I think I'm picking the White Sox to win it all this year.

 

The Jays have something like a 34-37 record against teams that are .500 or better.

 

The White Sox haven't even played 34 games total against teams that are .500 or better.

 

Good team sure, but most certainly propped up by playing in a weak ass division.

Poor bugger...

 

The news on Axford was to be expected. The Brewers already announced earlier this month that the 38-year-old right-hander sustained a season-ending elbow injury during his first big league appearance since 2018. Unfortunately, Axford indeed sustained an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported this morning, and he’s weighing what the injury means for his career at this point. President of baseball operations David Stearns indicated that Axford is likely looking at a “reconstruction” surgery (i.e. Tommy John).

 

“It’s really unfortunate,” said Stearns. “We feel awful for John. I think he was very excited to come to this team. He was excited to pitch in a pennant race, hopefully pitch in the playoffs again. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out.”

 

Given the timing of the injury, a Tommy John procedure would very likely wipe out all of Axford’s 2022 season as well. If he did attempt a comeback, he’d be doing so in 2023 for what would be his age-40 season.

How did you guys feel about the opening of the Field of Dreams game? Costner gave a good speech, if not for him I'd just think the whole thing was cheesy.

Are you f***ing kidding me? It was incredible. MLB hit another home run. I got emotional watching them come through the corn and to listen to Costner (everyone's favourite baseball actor). It made me feel like a kid again. All the kids on my U11 team were talking about it last night, guessing who would win and recalling how much they loved the movie.

 

And then an incredible game - back and forth, ending on a walk off home run in the absolutely perfect setting. How can you not be romantic about baseball? Maybe you have to be a true baseball fan to have enjoyed it.

 

You also missed a great opportunity to call it 'corny' instead of cheesy. Dumbass.

Giants Release Aaron Sanchez

The Giants announced this evening that they’ve placed right-hander Aaron Sanchez on unconditional release waivers. That was the expected outcome after the club designated him for assignment last weekend.

 

San Francisco added Sanchez on a one-year, $4MM guarantee over the offseason. It was a low-risk shot on a reclamation candidate. Sanchez showed plenty of promise early in his career with the Blue Jays but he’d been beset by injuries over the past few years and missed all of last season recovering from September 2019 shoulder surgery.

 

While the addition didn’t pan out as hoped, it wasn’t a complete bust. Sanchez worked to a 3.06 ERA over 35 1/3 innings across nine appearances (seven starts). His 16.7% strikeout rate and 9.6% walk percentage weren’t especially impressive, but he induced grounders at a strong 52.3% clip. That’s not quite the elite groundball numbers Sanchez boasted at his peak, but it was his best season in that regard since 2016.

 

Unfortunately, Sanchez’s troubles staying healthy reappeared in early May. The 29-year-old landed on the injured list with right biceps tightness. Between that and blister issues that cropped up on his minor league rehab assignment, Sanchez missed nearly three months. He returned to make two appearances before being let go.

 

Sanchez is entitled to the entirety of his $4MM salary, about $1.1MM of which remains to be paid out. Any team that claims Sanchez off waivers would assume the remainder of that salary, but it seems more likely he’ll pass through unclaimed and reach free agency. At that point, rival clubs could sign Sanchez for the prorated portion of the league minimum salary, with the rest of the tab falling on the Giants.

Talk about blowing a gasket. Did you read the part where I was only talking about the opening because that's all I saw (the ~9 minute clip on MLB). Glad you liked it though. Keep being you man! Also the reason I kind of think it's cheesy is because they're trying to replicate the movie in real life... personally I just like the move the way it is...the theme park version doesn't really appeal as much to me but I understand a lot of kids like Disneyland.

It also did the best ratings in 15-20 years for a regular season baseball game. MLB killed it with this game. Marketing, execution, everything.
