Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 The Yankees are in agreement on a deal with free-agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo Well that takes them out of Freeman you would think. Definitely
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 10:14pm: It’s a two-year deal in the $30MM – $35MM range, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter). 10:06pm: The Yankees are in agreement on a deal with free agent first baseman Anthony Rizzo, reports Jesse Rogers of ESPN (Twitter link). The deal is pending a physical.
Key22 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Great deal for Yankees jeez $32m for two but he only put up 1.7 WAR - seems like a lot of money for an average bat at first. I sort of think you can find that output somewhere else for less. At least they didn't land Freeman or Correa
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Im honestly kinda shocked it seems the Yankees won’t be getting either of Correa/Freeman

The Yankees paying 15 million to get someone who isn't really an upgrade on Luke Voit is good for us.

He kinda had 2 down years in a row though… not sure he returns to the 130wRC+ hitter he used to be. Although he did look good for the Yankees down the stretch last year
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 He had a down year I'd bet he puts up better numbers next 2 years, no? Nah
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 He had a down year I'd bet he puts up better numbers next 2 years, no? I think that's unlikely at his age and with underlying metrics mostly supporting his decline at the plate and in the field.

Although he did look good for the Yankees down the stretch last year He was worse with the Yankees than he was with the Cubs, believe it or not. I think they would have been better off keeping Luke Voit and spending the money elsewhere.
Key22 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 He had a down year I'd bet he puts up better numbers next 2 years, no? He had a down year in 2020 and 2021. And he's not getting younger. If the 2019 version shows up it's a good deal. Perhaps adjusting to the AL is all that is needed.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Why wouldn’t they just roll with Voit instead of signing another aging immobile slugger?
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Why wouldn’t they just roll with Voit instead of signing another aging immobile slugger? I think they believe Voit's knee is toast. No other reason to spend 32M or whatever on Rizzo with Stanton clogging up the DH spot.

Ray Verified Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Down to Dodgers, Rays, and I guess us for Freeman? Red Sox and Padres apparently in the mix too, but I don’t see the fit there. My guess is he still ends up with the Dodgers and Freeman’s agent is just using the rest of the teams as leverage. Just makes far too much sense at this point, but I hope I’m wrong and we’re still in the running.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Voit getting traded? Early on I figured he’d be a piece of an Olson trade to Oakland but it’s entirely possible he’s an injury waiting to happen like BTS said. Either way I think they have to move on from him now, too many guys not enough AB’s. Roster resource has DJL on the bench (that contract looks bad rn)
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 (edited) Meh, I don't think it's a bad signing, if he hits near his projections that contract's fine, his Babip was very low his last 190+ game's. Deadcat bounceback incoming. Edited March 16, 2022 by Spanky99 I'm dumn... meant games, not Ab's???
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Rizzo is fine but you’d expect the Yankees to be able to do better than him. They needed a big move and instead they are plugging a hole with a mid tier FA.

It’ll be weeks before he gets a baseball back in his hand.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 They talked for year about "when will Sale break". If it was going to happen eventually, at least it was is falling apart for the Sox. In a vacuum it sucks to see him diminished tho

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Schwarber gets 'just under' 4/80 according to Jayson Stark. That's a definite no for me, I'm glad we passed.
