Not liking how the MLB is connecting the Universal DH to expanded playoffs.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 I would like both to become a thing, but more than anything I want someone to reject the asinine extra innings rule. I hate gimmicks so much.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Hot take: I found the extra innings rule to be entertaining, despite the gimmick. It made extra innings really exciting. However, it should go into effect at least into the 12th inning or above.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Scalding hot take: I liked the extra innings rule, and I liked that it started in the 10th. Agreed. Not a fan of long extra inning games. It shouldn’t be a rule in the playoffs but in the regular season I have no issues with it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Hate that everything has become transactional. So much for "the good of the game".

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 The players don’t like the idea of introducing automated strike zones in Spring Training imo
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 The players don’t like the idea of introducing automated strike zones in Spring Training imo Why would the players care about that? It's the umpire's union that would be dead set against it.

It's the umpire's union that would be dead set against it. Not why the players would be against it when they're the ones who argue and get upset at Umpires all the time. Everyone but the MLB umpire association should be for it.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 From MLBTR: MLB offered up a universal DH and a willingness to rule in favor of two players on a pair of service time grievances, per Rosenthal, but in exchange they sought an agreement on expanded playoffs, the implementation of a pitch clock and a Spring Training trial run with electronic strike zones, among other elements. I don't know if the players disagree with any of those things as much as they want more in return for them.

However, it should go into effect at least into the 12th inning or above. A hugely outsized proportion of the best games in MLB history were extra inning affairs. As a baseball fan, it really hurts to think that we may never see one again. Game 6 of the 1992 World Series is one of the best moments in this franchise's history. It wouldn't happen today. The same goes for the Marlins in 1997 and probably many other franchises. Using a gimmick for the sake of TV ratings would result in an incalculable loss for fans of the game.

Both of those events would still have happened since the extra innings rule isn't active in the playoffs. It's the 16+ inning regular season games that basically ruin teams' pitching staffs for weeks to come that are an issue, and it's not like the vast majority of fans are watching past the 12th inning or so. Those can be memorable for the few that watch them but they definitely aren't falling under the "best games in MLB history" since most teams give up around the 13th inning and start throwing out junk pitchers to eat up innings that they'll be demoting the next day and you might never see again (remember Chad Jenkins?).
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 The players reject the expanded playoffs that will make players to make more money because owners will make even more money than them with expanded playoffs. It's ridiculous. The owners will use that money in free agency to spend more. With more playoff teams, more teams will be willing to spend bigger dollars in the off season. The players union is the greediest union in all of sports. They're ridiculous.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Why would the players care about that? It's the umpire's union that would be dead set against it. It's a threat to their livelihood, both pitchers and batters alike. If you are making millions of dollars a year, the status quo suits you just fine.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Why would the players care about that? It's the umpire's union that would be dead set against it. The catchers' union might have a complaint about it, idk.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 The owners benefit more from this plan than the players do. Players don't care that much for universal DH anymore I don't think. It doesn't add an extra roster spot and that position doesn't get paid like it used to.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Scalding hot take: I liked the extra innings rule, and I liked that it started in the 10th. I really like that rule too. Nothing worse than a 16 inning game that is (probably) boring to watch and also decimates your bullpen.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 Is there any word on 7-inning double headers? I think it's a good rule to keep while the pandemic is still occurring. Makes it easier to make up games.

There's more than 100 national league pitchers that want a universal DH. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/12769662/max-scherzer-injured-batting-advocates-designated-hitter-rule-national-league

Dude we have gone through this before. No one gives a f*** if baseball fans enjoy the long games. TV loses money, players get hurt, owners lose money. Union has no real need for this as a bargaining chip. It's going to happen and the game is better for it.

It's pretty sad that nobody gives a f*** what the fans think. I can't imagine MLB would every implement the gimmick in playoff games... Personally, I enjoy the added drama of an extra inning game - even in the regular season. I think it typically wears off by the start of the 12th inning (unless both teams have scored runs or there are lots of action). I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

After a eventless 10th and 11th inning say, they all want it to end whether they’re there at the stadium or watching at home waiting to go to bed. As others have said, I don’t think it should ever be a rule for the playoffs
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I think all of this is true. Personally, I can live with most of the potential changes but I don’t really like any of them. One thing I absolutely don’t want to see is playoff expansion. Good teams should make the postseason. Not average or crappy ones. I think the 2012-2019 playoff format worked well. Not that Manfred or the owners or anyone else cares about what a random hardcore fan thinks. Yeah, I mean it’s a tough thing- playoffs. As a person I’m very much against the “everyone gets a trophy” culture but I mean look at what it does for a team like Toronto and their fan base. Gets people engaged that otherwise wouldn’t be. Baseball is kinda dying out compared to other sports as has been discussed here. Not really disagreeing with you but that’s just the other side of it
