G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 Scott Mitchell @ScottyMitchTSN Julian Merryweather retooled his throwing program this winter and says he feels stronger and healthier than he’s ever felt. Velo has been in the 96-98 band, and he thinks his curveball took a step forward this winter, trying to throw it for strikes early in counts. #BlueJays King Julian for the girls mon Would LOVE to see him come back full force Pearson/Merryweather/Romano yes yes yes

Ray Verified Member Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 I've been fooled before believing these kinds of reports on players in the past. That said, it would be incredible if that arm can stay healthy. Worth noting that Jordan Romano kept getting injured as well until the Jays helped retool his throwing program because the High Performance Department noticed he was stressing his body by throwing too much. Hopefully it can help Merryweather stay healthy too. If so, the bullpen would look so good: Romano Mayza Merryweather Cimber Richards Garcia Pearson Stripling Vasquez Incredibly deep.

Pimping the BP before the season = playoffs will be easy to make

Not sure I would call it incredibly deep. Pearson and Julian are wild cards. If they don't stick then it's Romano and just some guys. Like it's not a top 10 pen

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2022 Posted March 21, 2022 The BP is a bunch of generic hard-throwing guys with a lot of injury risk/history and control issues. Not exactly what I would call deep but also something that would be adequate for this squad if things were to land in an average scenario for this year. It is the worst, or pretty close to the worst bullpen of all the teams in the AL expected to get a playoff spot. Don't be surprised if Cimber and Mayza end up being the most consistent members throughout the year.

Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted March 21, 2022 Author Posted March 21, 2022 Lol. Didn't he get to camp last season at 241? I don't think weight is a great indicator at any rate. Muscle weighs more than fat, and if he has put on brawn and toned up a lot, he may end up weighing more than last season.

Muscle weighs more than fat, and if he has put on brawn and toned up a lot, he may end up weighing more than last season. He has great natural strength and hand eye coordination. The issue in 2019/2020 was that he was so obese that he looked unbalanced and that bat looked slow. 2018/2021 he was a bit pudgy but the gut wasn't so big that it wrecked his balance. Did he play last year at 260 and is now 240? How fat was he in 2020? Like 280?

Furthermore, you tend to look bigger and more vascular when you lose weight anyways.

Most athletes put on weight in the early portion of the off-season to build strength and power and then periodize their training to peak around the start of spring training. Players burn a ton of calories in season and don't have many opportunities to weight train ergo why many programs are structured this way.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2022 Posted March 21, 2022 (edited) He has great natural strength and hand eye coordination. Did he play last year at 260 and is now 240? How fat was he in 2020? Like 280? We was in the 280s in October on 2020. Said he lost 40+ pounds last offseason and he came to camp at 241 if memory serves. I guess he added another 20 pounds either in the offseason or during the 2021 season (gradually so it wasn't noticeable) then lost it again this offseason to get back to 239. I agree that weight isn't the perfect indicator, cause muscle weighs more... And kudos to him for putting in the offseason work. Hopefully in the coming years we'll see a bit more definition. But that takes time. Edited March 21, 2022 by Krylian

There is no comparison there and I'm saying that as a Raptors fan first and foremost.
Ray Verified Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 I’m absolutely shocked that a Spring Training game against the Pirates outdrew a good young Raptors squad against maybe the most star studded team in the NBA (Harden/Embiid). Kinda nuts. The Jays when they’re good really are a cash cow. No wonder Rogers is pouring so much money into the Jays.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Raptors only on SN1 effects those numbers but still that’s a massive haul for the Jays
