The Jays have been incredibly aggressive, and have more to do. They did not come close to signing Michael Brantley.

I was super excited about them getting Brantley but is it the worst thing in the world if they don't? I was rosterbating a bit earlier and trying to build a lineup and realized either Lourdes or Teoscar wouldn't fit if they got Brantley, and those are the top two wRC+'s on the team from last season. Unless you're getting legitimate value back on the pitching side, losing one of those guys to replace them with Brantley seems like a lateral move at best.

Obviously it looks a lot better if you get Brantley and don't somehow give up either Lourdes or Teoscar, but then you're probably running Teoscar at DH, where he loses value and still displaces someone like Kirk or Tellez, who could both also be solid bats.

Only in Toronto can the media dull a George Springer signing.

Yes...Springer is still amazing....but we were convinced that we added another very good bat...giving us a surplus in the OF, that we would leverage into a starter....now we have to back it up...no additional bat...and no obvious plan to get a starter.

"Jays signing Brantley to a 3 year deal".

Hours later...

"Jays did not come close to signing Brantley".

Interested to know what the hell actually happened here.

Hazel should name her "source"

Can't say I'm terribly disappointed by this news. Starting pitching and infield help are far more pressing needs than adding another DH to the roster.

At this point we have more flexibility to make a run at Bauer. We're sitting at around 117M now with the performance bonuses in for Chatwood/Yates.

2016 ended with a payroll of 153M I believe. Not sure if we have the green light to go back to that or beyond, but, if so, that's another 36M left to spend if they do so choose.

Could potentially grab Bauer with that and call it an off-season.

Someone's "source" went rogue or were intentionally feeding misleading information. Safe to say they won't be a source for much longer.

lol @ Hazel Mae

There were too many high profile people tweeting about it for all of it to have come from one source imo. It'll be very interesting to find out exactly what happened. It feels to me like a verbal agreement may have happened, but something changed before it was signed.

In my headcanon, the Blue Jays are now working on several major moves at once and the fake Brantley signing leak was a preemptive Ned Stark play by Shatkins to figure out who's leaking information.

Now that the mole has been discovered and executed, they can continue on with their Godfather plans to dominate the baseball market under the shadows.

Agreed, Brantley was more of a luxury signing, not a necessity. Would have been awesome to have him in the lineup, but he wasn't filling a need.

Probably an offer was made to him, got misreported as a deal while he went back to the Stros and asked them to pony up.

Steve Phillips is on Overdrive right now. He thinks the Jays are just getting started. Don't count them out on Realmuto, Bauer, Turner, potential trades. He thinks there is more to come.

Turner wouldn't 100% shock me, there's no way those other 2 are signing here.

I can't see Rogers spending that much after Springer

I love Brantley, but can't say I really care that he's not signing in Toronto. I think it's hilarious all these "insiders" got exposed though.

Selective leaking to find the mole.

Brantley at 2/32 would have been decent value, but if we had to add a third year then I'm not upset. It's a lot to offer when a guy at a position where we don't need help. We can always pivot to another DH type if they find a nice trade for one of our outfielders or Tellez.

If we were in on Brantley, would should be in on Nelly Cruz too.

What? Brantley isn't a pure DH, he's rated as above average by DRS and UZR the past two seasons. Signing Cruz gives us zero flexibility in shuffling Teoscar, Vladdy, Tellez, and any players with nagging injuries through DH.
