If Yates had returned to even half his 2019 performance (fWAR wise) this would have been a huge win for the Jays. I think ultimately the Jays rise or fall on the internal personnel anyways. Merryweather setting up Romano could be a pretty good combo (shades of Davis and Holland with the Royals in 2014?)

It sucks to lose the potential elite reliever but if Yates were to have a fantastic season he would have been a steal on his contract anyway. $5.5M in burned payroll also should not be a massive deal... should not.

A healthy Yates could have made a difference of 2-3 wins.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I'd love to know if we were in on Trevor Rosenthal and if he was reluctant to sign here b/c we already had Yates...
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2021 Author Posted March 24, 2021 Being a GM must takes years off your life. I can't imagine Ross slept well after the guy he gambled 5.5M on blew up before throwing a regular season pitch. I'd be pissed if that happened in fantasy baseball and there's no national spotlight or corporate overlord wondering where their money went.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Christ, what a cursed news dump. At least Springer/Ray won’t be out long (you’d hope) If this isn’t cursed I don’t know what is. Keep everyone in bubble wrap until opening day
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 If this isn’t cursed I don’t know what is. Keep everyone in bubble wrap until opening day It should be noted if it happened in a game of pickup basketball we wouldn’t know about it

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Does anyone want to buy a Jays Yates jersey?
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 Such stupidity, gee what a surprise when you sign a gimp coming off surgery who just missed 90 % of last season with pitching arm issues. Now they can pay him to sit home like the Padres did last year, great signing Pretty much. Back to the drawing board morons

I dunno, wouldn't it be an expectation that at least 1 player will be lost for the season during ST or shortly into the season?

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I wonder if Rosenthal was ever an option. I mean, if the Jays knew Yates was a risky enough signing to reduce the offer from 8.5 to 5.5, why not just add a couple million and offer that to Rosenthal instead? Again, assuming he was an option and willing to sign with the Jays.

Ya, relying on a player who failed multiple physicals to be your closer in a season when you're expecting to make noise seems like a bad decision. These type of risks seem fine for meddling teams or teams that don't have payroll constraints. Wonder how we'll pivot from this news but I am curious how often this stuff happens and we don't hear about it.

I mean, very realistic chance that even with a healthy Yates all year, Romano ended up as the closer for the bulk of the season. Think of Yates less as "signed to be a closer" and more "signed to be a solid piece of a bullpen with a few solid pieces already."
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2021 Posted March 24, 2021 I wonder if they insured Yates contract?

Did those guys fail their physicals though? Its one thing to come off an injury but another to be physically unfit the moment you sign the contract. I do agree that this stuff must happen more often than we hear about. We can fix this problem by just throwing more money at the situation so let's see how we proceed. It was only a 1 year deal so it's not the biggest problem in the grand scheme of things.

It's not good business for teams to disclose player physicals like in Paxton and Kluber's case. It's entirely possible Paxton failed one of his physicals and this is why he signed back with the Mariners for such a small amount, but no team is going to come out and say that, certainly not the Mariners, while the player is currently healthy. In Yates' scenario maybe someone disclosed/leaked this info knowing that he was going to miss the season anyway as damage control, not that anyone should be outraged that a relatively cheap high risk, high reward signing went into one of the expected buckets.

Exactly. I think it also depends on what you classify as 'passing a physical'. If Tanaka took a physical, it would tell you the ligament in his elbow was slightly torn. Would the team say "well we already knew that" and classify the physical as 'passing'? When they say someone 'failed' a physical, I've always assumed it's that they've concluded some pre-existing condition was simply worse than originally expected and they weren't comfortable with it. It's like a home inspection - there's always something slightly wrong, it's just a matter of how many things are wrong and whether you can live with them or not. I have to imagine most athletes have pre-existing issues. A bad back (Paxton), a bum knee (Pedroia), an ankle that didn't heal the best (J.Polanco), a separated shoulder that pops out more than normal (Bellinger), Arthritis (Flores), etc.
