RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Brutal to give up that much. Maybe could have been fair if they threw in Donaldson and Taylor.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Hahaha uhhhh I guess Austin Martin could be mediocre but shouldn't he alone be enough for Berrios? They must have been in a serious bidding war Only a playoff appearance reduces the sting of this trade
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 They must have been in a serious bidding war Only a playoff appearance reduces the sting of this trade Extnesion imo is key..they have to sign him longer term to give up those 2.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Exactly, trade seems like overpay but some reactions here are bad. It is a horrid trade given the uncertainty of next season, less so if a lockout wasn't looming like a black cloud on the horizon.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 In a 5 game series throwing Berrios, Ray and Ryu seems pretty excellent Steep price to pay though And there's a long way to to try and make it to the ALDS
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Dude - that only works if you assume we have an unlimited team budget. Berrios makes $6.1M this year. Who were you signing for that amount as a FA who's as good as Berrios (who also wanted to play for Toronto)? Look at our overall payroll, we're like 50 million less than our usual competing years. We gave up 2 amazing prospects for 1.5 years of Berrios and then what do you expect his contract to be? Just a joke of a trade.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 It's set in stone. Time to come to grips with it.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 You know there is another season after this one right? Berrios is signed for next season..its not just about this year. "Like someone said, a lockout next year could even essentially make Berrios a rental."
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Really feels like this deal should have included a Kirilloff or a Royce Lewis - or another piece to help us now like Rogers. Some sort of bone.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Kevin Smith > Austin Martin, anyway
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 "Like someone said, a lockout next year could even essentially make Berrios a rental." If's could's, maybes...we will see. I cannot see them being dumb enough to lock out the league again after a pandemic. IMO it's more about signing him to an extension then a lockout./
Benito Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I really hope this works out. Ray, Ryu, and Berrios can help team go on a run and make push for playoffs. Still only 4.5 back of 2nd WC. No one knows what Martin and SWR will eventually turn into, but right now, the loss of Martin hurts.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 They must have been in a serious bidding war Only a playoff appearance reduces the sting of this trade Why the hell do we even need to get into a bidding war to 1.5 years of Berrios? There needs to be an extension involved or we just got raped. Imagine if there's a work stoppage...
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Man, it just feels like if went around the league and said we'll package SWR and Martin, you couldve gotten more value for them.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 "Like someone said, a lockout next year could even essentially make Berrios a rental." I think we have to assume that Shatkins has a good read on that situation. A much better read then reports and the general public. I'm still baffled you couldn't have gotten a young arm with like 3+ years of control for that cost.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 LOL at the whining over picking up pitchers via free agency. Berrios for Martin and SWR > Gerrit Cole for $350 million. Also, didn't the Jays just pick up a guy in Ryu via that route?
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Damn if that was the price for Berrios then the Jays should have just moved on. Is Berrios even a top of the rotation pitcher? Two top 50 prospects for a number 3 pitcher who only has 1 year and two months of control is far too steep a price for a team that is only battling for a wild card spot.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Again, obviously the Blue Jays don't really think Martin and SWR are both top 50 prospects. They probably have some doubts after watching them all year.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Better be another move for more bullpen help, Ryu-Ray-Berrios can't go 9 every start.

He's the 8th best pitcher in the AL right now. I'm not sure that's equivalent to a #3 starter (unless he was on the White Sox I guess).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Will enjoy watching him pitch for us that's for sure Really really wish they hadn't sent Martin though damn Mixed feelings big time He was our best pick in YEARS
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Again, obviously the Blue Jays don't really think Martin and SWR are both top 50 prospects. They probably have some doubts after watching them all year. Yeah that would be my guess, plus confidence in Groshans and MArtinez.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I don't care much for this. And as annoying as Stroman is, him and Berrios project about the same this year. Would have probably just been smarter to keep him.

Berrios is definitely a front of the rotation pitcher. He and Ryu are like 1A and 1B.

Third string starter? Oh please he is top ten pitcher in the league right now... You can not like the deal and not exaggerate to make a point.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Maybe the team does not view martin as highly as the fanbase.... The league clearly values Martin as everyone is saying we paid too high of a price. Look at what the Padres and Dodgers have been giving up in their trades. That's how you get things done. We wasted half a season with no bullpen and a whatever rotation. Just a panic trade by Shatkins when there was no reason to.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Also remember what the Jays did with Ray last year. Berrios might magically become really good down the stretch
FantasyNewb Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Such a dumb f***ing trade no matter how you spin it.

Ya think that might affect Ownership's willingness to spend?
