Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 I hate the Braves. Lucky World Series win and then they turn around and can't find cash for a Braves legend like Freeman? I hope the Mets and Phillies (also two trash orgs IMO) smash them this year.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 The Braves are likely better off with 2 years of prime Olson rather than 5-6 years of Freddie's decline, but man, I don't know if it's cheap ownership or AA suddenly only wanting to give out poverty contracts but after winning a title and making a ton of money as a team, Freddie was the guy to overpay if anyone.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 All 4 are top 100 to 150 range IMO If I squint I can see Pache turning into prime Pillar, Langeliers becoming a good starting C, and the two pitchers working out. But I can also see this being another JD to Toronto trade where Beane moves an elite player and has nothing to show for it a couple years later. Olson is a top-10 hitter and top-20 player in baseball, and I think there should have been at least one player with elite upside in the return.

A couple of 2 WAR guys and some decent pitching prospects. Yawn.

Agreed, deal doesn't look that great for the A's at all. Maybe one or two of the players turn out ok or good, but certainly not the haul that Passan was hyping it up to be.

I also hate seeing the face of the franchise let go due to money, but from an organizational perspective, it probably makes a f*** ton of sense - especially if they use the money they saved (from Freeman to Olson) to sign another impact FA. I could see them using that money to sign a Conforto or another arm or two, which would give them a significantly better shot at winning in 2022 and 2023 than signing Freeman would have.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 That’s a s***** haul for Olson but classic A’s trade us 4 boring players and you can take the pick of the crop

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Need to keep Tatis away from Vladdy
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 With a classic Yankee offseason they could have landed as the favorites in the AL East. Instead they have tied up 106 million in Stanton, Donaldson, Chapman, Britton and Hicks and are scouring the market for mid-tier FAs. You love to see it.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Mike Trout found out on twitter that the Angels were moving him to the corner outfield. Brilliant move by them.

Sign FF, pencil Rodon in behind Cole and plant Castellanos in the OF Now they're trading for IKF to shore up SS until a 20 year old is ready

Pick vehicle you want just not a motorcycle. That's such a massive blow to the Padres.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Anyone else notice a large contingent of Braves fans in Canada between 35-45? Poor bastards

How do you even give them a heads up? Sounds like a deal that came together quickly.

I know, it's such a ridiculous concept that an independent worker is owed a courtesy call for a time sensitive issue. He's not even employed by them anymore.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Yeah I mean it's not like Freeman has been acting all that loyal to the organization either. Testing the FA waters is one thing, but this goes well beyond that. I still think the Braves should have tried harder to bring him back but he wasn't exactly begging to return.
metafour Verified Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 (edited) That’s a s***** haul for Olson but classic A’s trade us 4 boring players and you can take the pick of the crop What makes this deal s***** for the A's? All four guys they got back are legit prospects. Pache's star is falling because he hasn't hit, but Langeliers has all-star type upside and improved significantly with the bat last season (it's elite defense + arm + strong power output). Cusick was their 1st round pick last season (he was also one of our targets) and came out hot as a Pro + he has one of the strongest two-pitch mixes in the minors (he's up to ~100mph and has a strong floor as a high end reliever). The other pitcher they got was the biggest riser in Atlanta's system last season; like Cusick he has a high floor as a reliever, but he has even better current pitchability and starter qualities. They got #1, #3, #5, and #8 in Atlanta's system based on the ProspectsLive rankings. Edited March 14, 2022 by metafour
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 So does this trade set the market for what type of return Ramirez might get? Friendlier contract compared to Olson but they are same years of control, similar caliber players with Ramirez having a longer track record. Maybe that makes the Jays equivalent Groshans, Pearson, Kirk and Hoglund? Doubt Indians would get Moreno or Orelvis.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Yeah I don't think the Olson return is that bad. Pache and Langeliers could be everyday players as defense first guys. How much of Olson's 2021 changes will stick forever? I guess it was a full healthy season so the K rate reduction should stick but.... his track record does make me think some regression will happen.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 Two upside pitching prospects, a 4th OF and a backup catcher I would not be pleased with that return for a legit 40 homer middle of the order masher I hate the model of trading all star players for a casserole of players. Nothing about what Oakland or TB does is exciting to me.

Ya, Freddy is a great player, but its not personal for him or them. His Agent was grinding, and Braves made other plans. Just business. Its a great move for Braves as opposed to saddling themselves with a 5-6 year expensive deal for a 32 year old.
