Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Broken mentally, perhaps. Needs to talk with Romano about the mental side. That would be fun
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Pearson has the yips. It's nerves, all mental. As soon as he starts missing the zone it snowballs. He'll get it sorted out. Same thing happened last year and once he got comfortable he torched the Rays in the playoffs like they were a team full of AAAA scrubs.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Broken mentally, perhaps. Consensus is it's mental and not physical? Hopefully Pete Walker can work some magic. Remind him that his stuff is good enough to get major leaguers out and he can attack them and throw strikes...

Rind him that his stuff is good enough to get major leaguers out and he can throw strikes... He reverted back to what he was doing last year when he came up. Tried to guide the ball to the corners and then it all unraveled. Was scared to throw over the plate (not sure he even did).
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Ya when you're talking to yourself on the mound as much as he was, seems like it's strictly mental. He'll be going up against the Phillies next game assuming he stays here, which he should.

No idea how long hes been working on those changes, but he could be in a spot where he's still trying to consistently integrate those changes.

Yes, the whipping delivery, opposed to the violent delivery as he said... paraphrasing obviously.
BCZ Verified Member Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 Pearson looks unimpressive and I'm not talking about his command and control issues. He can throw hard but his stuff looks flat to me. I'm more impressed watching a guy like Matz, even when he's struggling, you can see the good stuff. Does the yips also include having lousy stuff? Roasters do your thing!

Roasters do your thing! What are you basing this on? His appearance yesterday? He looked like s*** yesterday, I wouldn't base anything off of that, it wasn't even 3 innings. His "stuff" is absolutely incredible otherwise. Did you not see him last year against the Rays in the playoffs? His "stuff" was un-f***ing-hittable. The Rays had a World Series caliber line up and they literally couldn't touch his "stuff".
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 Here, just so people don't forget how awesome Nate's "stuff" is because they literally haven't seen him pitch in 7 months and then watched him with the yips yesterday. How do you imbed youtube on here?

Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 So..... Pearson is just broken I guess??? I don't think so. I keep running him out there every ~ 5 days until he can figure it out, and the game slows down for him. Or he gets hurt. Probably the latter.

Traded_prospect Verified Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 (edited) I have to give the Jays and Montoya credit. They have played way more away games (22) than home games (11). Only Pittsburgh (12 v 21); Arizona (11 v 23) and the LA Dodgers (13 v 22) have played similarly unbalanced schedules. So, if you do get home-field advantage, the Jays are due for a nice uptick in wins once they start playing more home games. Edited May 11, 2021 by Traded_prospect

He's played in 35 games over 4 seasons in the minors and started all 35 of them, so he brings that stuff and command as a starter constantly. He's just got MLB jitters. It happens. He'll get over it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Been saying for a while now, Pearson should be used as a bulk reliever to ease him into the MLB grind. It's not a demotion, many great pitchers started out from the bullpen.
Iggy Verified Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Just curious, Does anyone know the rules relating to Tanner Roark's salary if Atlanta calls him up to the major league team? Would Roark receive a salary from both Toronto + Atlanta or does his salary from Atlanta reduce what Toronto has to pay him? I realize his Atlanta salary will probably be very low

I realize his Atlanta salary will probably be very low They would pay only a pro rated league minimum Jays pay the rest. So they would save less than 500k unfortunately.

I'd be fine with that, but the opener has to be a good arm, who would they assign as one, right now it'd have to be Borucki or Chatwood, we have so many injuries at the moment. Geez...

How do you imbed youtube on here? He has a nice "rising" fastball when he's on. His curveball looks slightly above average. Still other than the ability to throw hard color me unimpressed considering he's our top prospect.

He'll get over it. 35 starts over 4 seasons. And these past two seasons in which he has tried to maintain a starter's workload he's run into nagging groin problems. Now he's trying to re-work his delivery to get past these issues. There are some very real risks here and I think it's too convenient to attribute them to jitters. Hopefully he's able to settle right into the rotation beginning with his next start. But we'll have to see.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Pearson has been optioned to AAA, and Jeremy Beasley (who?) is coming up.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Good Pearson isnt even close. That was a Kyle Drabek esque outing
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 I think there is a 'vulture' role, where a guy like Pearson could get 40 games, 120-140 innings, 3-5 innings per game, win 10 and save 10 that would be really valuable. Just to need to figure out how to do it. Something like how relievers were used 40 years ago, but not quite. Limit back to back days, a few less games then a typical reliever, a little longer each game.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 So who gets the next shot, Pearson or Manoah?
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Who would have thought the starting pitching would be an issue for us...

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 So who gets the next shot, Pearson or Manoah? Probably Pearson in a couple weeks. Manoah i’d guess maybe by July or after the trade deadline.
