Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Has there been any word on whether extra innings exist again? One of the biggest rule changes in the history of the sport has gotten little press.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Baseball better get their s*** together ASAP. With gas skyrocketing and food prices soon to rise significantly, (over 65% of the Potash and urea comes from the BeloRuso/Ukraine area- both needed need to grow food efficiently. Less yield by American/Canadian farmers, less supply, but higher field to shelf costs equal higher consumer costs) no one will be able to afford to go the games or have 15 different streaming services to watch baseball. Horrible, horrible timing for a labor dispute...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Tim Healey of Newsday reports that MLB is not seeking to implement an international draft until 2024. This news may placate the uneasiness of some current and former players -- including Fernando Tatis Jr. and David Ortiz -- who have expressed concern that certain Latin American markets are not yet ready for the sea change that an international draft would bring. The topic is a sticking point in the ongoing CBA negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA. Word is the new deadline for a deal is sometime Wednesday afternoon. --------- This would allow us to sign Bonilla right? Sounds good to me!
jerb Verified Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi Sounds like this round of talks nearing a decision point. Players handed owners a counter, as others have mentioned, and MLB is expected to counter that, source tells @bnicholsonsmith and me. A vote on a player side is possible afterwards. No guarantee a deal gets done. Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi A player vote would consist of all 30 player-union reps and eight subcommittee members, with a majority carrying the day, source tells @bnicholsonsmith and me. Situation fluid. If no deal, future talks complicated by shortened sked, 162-game pay and service time considerations.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Bob Nightengale @BNightengale The two sides also remain far apart on the pre-arbitration pool and the CBT after their last proposals. PRE-ARB POOL: MLB: $40 million MLBPA: $70 million plus $5 million increases each year. CBT: MLB: $230M, $232M, $236M, $240M, $242M MLBPA: $238M, $244M, $250M, $256M, $263M
jerb Verified Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Almost no progress made today on another deadline day. Union moved slightly on CBT (now $12M apart in year 5) and bonus pool (still far apart) but they r not close. MLB may make another counter offer today but hard to see deal getting done today. Cancellation of more games looms.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Canada produces one third of the world's supply of potash and is the world leader by a huge margin. Very true, but 95% of it is exported already, so a shortage overseas probably doesn';t change what Canada does with it's own supply. I doubt our production can be increased very much in the short term
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 why is it their fault? I'm mostly just salty because I think the International draft is a very good thing for the game, and it seems like the biggest issue preventing a deal, with what should be easily-bridged differences in CBT and pre-arb bonus pool.

I doubt our production can be increased very much in the short term I have little knowledge of this subject, but I would imagine that the remaining 5% supplies the majority of our domestic needs.
jerb Verified Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Jesse Rogers @JesseRogersESPN Ownership source indicates league previously thought there was a trade ready to be made: International draft in exchange for direct draft pick compensation. Union is not there on the draft. 1/3 Jesse Rogers @JesseRogersESPN Source: League offering 3 options: Sign the CBA, including eliminating draft pick compensation, and take some time to examine the international draft. If the union won’t implement within a couple years (by '24?), the league can re-open the CBA. 2/3 Jesse Rogers @JesseRogersESPN Second option: Do the entire package without the draft which means without draft pick compensation. Third option: Take the original deal. League gets the international draft and draft pick compensation is eliminated. 3/3
jerb Verified Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Sides are definitely getting close on CBT: MLB: $230, $232, $236, $240, $242 PA: $232, $235, $240, $245, $250
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 I thought they agreed on eliminating draft pick compensation already like... 3 weeks ago? Why is that suddenly back on the table?
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Expecting this to get done by tonight if those are the differences. Only ego can prevent this from getting done at this stage.

The financial bridge here is almost non-existant.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Canada produces one third of the world's supply of potash and is the world leader by a huge margin. As the US goes, so does most of the world. Toronto is one of 30 Teams. If the fans of the 29 US Teams are struggling to pay for gas and put food on the table they are not going to be going to baseball games and they are not going to be paying $150 USD a year for MLBTV or some combo of Apple TV and NBC streaming services etc, etc. When people need to cut back, these are the types of things that go first.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 And the gap in bonus pool is 25M, split among 30 teams. The financial bridge here is almost non-existant. MLBPA wants $65 million with $5m increases every year, so it will be $85m by year 5. The owners want $40m flat. Over a five year span that's a difference of $200m (owners) versus $375m (players). So gap is still pretty significant. CBT is close enough to where that shouldn't be an issue. I have no idea why the players care about the international draft at all. Those prospects are not part of the union. It's the reason why you can tell Tony Clark that minor league players are getting paid with peanut butter sandwiches as currency and he wouldn't flinch because it has no impact on the union. Seems like an odd thing to be a non starter.

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 So one of the MLB proposals was no international draft and the QO stays. They players rejected the MLB proposals and countered with this. MLB canceled more games. So we're to believe that one year of QO's caused negotiations to collapse? This s*** is unbelievable.

It seems as if the players were under the impression the Owners would counter-offer again, but instead they said f*** it and cancelled more games. Each side wants THEIR offer to be accepted, and they don’t want to have to accept the other side’s counter-offer. Its all so f***ing petty. It was so close and they all blew it. Now they’re gonna have to argue about full pay for 150 games or something like that in addition to the already existing issues.

The players position has gone from fighting for the little guy, to increased CBT to having the owners cave to their every want. I am completely supportive of the owners. They seem like to only ones to actually want baseball and finally today had had enough of the PA’s s***.

Unless they come up with an agreement tomorrow out of the blue, this lockout is going to last longer now. Even if they somehow agreed on all the topics (CBT, pre arb, etc), soon they'll have to figure out how 2022 salaries and service time will be distributed for less than 162 games. Hint: owners will want prorated salaries, players will want full salaries, and more s*** to have to work out. Losing games because of the QO is insane to me. I can't even wrap my head around that.
