Semien will be going on a huge hitting streak from this point forward. Will be one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the next 4 months.

At this point in time, every team in the league with a .500 or greater record would make the expanded playoffs. That's a pretty solid argument against any further expansion.

Based on the results so far this season the number of playoff teams at the moment seems to be just about right. The worst two win percentages of playoff teams right now belong to the Angels with a .540 win percentage, and the Giants with a .551 win percentage. Expand the playoffs any further and you start to see teams like the Rangers with a .490 win percentage and the Diamondbacks with a .481 win percentage make it in.

Ohtani doesn't have to worry about being MVP this year. Might as well just hand the Cy Young to Nestor Cortes right now too, amazing that the Yankees brought this guy up a couple years ago to be a middle reliever with absolutely no fanfare as a top prospect and now he's their best starter and hardly ever gives up a run.

Ohtani gets on, then gets picked off at first. Then Cortes strikes Trout out on a belt-high 87 mph cutter down the middle. Just clowning on the Angels.

Too bad he said mean things online 10 years ago.

Taillon perfect against the Angels through so far (7 IP); Yankees got two pitchers randomly performing super well, better than Severino or Cole.

---

Angels break with a Walsh double in 8th and take a 1 run lead.

Ortega about to give the run back by loading the bases

And 2-1 Yankees, Rizzo coming in clutch.

Man. Angels.

Yes it would have been nice to make more ground on them, but in the regular season we dont have to beat everyone. Just enough to get in the Play-offs.

Yankees of late haven't been that good with RISP but they are just getting HRs and these little clutch hits with some crazy good starting pitching.

As long as our starters don't serve up meatballs for HRs (which they are prone to do), we have a shot of taking the series coming up in a few weeks.

So, Florida has apparently vetoed $35M in gov't funding for a Rays spring training facility. I wonder if that's going to make the team pursue Montreal more seriously now... (Not that I'm a fan of government money being given to sports teams, I think that's asinine, but still).

I hope so. The Rays need to get the hell out of there.

Sources: Houston Astros, Yordan Alvarez agree to 6-year, $115M extension

12:18 PM ET

ESPN

Slugger Yordan Álvarez and the Houston Astros agreed to a six-year, $115 million contract extension, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. The deal will begin next season and buys out three of Álvarez's free-agent years, sources said.

The deal is the fifth largest for a player who has yet to reach arbitration, behind Fernando Tatis Jr.'s 14-year, $340 million contract, Wander Franco's 11-year, $182 million extension, Buster Posey's eight-year, $159 million deal and Mike Trout's six-year, $144.5 million agreement.

A unanimous Rookie of the Year Award winner in 2019, Álvarez played in just two games in 2020 as he underwent surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, along with arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

After a 2021 regular season in which he had career bests of 33 home runs and 104 RBIs, Álvarez, 24, followed that up with a stellar postseason. He was named ALCS MVP after going 12 for 23, including a 4-for-4 performance in the series-clinching Game 6 that sent the Astros past the Boston Red Sox and into the World Series.

This past offseason, Álvarez's contract was renewed by Houston, raising his salary from $609,000 to $764,600.

Álvarez, who serves as Houston's designated hitter and plays left field, enters Friday tied for third in the majors with 14 homers and has driven in 31 runs.

Smart to take the cash especially with two knee surgeries already at 24. Great for Houston to lock up one of the more under appreciated sluggers in the game.

Wonder how that shapes up Teoscar's market as well

Probably none. Teoscar's not a DH.

Alvarez is way better than Hernandez he's been better than Vlad per game as a hitter, both on average and peak (his 2019 was better than Vlad's 2022 per rate stats, only played 85 games though).

1. Just because Alvarez has been better than Vlad doesn't mean he will be going ahead

2. Alvarez has bad knees and hasn't played as many games as Vlad which makes him less valuable overall

But Alvarez has been a better hitter than Vlad so far... the guy is good.
