If the Jays want to maintain flexibility to get in on next year's FA market, then Price even at half his salary ($16m) doesn't make sense in 2022 (it's fine in 2021). The Dodgers don't need him, and I'm sure they'd love to have $16m freed up in 2022 when they need to re-sign Seager.

Sure it would, I can't see your point here? Our roster next season loses a lot of dough, and I'm sure Price and his price wouldn't cripple the Birds, like at all.

The Jays have 65 million committed next year and probably about 10 mil in arb raises. Price's 16 mil would bring us to around 90 mil. There would still be plenty of payroll flexibility next year.

We'll likely get into this talk more as spring training gets rolling, but I feel like the Jays are pretty much destined to start the season with a 6 man rotation. We're stacking our bullpen with swing guys.

 

Ryu has had injury issues and even last year we saw him take an extra day rest at least once. He actually prefers pitching on an extra day of rest. All arms are going to have to be protected after a short season, but especially a guy like Pearson. You're going to want to limit his innings. If we sign Paxton, he screams 6 man rotation. I guess time will tell.

I agree. Even without bringing in another starter (which I'm pretty sure they will) they have enough arms to roll out a 6 man rotation.

11. Thornton (Not sure when he's slated to return)

12. Zeuch (Starts in AAA)

13. Waguespack (Starts in AAA)

Tons of depth, and lots of wild card type arms, and it's probably a good idea to spread the innings around given the light work load for everyone in 2020.

 

If/when they bring in another starter (come on Paxton!) they can push Stripling or Roark to the pen to eat innings from there.

If there's an off day you skip the next start for the 6th guy and you use him in relief that game or the day before instead

 

Everyone gets 1 more day of rest before every start, your SP6 does't get so rusty but he still gets fewer innings overall.

 

This had always made sense to me for a team lacking major SP punch.

Yes please. A switch hitting bat that can play 3B is a nice fit for us.

Marwin Gonzalez would be the perfect bench infielder to give us some depth at a number of positions.

I'd be surprised if he couldn't find a role that would guarantee him more playing time though. Unless we're still trying to make a move for one of Teo/Gurriel/Biggio for a pitcher (Hendricks).

I think you’re vastly overestimating how much value Teoscar Hernandez has. He’s not returning German Marquez with “a bit more”, not to mention the Rockies are dumb and still think they can compete so they’re not going to trade him.

 

Marwin Gonzalez is literally just replacing Santiago Espinal on the depth chart. We’re a middle infield injury away from seeing Espinal get relatively significant reps. Can probably easily upgrade there.

Ya I'm with you here. Our starting rotation is already a pile of turd mostly. Why wouldn't we want to trade from a position of strength to fill a weakness? Obviously we'd all prefer signing a free agent to avoid having to give up anything but if that fails then I'm on board with a move similar to this.

At what cost though? He made 12 mil and 9 mil the last 2 seasons. Does Marwin get 3 to 5 mil? I'd rather go cheap. Marwin's a better bat, but Espinal is probably a better base runner and defender. We need all our money to go into pitching at this point, not the bench. Go sign Paxton already!

I would say the ask on Marquez would be really high, but it's the Rockies, so who knows. I'd definitely check in on Marquez, Price, Castillo and Gray. We need to sort our starting pitching whether that's signing Paxton, Odorizzi, Walker or trading for a starter.

He had a better wRC+ on the road in 2017 (150). I think he was just locked in that year. I doubt the trash can had a large effect on the final regular season numbers of the Astros.
