BTS Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 No problems with Fisher being cut. His value evaporated with his last option year.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 If the mental block is related to his ongoing sucking then i have 0 pity for him but if it's related to something serious then I'll take it back for sure. This is the first I've heard anyone mention a potential serious mental issue so my bad if that's the case. I don't even understand what you're saying. Fisher had a mental block (or some anxiety issue) that made him unable to catch flyballs during games. Did you think someone who's played baseball his entire life suddenly couldn't catch a flyball?

Doing something in the minors is different than the big league level. Did you see Vladdy try to catch pop ups last year? Or how about Collabello when we tried him in the OF in 2015? Unless a player has a proven track record in the bigs of doing something, I attribute the failure to a lack of skill. You can't say anyone who fails to automatically have mental issues unless you have something to back it up. Now instances like Knoblauch or Altuve in the playoffs last year, I could believe there were some issues. Those guys proved they could throw the ball from 2nd at the bigs over an extended time.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Holy f*** - never mind. Glad we agree that Fisher sucked for us. Hopefully he figures it out but doesn't make sense for him to occupy a big league spot to take balls off his head.

Fisher absolutely has the physical tools but where he's lacking is "mental skills" to block out the pressures. The minors are probably littered with physically gifted players but they have mush for brains and Fisher is a prime example along with the other AAAA players.

The MLB only has so many spots and not everyone can make it. Obviously he's talented to get to the point he did but there are thousands of talented players waiting for their chance. I agree that some players don't have the mental makeup to make it but some also don't have the physical tools either, which is different in the bigs vs AAA. You need a combination of both and if he's good enough, he'll find his way back. Edited February 12, 2021 by Jays24
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 I really don’t care why Derek Fisher is a terrible outfielder. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but we just signed George f***ing Springer, have three incumbent outfielders and have no room for a AAAA player with no options who can’t hit either. Maybe he’ll figure it out but I won’t lose a moment of sleep thinking about what could’ve been.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Derek Fisher absolutely deserves a chance to sort out his fielding issues somewhere, I just don't see a fit for a severely limited player like this on a team that has designs of contending.

He has to figure our his defense and his bat! His contact rates are some of the worst in the league. He just isn't very good.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 He sucks Spanky. Move on Davis had an option, it wasn't hard.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 You fellas are wrong. He has shown flashes of potential with the bat. But if he doesn't get past his fielding issues he's limited to a DH only profile, and his bat up to this point isn't nearly good enough for him to provide any value in that capacity.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Do you know Fisher's profile, lol. If Fisher's bat was good enough, he'd get looks at DH or another position on the field. I'm just saying he sucks currently but will never say that he can't improve. Edwin was a disaster at 3B and was out of baseball like 3 times, we all know how that story ended.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Davis had an option, it wasn't hard. Davis also showed he could catch the ball, which is kind of important for an OFer lol. He also has use as a pinch runner so if both players were out of options, Davis still has a chance beating Fisher out.
Ray Verified Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Fisher is out of options, Davis isn't. Even if you think Fisher is a bit better the option makes it a no-brainer. Yeah, I mean I get why it had to be done from a roster management perspective. I just objectively prefer Fisher over Davis in a vacuum.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 f*** derek fisher What he do to you? Lol

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Yeah, I mean I get why it had to be done from a roster management perspective. I just objectively prefer Fisher over Davis in a vacuum. I think you can justify that. Fisher has patience, power, and speed so in theory his ceiling is higher. Davis is of course a better defender and possibly better at making contact. David probably makes better use of his speed too. They might be close all things considered but Fisher's tool package is less common.

This is the first I've heard anyone mention a potential serious mental issue so my bad if that's the case. There's no medical mental issues with Fisher. People love making up s*** so they can show sympathy instead of just stating that he's not a good MLB player and has the yips in the outfield. Options aside, Davis' defence alone carries more value than Fisher. This is a business but some people would prefer to waste a 25 man spot for sympathetic / feel good reasons. f*** that, we gave him enough burn.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Fisher has some intriguing offensive tools, but the only way he will have any value as a player with no options left is on a team willing to give him PA's to see if his bat can take the next step. That's on a rebuilding team, not a team looking to contend. From the Jays perspective, they couldn't send him down, he was a 5th OF at best on the current roster, and he doesn't provide plus defensive value. Davis makes way more sense for this team, both because of options, and because his skillset fits the 5th OF role a lot better.

He took a fly ball off the face and was never the same. Also, can we please not compare this to playing Chris Colabello out of position in the OF? If you want to call him mentally weak and unable to handle the stress of playing in the ML's, then I guess, but I wouldn't.
