumpster fire.

 

8 of his 13 home runs have come at Yankee Stadium, so he must love that short RF porch. Also, he's hit 2 HR's at Fenway. He must love hitting in the AL East. Yankee Stadium really suits his bat well.

 

Regardless, I've always loved Matt Carpenter and it's great to see him resurrect his career like he has! Hope he keeps it up!
