MLB, MLBPA Agree To Move Tender Deadline Up To November 30

By Anthony Franco | November 23, 2021 at 8:57pm CDT

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have agreed to move this year’s deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players up from December 2 to November 30 at 8:00 pm EST, according to reports from Robert Murray of FanSided and Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter links).

The decision moves the tender deadline before the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement, which is scheduled to happen at 11:59 pm EST on December 1. If a new agreement is not reached within the next eight days, it’s generally expected that the league would institute a lockout and subsequent transactions freeze. The MLBPA recently put together a 36-page document outlining the potential parameters of a lockout for players and their representatives, according to a report from Evan Drellich and Rosenthal.

Leaving the tender deadline on December 2 would’ve left arbitration-eligible players in a state of limbo over the course of a potential transactions freeze. Many could’ve been left with uncertainty about whether their current clubs intended to bring them back next season while awaiting a bargaining process that could take weeks or months to resolve.

Against that backdrop, the final few hours of the current CBA could present a hectic time for teams eager to finalize moves before the potential transactions freeze. Certain players, meanwhile, might feel pressure to sign contracts for 2022 rather than risk having to linger in free agency over the course of a lockout and face a potential rushed free agent period were CBA negotiations to linger near or into next year’s Spring Training. By forcing teams to make the final call on their arbitration-eligible players early, some non-tendered options could look to catch on with a new club on December 1 and avoid that uncertainty altogether.

Tells me they 100% are expecting a lockout. Awesome.

Please don’t f*** the 2022 season

Nothing to say Tampa can’t. The problem is the Team is in St Pete in a s***** stadium.

No, the problem is that the team is in Florida

No, the problem is that the team is in Florida

That's not accurate. How is it that a hockey team in FLORIDA in Tampa is top 5-6 in NHL attendance... Hockey... in Florida. The TV ratings for the Rays are pretty good and the minor league teams in Florida get good attendance.

The issue with both Teams in Florida, but more so Tampa, is location, location, location.

There is one narrow bottle necked way to get to St Pete from the Greater Tampa/Orlando area. It sucks as far as traffic goes, getting there for game after work, parking and leaving after the game. There is no public transport. no Metro rail, no subway or commuter trains or busses.

The Marlins are more complicated, but basically at the crux of the issue is the same reason that Montreal lost it's Team in the first place. Same guy responsible as well...Fans of the Marlins are scorned and there are other issues, but years of selling off their stars and being a middling team has not helped.

That's their reality. And their reality doesn't belong in MLB.

NHL stadiums are like 1/3 the size of MLB stadiums. Minor league stadiums are like 1/10th the size of MLB stadiums.

While true, the issue with The Rays is 100% location and dump stadium. Getting in and out of St. Pete is a nightmare. The Lightning's location is about 10,000 times better since it's right in downtown Tampa.

The issue is as long as the Rays exist in their current form, it's going to be in St. Pete with the Trop as their stadium. It doesn't appear a better stadium in a better location is in the cards. So there's really no justification to keep them where they are. A perennial 90+ win team in a market that has more baseball fans would make a killing. The Rays were giving away tickets in September just to get 10k in the stands. I'm not sure if Montreal is the answer, but at this point anything would be better than the current Rays.

There are plenty of fans, they just don't want to put up with the ******** getting the stadium. I drove there in spring 2020 and it was a nightmare from the 7th circle of hell that I couldn't fathom doing more than once or twice a year.

Stadium location makes a huge difference. I live in Ottawa, and I’d see a lot more games if I didn’t have to treck out to Kanata to watch a game. And that commute is apparently nothing compared to the one between TB and St. Pete.

The post was in response to the comment the reason for the Rays attendance issues is - Florida.

The point is, there IS a market for baseball in the greater Tampa area if right location and product. There are multiple metrics to support that.

How is it that in that area, there is a large fan base for hockey, the 6th wheel of sports in Florida. It is because it is a good sports market. The issue is not the market.

Nashville. Might need to do some geographical realignment within divisions though if that happens, or maybe not....

It would be virtually impossible for them to have a better product, and they're simply unable to draw. Also, the Marlins can't draw for s*** either, they're consistently at the bottom of the NL attendance rankings, so it's not JUST St. Pete.

The Marlins have been run into the ground through decades of mismanagement.

Obviously you didn’t read, or are not understanding my original post where I addressed both the Rays and the Marlins in the context of Florida.

Of course, I am only a lifelong baseball fan and Florida resident… So maybe I have no idea about the situation..

I won't disagree with that, but we have a sample size of two Florida MLB teams, neither of which can draw fans. That's literally the only data we have. I mean, even the year the Marlins won the WS, they were second last in attendance in the NL.

How is attendance for the really good NHL team in Tampa?

Currently 100% sold out over 19000 per game. 2nd highest avg attendance in the league behind only Montreal

You will note that baseball and hockey aren't the same sport. I thought the skates were a dead giveaway... ;)

Actually curious though about Lighting and Buccaneers locations and attendance

Bucs stadium is just slightly outside what is known as downtown, and they are 93% full so far this season. But then, nobody in the NFL has in person attendance problems except the Redskins.

True

And they're both also reining champs which helps

The argument I always heard about Florida baseball attendance sucking is that the sport occurs during the summer when Floridians are doing anything other than watching sports. NFL, college sports is fall time and NHL/NBA is winter.

What's with all the Rays to Montreal chatter? Is that just a board meme now or has something come up recently to make this more realistic?

The half/half plan was basically official at one point

Posted
I think the half/half plan isn’t a bad idea. Basically they don’t want to build a billion+ retractable roof stadium that’s needed for that part of Florida for the late summer months. So they build a 30k stadium outdoor near the Tampa city limits (Ybor area maybe). Think they’d pack the stadium even if it’s a half-Tampa team. Playoffs would be in Tampa

I think this is legit a major reason for this. Not the only one, obviously, but Florida is f***ing HOT in July, dome or no.

I believe the plan (from the Rays owner) is that the playoffs would be in Montreal.
