Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 How do you have that list available and pick the cohort of players that's both older, more injury prone, and projects for less combined WAR than 2 of Springer, Bauer, Realmuto and DJLM? Paying Bauer what he's going to get scares me, and I'm not convinced he's a true ace. Catchers get beat up over the season, so I'd rather not spend huge amounts on them. Turner is a bigger upgrade for us than anyone else on the list, and it's not a painful commitment. If 3rd is filled, we don't need DJLM. I like Springer, and would love to have him, but I think the money can be better utilized spread out. None are long-term commitments, so they don't affect our future flexibility.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Springer, Sugano or Paxton plus, plus, plus
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Hendriks 15? Ewwwww... You wouldn't pay the best projected reliever in baseball that??? Will Smith Sr got 3/40 last year...
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Hendriks 15? Ewwwww... Hendriks put up 3.9 wins in 2019 and 1.4 last year in 60 games. He's been the best reliever in baseball the last 2 years. I don't think his AAV will get to 15, but in a non covid year 3 and 45 is pretty fair.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 You wouldn't pay the best projected reliever in baseball that??? Will Smith Sr got 3/40 last year... and he had a draft pick tied to him.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Springer, Sugano or Paxton plus, plus, plus I hope we don't get Sugano.

We all read a ton of stupid rumors and I can't imagine a world in which he gets it, but I think we all assumed he'd be a 1 or 2 year commitment, which may not do it. Turner is a f***ing beauty, but there's a ton of risk in a 3 year deal for him.

Yeah, I would have picked him at 1 or 2 years, but 3 years at $15M AAV is too much for a guy old enough to fall off a cliff, Matt Carpenter style, as soon as this year.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Springer, Hand and Sugano. Also have interest in Garrett Richards

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Last year is apparent. Hendriks is far better, and wouldn't require giving up a draft pick either. I'm not so sure the free agents at the top of the food chain are going to end up seeing massive covid discounts.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 3/30 sold. If I were Hendriks I would fire my agent if I ended up signing for that amount before spring training starts. The guy has found another gear the last two seasons, although given that nobody wanted Brad Hand for free on waivers for only $10 million who even knows what Hendriks ends up receiving for offers.

Yeah if no one would take hand for free for 1 and 10 maybe hendriks tops out at 10 mil a season. Given that Melancon got 4 and 62, 3 and 30 or even 4 and 40 seems pretty reasonable for Hendriks.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Springer Hand Odorizzi from that list but in reality... I want to add Lindor on top of that group lol. Strike while the iron is hot... we won't have the chance to be the head honcho that often. Once MLB returns back to normal next offseason, there will be more competition for talent and higher prices in general for players.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Say you have $50M in AAV you can spend. No going over. Assume these contracts: Bauer 5/150 ($30 AAV) Springer 5/135 ($27 AAV) Realmuto 5/100 ($20 AAV) DJLM 4/80 ($20 AAV) Ozuna 4/76 ($19 AAV) Paxton 3/57 ($19 AAV) Semien 3/54 ($18 AAV) Tanaka 3/51 ($17 AAV) Didi 3/48 ($16 AAV) Hendriks 3/45 ($15 AAV) Turner 3/45 ($15 AAV) Brantley 3/45 ($15 AAV) Simmons 3/39 ($13 AAV) Kluber 1/13 ($13 AAV) Hamels 1/13 ($13 AAV) Sugano 3/36 ($12 AAV) Odorizzi 3/36 ($12 AAV) Pederson 2/20 ($10 AAV) Wong 3/30 ($10 AAV) Walker 2/20 ($10 AAV) Quintana 2/20 ($10 AAV) Happ 2/18 ($9 AAV) Hand 3/27 ($9 AAV) Archer 1/9 ($9 AAV) Cesar Hernandez 2/16 ($8 AAV) Garrett Richards 2/16 ($8 AAV) Treinen 2/16 ($8 AAV) Puig, La Stella, Hill...1/8 ($8 AAV) For anyone else assume the AAV here: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker or just use $5M if there is no prediction there. (you can assume that smaller $1M and $2M additions don't affect payroll) Who are you signing? Two big fish or spreading the money around? Bauer + Realmuto....trade Jansen as part of a package for another piece.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 As much as I would like some of the big names. I think as a TEAM, just the simple addition of Semien and JB jr makes us a better team. The issue is IMO we need a lot more pitching than even a Bauer and don't have high hopes for him.. JPR let's us move Kirk as part of a package and we could probably get Musgrove and Kuhl from the Pirates as a good start.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 ^^^^ And hear we have a video game.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Bauer 5/150 ($30 AAV) Realmuto 5/100 ($20 AAV) Trade Jansen, Hiraldo, Kay, & Adams for Lindor & Carrasco (if it costs most upgrade Hiraldo to Groshans & remove Adams). Not sure if you only meant $50 on FA or total, but going with the former, this is what I would try and do. Would look like this after: 1. Bauer 2. Ryu 3. Carrasco 4. Ray 5. Pearson Depth: Stripling, Roark, Hatch Prospect depth: SWR, Manoah, Murray 1. Biggio 3B 2. Bichette 2B 3. Lindor SS 4. Hernandez RF/DH 5. Tellez DH/1B 6. Guerrero Jr 1B/3B 7. Gurriel Jr LF 8. Realmuto C 9. Grichuk CF Bench: Kirk C, Davis OF, Espinal IF Prospect depth: Martin CF, Groshans 3B*, Moreno C, Martinez SS/3B, Hiraldo IF* * Remove if traded for Lindor It was ugly the first time...

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 It was ugly the first time... Explain how it's ugly... It would essentially take our payroll to 140M or so with Lindor added, and Bauer and Realmuto would be off the books in 5 yrs when it's time to extend the core. Lindor would take a chunk of that for sure, but should still be able to extend part of the core you'd like to extend. We just had a payroll north of 160M only a few years ago, so it's well within our reach, if our FO decides to do it all in this OS.

On a multi year deal, I'll stick with 3/30 No actual good starters have signed yet, only guys who had ugly seasons or don't have enough of a track record to earn a larger contract. We simply don't have enough data to make conclusions as to what the top reliever on the market is going to sign for in comparison. Hendriks has been a 3.5+ win reliever for the last two seasons, the man is going to get paid. I'll make a guess myself and say he'll bring in 12/36.
