Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Figured the Astros would win as soon as the Braves hit their grand slam. Seems like every elimination playoff game where one team jumps out to a big lead, they start to get defensive and tighten up while the other team chips away and eventually wins. Still think the Braves will win but it would've been nice for them to do it at home.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Author Posted November 1, 2021 Game 7 in extras, put up 3 and watch the stadium die!!!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Author Posted November 1, 2021 Who'd have thought Maldanado would be key?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 He needs to stop with the pearls. He sucks. Going to bed. They need to start these games at 715 MLB is doing itself a disservice with these long / late WS games. Not the way to grow a fanbase.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 MLB is doing itself a disservice with these long / late WS games. Not the way to grow a fanbase. Stupid take. The reality is that the WS is a possible 7 games over the span of 8 days. Most casuals won't watch more than 2-3 of the games. Changing the start time does nothing to change that. As for the length, there's really nothing they can do. Its not any different than NFL/NBA where the final 10 minutes of the game takes like an hour to finish with all the timeouts and crap.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I'm still hoping there is a way for both these teams to lose. I don't want to see the cheats win but it pisses me off to no end that a team with less wins than the Jays, and who the Jays went 6 for 6 against this season, is on the brink of a WS championship because they got hot at the right time and just happen to be in the shittiest division in baseball. They shouldn't have even got a sniff of the playoffs never mind win a WS. They won 88 games in a division where 2nd place only won 82.

"Stupid take"? lol It's my opinion that starting games after 8 pm and extending almost to midnight (EST) is not optimum. If you have evidence to the contrary, great. Otherwise, your opinion is just as stupid, to use your terminology.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I mean the games start at 8 to blend across all time zones. You would think that those on the west coast who aren't off work until 5 would miss the start of a 7 pm EST game, but that does seem like a lesser evil than so many turning the game off to go to bed at 11 pm EST. I'm sure those a lot smarter than us understand this all better. That said - I've always found it crazy to think that people live in areas where football games start at 10 or 11 am - or baseball/hockey games start at 5 pm. I guess it's all what you're accustom to, but that seems so bizarre to me.

Ya, if some on the west coast miss an inning or two, that's a lesser problem than those on the east shutting it off in the 6th of 7th inning.

But a lot of us old-timers won’t see the end of games on the EC
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 The NBA starts Finals games at 9 pm EST. Of course, basketball games are usually around 2 and a half hours long and have a clock, so it's pretty much guaranteed to end before 11:30 (unless there are overtimes), but that's still pretty late in the east. Baseball just happens to be a game without a clock, and you can't really predict pace of play because a lot of times it depends on who is pitching, how many pitching changes, how many runs are being scored, etc. Even if games started at 7:05, they could conceivably still end after 11 pm. The only thing MLB can do is add a pitch clock and hope it cuts a decent chunk of time from the games on average. You can't really fundamentally change what baseball is to make the games faster, so killing as much dead time as possible is the only way.

Idk what I’d do for 2 hours after work every day if I had to wait until 7pm for the Jays

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Commute home plus prepare and eat dinner Meh, for those of us in the west, these start times are perfect. The east can suck donkey nuts.

Idk what I’d do for 2 hours after work every day if I had to wait until 7pm for the Jays That's an interesting perspective - thanks for sharing. I suspect it truly depends on what you get used to. For me, 5-8 is typically time for stuff with my kids. Often that includes their own hockey/baseball and we're missing the start of the game or listening on the radio during the drive (unless we tape it). Once showers are done, we sit down and watch some baseball until it's time for bed.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 I haven't watched 1 WS game this season, they are on way too late for me. With a 9:10pm start time and a possible 4 hour game, it wouldn't get over until 1AM.

With a 9:10pm start time and a possible 4 hour game, it wouldn't get over until 1AM. I don't think you're the target market. Still - if you love baseball, why wouldn't you tune in to watch at least the first half of the game? I assume most Jays games start at 8:07 for you? Do you watch them? It would be interesting to talk to someone in the know at MLB to see what the data suggests. If I lived in the west coast, I think I'd actually love a 4:07 start time. I would tape the first hour or so while I'm still at work - which would allow me to skip through all the commercials and pitching changes and reduce how long it takes for me to watch the game. That's a win-win all around. I actually do this quite a bit with Jays/Raps games when I'm stuck parenting or at a hockey/baseball game late. The key is keeping your phone or notifications off so you don't end up seeing the score until you're watching.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 If Fried was a soccer player, he would have been rolling around the entire length of the stadium on that play. The Slo-Mo makes it look 1000x worse too.
