L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 With the flexibility the Jays already have with their lineup, the idea of having Martin and Groshans just waiting to plug in is exciting.

I can envision a scenario where we let Semien go for a comp pick, plug in one of those guys, and add a big free agent pitcher without even adding much payroll.

Yeah that’s what so exciting about the current Jays. Spending in free agency on potentially high impact talent but not touching the prospect base. Much better chance to build a sustainable winner that way.

We only have Ryu, Springer, Grichuk and Gurriel on actual contracts for next season, which is about 62 million. Think about the amount of money we'll have to toss around. It could be around 70 to 80 million... Edited February 1, 2021 by Jays24
keggy Verified Member Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 He's in there as the backup catcher. Writer refers to Jansen's superior framing. I'm not sure 25 PA by Kirk in 2020 is enough to anoint him the starting catcher. If there's a minor league season let Kirk play there every day while we see if Jansen can can start hitting. If Kirk looks like the real deal he'll be called up for the stretch run regardless. We're fine with the masturbator as the backup C for now.

I believe McGuire is out of options so he'll be given one last chance to be the backup. If he still sucks and Kirk is tearing things up, then the obvious move is to waive Reese and call up Kirk.

All of the FA aces are on the older side though... Except for Noah Syndergaard if he comes back healthy.

Not many appealing options for pitchers next year. I’d rather them sign Bauer this year, because it takes advantage of the cheap production by Bo, Vlad and Biggio, and he is better than any of the options next year. I wouldn’t touch next years free agents outside of Seaver and perhaps Correa. Syndergaard may be nice as well but I’d be concerned about his health on a long term deal.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 Story's home/away splits are kind of gross. So is every Coors guy's. It's so hard to measure the Coors effect on a player who's never played away from there before. We never saw if someone like Todd Helton could get it done elsewhere. Dexter Fowler did well post Coors. Tulo was already broken, CarGo was already washed. Matt Holliday did great. Someone like Chris Iannetta continued being the same guy. I think there's good reason to believe Story is a legitimately excellent player and very capable hitter.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Story's home/away splits are kind of gross. so take whatever discount is there for those splits and know that once he gets away from the Rockies, his bat will be better on the road.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 The Lindor dream isnt dead yet Lets cheer for a typical "Mets" season where it all goes wrong in many ways and he wants no part of staying Except then I'm worried the Yankees might get him

Next off season could potentially include: Greinke Scherzer Kershaw Verlander Lynn Cueto Kluber Lester Lots of huge names but all will be north of 35 except Kershaw who will be 34. (somehow I thought Kershaw was older than rhat hmmm guess not) How many more good years you gonna get? McCullers Jr available at age 28 Edited February 2, 2021 by G-Snarls

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 If they're planning to sign an ace in free agency next year they might as well get Bauer this year instead honestly... Ya this seems like the cheapest chance for us to get one. A 3/4 deal at 30+ seems like his value but I think our front office wants flexibility to spend next offseason. Let's see...
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/2022/starting-pitcher/ Outside of the older guys, what ace can you buy in FA 2022? Might as well sign Bauer as you said 2023 at least has Clevinger, Berrios, Manaea, Taillon And this is assuming that those guys don't sign extensions by then. Hoping for future free agencies should never be the way to go. Ask the Raptors and how their 2021 plans went with Giannis and others...
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I'll gladly take an old Ace on a short deal in a compete year, lol. Some of those geezers are awesome. 2/$66 for Scherzer please and thanks.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I don't really know what Salvant Hitting Metrics are - but I like that they said Tellez's were great, if not elite last year. How amazing would it be if Tellez's results from 2020 were sustainable? Baseball Savant's MLB Statcast.

I'm not completely sold on Bundy, but he's a guy to watch. Maybe he turned a corner. If he has another good season he will be very he's going to have some intrigue. McCullers and Syndergaard obviously have appeal. There are quite a few optioins....I'm worried about extensions and how many might actually hit the market though.

Yeah It's hard to picture the Nats and Dodgers not holding on to Scherzer and Kershaw
Ray Verified Member Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Yeah It's hard to picture the Nats and Dodgers not holding on to Scherzer and Kershaw It kind of depends on where the Nats are at that point. This season will tell a lot about their future. Soto is a god and Turner is fantastic, but everyone else in that lineup is just meh. Pitching depth falls off dramatically after Scherzer/Strasburg/Corbin. It’s kind of a stars and scrubs team with an absolutely barren farm system. I could see Scherzer wanting to end off his career on a competitive team and chase another championship.
