This is great. A truly bright day for baseball.

f*** you. This is not an acceptable opinion.

Get over yourself dude. The over the top dramatics are a bit much.

I can assure you that my opinion on extra inning gimmicks is completely genuine. Don't respond if you don't care about baseball. I don't care.

Also do you refer to the guy on 2nd as a ghost runner? I seem to remember the person being invisible when I played in wiffle ball games as a kid

This is disgusting. A truly dark day for baseball.

Oh relax, Grant. It's only for this season and I assume it's because of the condensed scheduling/travel. It's not the end of the world, bro.

How about you read the article for yourself, meat.

Yeah it's a terrible term that doesn't make sense

They said that last year too. If they don't have the slightest bit of respect for the game of baseball or the players who have played it for over a century then it's naive to expect them to start next year. It's truly shameful, the worst black mark on the game since 1994 or perhaps even earlier.

Well, that's over the top, lol. We'll see next year, if I'm not mistaken, the MLB don't want it and the players did which is odd, IIRC.

The Mariners and Padres have a new player development facility that they partially share, which was worth 7.7 million. It shows how truly advanced our 100 million dollar facility is. Way to go Shapiro!

I'm personally excited for when they bring in the HR Derby Showdown to replace extra innings.

I heard it'll be something like 3 batters from each team. And they get one pitch each, thrown by their own pitching coach. If it's tied after the 3 batters, each team will go 1 for 1 until it's no longer tied. Very similar setup to the NHL shootout.

Weird to take a strong stance if you don't care

When did you become the ultimate arbiter for what is good for baseball? Marathon games aren't good for players, management or broadcasters, so what are we really losing if they cease to exist?

What is so great about marathon extra innings games that they need to be preserved? Do you like watching position players pitch or something? Like it or not the game has been changing and it's becoming far more difficult for teams to cover the extra innings that these games entail. Management wouldn't like these games as it completely blows up a bullpen and it would be harder to work around due to the limit on player options. Players only end up with higher chance of injury due to fatigue and further disrupted sleep schedules. Nobody really stands to gain anything from marathon games so it makes sense to do something to attain a result in a more reasonable timeframe.

I'll agree the ghost runner idea is a bit gimmicky but this is nowhere as bad as something like a shootout. The same basic rules of the game still apply, there are still the same number of fielders, the same battle between pitcher and batter occurs, there are 3 outs per side, home team bats last etc.

In tournament play, soccer goes to penalty kicks

Hockey goes to a shootout

NFL OT rules are dumb

Basketball doesn't count

MLB might have the least stupid OT rule of any of those sports even with the runner (who is not a ghost runner)

I’d say a poll of baseball fans on this subject would result in 80 pct anti ghost runner. I’ve yet to talk to someone who likes it. I detest it

I can't say I 'like' the rule. I think it feels dumb and gimmick, and would honestly prefer a tie.

But I can't say I could muster the energy to get that mad about it. And I don't miss even the occasional 20 inning game.

No offense, but fans are dumb and people naturally hate change.

There’s still millions of fans absolutely furious about the DH coming to the NL. We’ve had it for years and it’s been just fine, and you could argue its a more significant change to the original rules of the game when compared to the new extra innings rule.

It’ll be ok people.

It's a baseball forum where people voice their opinions. We're altering the fundamental rules of the game for no discernable benefit and the vast majority of paying customers do not support it. That's been shoen jn numerous polls. The fact that you have no care or respect for the game doesn't make yours the only valid opinion.

Switching to 3 balls and two strikes for a walk and a strikeout, respectively, would be good for players and broadcasters as well. They could all be paid the same to do less work, which is the stated goal of this change. You're making a truly asinine argument with no basis in fact.

Do I like strategy in games? Yes. Do I like watching managers have to manage their bullpens? Yes. Do I like seeing position players pitch in extreme circumstances? Yes, it's actually exciting. The Chris Davis game is one of the best I have watched. Every avid baseball fan on this forum remembers it. That's hardly exclusive to extra innings even if you don't like it.

I'm not against change in baseball like some are suggesting, but you can only go so far before it's not baseball any more. The need to get on base to score a run is perhaps the must fundamental aspect of the entire game and we are throwing that rule in the trash, enraging almost all fans.

Well, it's a terrible rule that doesn't make sense, so the name is fitting! :)

I guess I'm in the minority but I like marathon games. The more baseball the better. They also get more nerve wracking the longer they go as bullpen depth gets tested and winning those games is very satisfying.

I would have much preferred that if they insisted on doing this, that it started in the 13th or 14th inning.

I'd be curious to dig into this a bit more and find out if fans 'say' they don't like this change - but does that opinion actually show up in their actions. Ever checked the stands in the 14th inning of a Tuesday night game? Based on my experience, a lot of people will hang around for the 10th inning, but it thins out pretty damn quick after that. No idea if they can track this, but I'd love to know how many fans turn the game off after 9th or 10th inning.

And I believe polls will also show you that baseball continues to lose fans because the game is too long/slow - hence all the changes to speed the game up.

As noted above - I'm surprised you're not more upset over losing the DH in the NL. I suspect polls will tell you that fans hate this decisions and LOVE seeing pitchers hit .105/.126/.210 because bunting is super exciting. Polls would also tell you that fans hated the idea of eliminating the take out slide and running over catchers because violence is fun to watch.

Agreed. I've said before, I think baseball has taken the longest to evolve of the major sports because of its fear of change. A fanbase that leans to the older side is probably going to hate change a little bit more, but it feels like with baseball, even the tiniest thing is going to cause a rage among the core fans. The game on the field is in bad shape and needs to be massaged a bit to become a more entertaining product. Not just for young people, but everyone. As someone mentioned, no one benefits from extra innings. Not the players, not the owners, not the fans (who leave in droves during extra innings anyway), not the TV networks, etc. A "ghost runner" increases the likelihood of a game ending at a reasonably time and both teams have to play by the same rules. It's not a perfect setup, and if you want to say it's a bit gimmicky, then fine, but it's a reasonable rule in terms of trying to get the games to end sooner and avoiding marathons. If we never see an 18 inning regular season game again, is anyone going to be disappointed?
