Judge to the Blue Jays and he signs a 10-year extension worth $500 million to play in Toronto!
Dagagad Verified Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Rays are decimated right now. If they could collapse over the next few weeks, that would be helpful. I think their pitching is too good though.
AMS528 Verified Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 8 innings of shutout baseball and 13ks for Ohtani. Also 1/3 with a couple of walks. Between today and yesterday's 2 HR 8 RBI game, I'd say that's one of the best two day runs any player has ever had.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 How do you not have Houston on there? They are a clear top 3 to me. Basically have been a model org for the last 8 years or so. Minus the whole cheating thing lmaoooooooooooo Well the cheating thing, and the fact that 6 consecutive losing season, between 2009 and 2014 set up this run, including 3 - 50 something win seasons. Though they do seem to be sustaining it now without a down-cycle. Red Sox have had repeated winning cycles without much losing. Yankees and Dodgers have done it with no losing... but Red Sox don't have quite the resources of the other two.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Yeah I don't care that much about history. If we are doing org rankings it's basically a projection for me. Which organizations will be good going forward? History informs that of course because that's your best evidence for competency but the Red Sox just seem okay to me all things considered. Their biggest weapon is their payroll. They don't draft or develop amazingly. They consistently develop hall of fame caliber players. Devers, Bogaerts, Betts, in the last decade. Not sure those guys will be hall of famers, but hall of fame caliber meaning they are on track for 50+ WAR and could do it with a strong mid to late 30s. Boston isn't a crazy-huge market. In fact I think it is just a bit bigger than Tampa. However they have a large payroll because of a 35 year run of interesting teams, and no sustained stretches of losing. Done a good job modernizing the ball park. Good job generating revenue. Good job with analytics and signing the right free agents.

Not sure that applies to any of those three although Betts has an okay shot. That's not a great litmus. The Rockies s*** out a similar amount of stars, for example.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 I've never heard someone put down Babe Ruth when talking about Ohtani
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 I see it constantly in social media comments anytime there's a post about Ohtani. what do you mean by "put down" comparing them isn't a put down
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 The only knocks I have heard about Ruth are that he played in an era before integration and the level of competition he faced in general versus what Ohtani faces. I think both are pretty reasonable criticisms without diminishing his accomplishments. That context matters a lot given we are comparing two players nearly 100 years apart.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 The comments are more along the lines of "Ohtani is twice the player Ruth was," "Ruth would be trash today, he was only good because he played against firefighters and plumbers," stuff like that. There was a commenter on the football forum today saying it's a joke to consider Otto Graham among the best QBs ever and the backups today would be way better than he was. Just seems like a lot of younger fans can't seem to grasp the difference in eras and just consider today's athlete's way better (I mean they are, but they also have access to way more technology/training and you can only compare by the competition each player was against). Simply put, it's virtually impossible to compare players form today to players from 100 years ago. The game, while played under generally the same rules, is completely different. It's not ever really that arguable that todays players are far more highly skilled than players from 100 years ago, in any sport. if time travel was possible and you put Ohtani in 1920 to play baseball (and also made him white) he would hit a HR in probably 75% of his PAs. The velocity they threw back then would be like BP. Same as if you plucked Babe out of 1920 and magically transferred him to 2020, he would strike out so much it would be ridiculous. Then the argument inevitably turns into even more hyptheticals and ends up being a pointless exercise. That doesn't diminish his accomplishments in his own era. Hes still arguably the greatest player of all time. But direct comparing the two is, for the most part, pointless. And lets also not forget that there are near 0 people alive today that have seen both eras and how drastically the game has changed.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 That's insane. This is going to sound petty, but I have a hard time rooting for Ohtani because of how all the younger fans talk about him. They can't seem to praise him without putting down Babe Ruth while doing it. The younger fans today have zero respect for old time players. I too am one of those people

Agreed there’s no debate on skill, the debate is are the players today any more talented? Physically speaking. In baseball, I’m really not sure they are. So it’s really about if you drop Babe Ruth in 6u like you drop a kid today, how would he fare? I feel the talent would vastly separate itself now just like it would then. It’s an opinion of course, but not a ridiculous notion

Ohtani's career would have been over when he needed TJ to show the difference in eras lol

Do you expect them to be this good into their 30s? Nobody really should. To me they look like great players but not hall of famers. Obviously they could get in.
