Velo was up, Ks were up, BBs were down. Whats not to like? Other than the bloated era from pitching for the phillies he should be a decent middle relief pitcher.

that his name isn't Trevor Rosenthal?

Phelps, 34, posted a 6.53 ERA last season, split between Brewers and Phillies.

Underlying numbers — 36.5 K%, 5.9 BB%, 47.9 GB% — are a bit more encouraging.

Second go-round with #BlueJays after he got them Thomas Hatch in deal with Cubs at ’19 deadline.

I wonder who's being removed for the 40.

Has Payamps even been added to the 40-man? With Phelps already being reported to have passed his physical I think he'll be taking Yamguchi's spot. We'll probably DFA Payamps, try to get him to pass waivers and lose him to some other team that will do the same.

Yeah, Payamps is on the 40. I'm pretty sure every waiver claim is an automatic add to the 40-man.

But yeah he'll never end up playing a game for the Jays

Never say never. Things could go horribly wrong and out of necessity he gets in there.

I mean more likely Payamps ends up being designated again and goes elsewhere before the season even starts

Really like this deal. He was tearing it up in Milwaukee before the curse of the Phillies bullpen got to him. In general, he's been pretty good since moving to the bullpen.

Love the way this staff is currently constructed. Any of Dolis, Romano, Phelps, Yates, Borucki, Chatwood underperform or go down to injury, we have a major league ready stable of arms waiting in AAA. Same with the rotation.

Ah. Ya...that's very possible.

OFFICIAL: We've signed RHP David Phelps to a 1-year contract. Phelps owns a 3.95 career ERA.

To make room, OF Derek Fisher has been designated for assignment.

I don't like dropping Fisher while keeping Wag's.

I would’ve kept Fisher over Davis, but it is what it is.

He’ll land with another team like the Indians or Pirates and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him putting it together.

Colour me surprised.

Hard for me to care for a guy who can't make catches that I would make. He should try his luck in the infield to avoid fly balls lol.

The career .286 wOBA and 78 wRC+ over 4 years of part time play don't exactly compensdate for the fielding issues either...

I'm not sure if it's confirmed, but there's like a 98% chance he was dealing with a mental block. But let's make fun of him right?

He has such loud tools and a LH outfielder was something this team could use. There's probably a 90% chance he never develops into a solid player, but his upside is much higher than most of our fringe roster guys.

Fisher is out of options, Davis isn't. Even if you think Fisher is a bit better the option makes it a no-brainer.

Unless we add another OFer or someone like Marwin who can play all over - wouldn't we just have started the year with Grichuk as the 4th OF/DH (platoon with Tellez) and Fisher on the bench (optioning Davis to AAA)? Or do you think they'll just keep Grichuk as the only backup OFer, recognizing Biggio can play there too? Use the extra roster spot for more relievers?

Regardless - for me - I would have DFA'd Wag's or the new guy they just signed when Shun was cut. I would have kept Fisher through Spring Training as protection against an injury to any of our top 4 OFers - while giving Fisher a chance to prove he's over the yips.

That said, all of this probably doesn't matter. If we had a major injury in Spring Training, we can go sign Puig or one of the other solid OFers still looking for a job.

If the mental block is related to his ongoing sucking then i have 0 pity for him but if it's related to something serious then I'll take it back for sure. This is the first I've heard anyone mention a potential serious mental issue so my bad if that's the case.
